Here's how to borrow up to 16 FREE eBooks for your Kids without leaving the house

Compared to life three months ago, we are living in vastly different times these days. In a time where social distancing and being socially responsible are drilled into everyone, it is great that we can all borrow eBooks from Singapore's National Library Board (NLB) without leaving the house!

Yes, in case you didn't know, you can borrow eBooks from the library - and more than 3.5 million titles in 4 languages at that! - and download them into your electronic devices. In fact, the kids will be able to search for the books themselves and borrow them effortlessly!

You can borrow up to 16 eBooks (including eAudiobooks). Each ebook lasts for 21 days and the beauty of the system is the eBook will automatically expire after that so there are no fines to worry about for overdue items! Plus, you don't even have to head down to the library to return the books!

How do you get started on borrowing eBooks from NLB?

Firstly, you need to be a Singapore National Library member AND have a myLibrary ID. If are already a NLB member but do not have the myLibrary ID, you can sign up via online HERE. Or you can download the NLB Mobile App from the App Store or Google Play to register as well.

If you are NOT a NLB member at all, you must first sign up to be one before having a myLibrary ID. Annual membership is free for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents but the latter will be charged a one-time registration fee of $10.50. Singaporeans and PRs can immediately sign up via online (for SingPass users aged 15 and above) while foreigners have to head to the nearest NLB library to sign up.

Next, download the NLB Mobile App onto your electronic devices.

Sign in with your myLibrary ID and password, and you can proceed to browse for book titles and borrow them if they are available.

In addition to borrowing eBooks, eAudiobooks, accesssing eNewspapers, eMagazines and online courses, NLB Mobile also lets you easily check your account and perform transaction like the payment of fines.

Search for the eBooks you want, and proceed to borrow if they are available.

But here's an IMPORTANT point: while NLB Mobile lets you read or listen to eBooks & eAudiobooks while you are connected to the Internet, it does not have an in-built reader for you to read downloaded eBooks.

How do I download eBooks so that I can read them offline?

Download the FREE Libby App from App Store or Google Play.

Libby is a third-party app which allows you to borrow and download NLB's eBooks and eAudiobooks, so that you can enjoy them even when you are offline.

Once you have downloaded the app, you have to set it up for the first time so that you are able to borrow eBooks from NLB. Don't worry, the set-up process is a breeze.

When asked if you have a library card, tap "Yes". Then, let Libby guess your library by tapping "Yes, Guess My Library".

National Library Board will be shown in the next page and tap "This Is My Library".

Enter your library account details (myLibrary ID and password) and you are all set!

You will then be brought to the main page of NLB where you can browse and search for eBooks.

There are loads of titles to browse, with a section dedicated for kids.

You can search for specific titles... for Ale, she wanted 'Dork Diaries'.

Unfortunately, most of the Dork Diaries eBooks' borrowing quotas were full but you can tap "Place Hold" to reserve the eBook. Once the next copy is available, it will appear in your borrowed books list.

For eBooks that are avilable, you can simply tap on "Borrow" and it will automatically be downloaded onto your device so that you can read them offline.

When the download is complete, just open the book to begin reading!

Frankly, it cannot get easier than this and everything is so simple that a child can do it. What I like about the eReader app is there is a scrub timeline for the eBooks so that you can drag the scrub control to shuttle forward or backward to the page that you had previously left off.

To see the eBooks that are currently on loan, just tap on "Shelf".

Empower the kids by allowing them to explore the eBooks listing and choosing which eBooks to borrow on their own. Even if an eBook is mistakenly borrowed, you can just tap on the eBook and return in immediately. No hassle!

More importantly, you don't even have to step out of the house, head down to the library and come into contact with the physical books. Of course, not every hard copy book at the library has an eBook version but I would say the selection is pretty adequate... plus the chances of borrowing a popular eBook is much higher!

And best of all, you can borrow up to 16 eBooks per account and everything's FREE!

Welcome to the world of Stay-At-Home, where the acronyms of WFH (Work-From-Home) and HBL (Home-Based Learning) are more relevant than ever. For the next one month, both parents and children will be confined to the four walls of their homes and let's just say things WILL be extremely challenging. Besides trying to get some real work done, perhaps the most difficult task is to the keep the hyperactive kids occupied!

Because there can only be that many YouTube videos one can watch or video games one can play, there are actually more ways you can keep the kids entertained. And best of all, take the chance NOW that you are at home with them to bond with them over these activities:

KidZania Singapore closes down after 4 years

NEWS JUST IN

KidZania Singapore closes its doors permanently after four years.

In case you are unfamiliar with the KidZania concept, it is not your typical theme park. In fact, this indoor facility comes with NO rides or arcade attractions at all. Instead, kids get to participate in a variety of role-playing activities specifically designed to educate and inspire kids aged 4 to 17, creating a kid-centric city experience from arriving at the airport, to visiting a city centre and exploring the city streets. On top of it all, they get to earn a salary (in the form of kidZos, the official currency of KidZania), pay for goods and services and manage an ATM card - all the things they see adults do in real life.

So this is pretty sad news, considering that my kids had such a great time visiting KidZania Singapore the past 4 years.

Should you be holding onto any unused tickets or annual passes, you are advised to email KidZania Singapore at share@kidzania.com.sg for any queries.

5 Non-crowded Parks to bring the family after Phase 1 in Singapore (ALL FREE!)

$
0
0
After 2 months of Circuit Breaker and 2.5 weeks of Phase 1, we are returning to a little more normalcy in our lives with Phase 2 tomorrow (19 June 2020). And while I understand the pent-up feelings of people yearning to head out to celebrate, please bear in mind we are not out of the woods yet.

It is not time to go shopping at the malls.
It is not time to participate in social gathering after social gathering over the weekend.
It is not time to meet up with huge groups of friends at parks, beaches and playgrounds.

But I'm a parent too. And I also understand the need to bring the kids out for some fresh air and move those limbs after the past few months.

So my suggestion is to bring them to a nature park, where the area is vast and social distancing can be kept to a desirable level. Of course, certain parks are going to be jam-packed with visitors come weekends - I'm looking at you, East Coast Park, Jurong Lake Gardens, Botanic Gardens, Gardens by the Bay and other usual suspects - so it is best to avoid them and head to more remote (or ulu) parks in Singapore.

Like these five below.

But most importantly, wear a mask at all times, stay away from crowds, and stay safe at all times. Amd please, do not head out if you or other family members are not feeling well.

Oh, and remember to check Safe Distance @ NParks (https://safedistparks.nparks.gov.sg/) to see if the park you are headed to is experiencing high visitorship before heading out!

1. Tampines Eco Green

Tampines Eco Green is probably the most underraated park in Singapore because it is unlike any other nature park we had visited. For starters, it is a sprawling 36.5-hectare ecological park resembling a savannah with marshlands, secondary forests and freshwater ponds. Not only that, the park was designed with minimal intrusion, leaving most of the land untouched and in its original state. In fact, the park is NOT lit at night - so go before 7pm! - so as to minimize disturbance to its wildlife inhabitants.

But if you are looking for playground structures to keep the kiddos occupied, there are NONE here. What is present in the park is plenty of flora and fauna to keep the little ones fascinated. And the main difference here compared to other nature parks is the footpath is carpeted with Manila Grass rather than concrete or gravel, making it a unique walking experience.

The park offers three trails weaving through the forest: Diversity Trail, Forest Trail and Marsh Trail. In total, one loop of the park covers 3km, with a walking time of between 1.5 to 2 hours. The terrain is flat throughout, making it extremely easy for kids. Read more about our experience HERE.

Address: Tampines Avenue 9 and Tampines Avenue 12
How to get there:
Alight at Tampines MRT station and walk 20 mins to the park via Sun Plaza Park.
If you drive, the nearest parking is at Block 408, Tampines Ave 9
NOTE: No lights after dark

2. Kranji Marshes

Spanning 56.8 hectares (half the size of Gardens by the Bay), Kranji Marshes is the largest freshwater marshland in Singapore. It is home to a combination of lush, marsh, woodland and grass habitats with more than 170 species of birds, 54 species of butterflies and 33 species of dragonflies lies in the north-western part of Singapore. And not only is it open to everyone, it is FREE to visit!

There are two main areas – one that is open to public and the core conservation area which can only be accessed via guided walks. For the public walk, the start journey begins at Kranji Gate which is located at the end of Neo Tiew Lane 2 (beside D'Kranji Farm Resort).

The walk is a relatively straight-forward linear one, a 1km route which ends at 10-metre tall Raptor Tower which offers a panoramic view of the entire Kranji Marshes. Suffice to say, scaling the tower is the highlight for the kids!

To complete an educational day out, be sure to head to the nearby Marsh Station where they can learn more about the birds and their respective bills and feet.

Address: 11 Neo Tiew Lane 2, Singapore 718814
Opening hours: 7am to 7pm daily

3. Thomson Nature Park

Even though there isn't a playground for kids, Thomson Nature Park is home to the ruins of an old Hainanese village that was there from the 1930s which offers adults and kids a glimpse into life in a Singapore kampung back in the 1960s.

Located to the east of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (CCNR), between Old Upper Thomson Road and Upper Thomson Road, Thomson Nature Park complements existing nature parks including Springleaf and Windsor Nature Parks to extend the green buffer for the CCNR. This 50-hectare buffer park is unique for its rich cultural heritage as the site of a former Hainan Village as well as housing a rich array of biodiversity and is notably a key conservation site for the critically endangered Raffles’ Banded Langur.

There are a total of five walking trails spanning 3.8 km around the former village's road network - Ruins & Fig Trail (1.5km), Stream & Ferns Trail (1.4km), Rambutan Trail (0.4km), Langur Trail (0.15km) and Macque Trail (0.35km). All of them are relatively short distances which means kids will be able to go on them pretty effortlessly!

The trails have been specially curated to provide visitors insight into the ways of life during the kampung days as well as into the variety of floral and faunal species found in Thomson Nature Park.

If you love nature, then go on the Stream and Ferns Trail which enables visitors to appreciate the freshwater habitat in Thomson Nature Park and observe the great diversity of ferns and aquatic animals present. Personally, I think the Ruins and Figs Trail is the most interesting trail of the lot because it will bring visitors along a trail where there will be plenty of abandoned and old buildings to spot, giving them a chance to experience the heritage highlights of the Hainan Village through carefully conserved ruins.

Thomson Nature Park is unlike your usual nature parks in Singapore. The presence of an abandoned Hainanese village with its ruins scattered throughout the park definitely makes it an intriguing day out with the kids, giving them a glimpse of what life was like there in the past.

Address: Off Old Upper Thomson Road
Opening hours: 7am – 7pm daily (entering or remaining in the park after 7pm is not allowed)

4. Jurong Eco-Garden

Just a stone's throw away from Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle is Jurong Eco-Garden, the 'green lungs' of CleanTech Park and Singapore’s first freshwater swamp forest located within an industrial park. If we had not visited Thow Kwang, we would not have discovered this gem of a find. Simply because the Eco-Garden has an amazing variety of wildlife and nature and is home to many birds, dragonflies, butterflies and insects.

Spread over four areas - Summit Forest, Wildlife Corridor, Stream Ravine and Freshwater Swamp Forest - the 5-hectare park intersperse building parcels seamlessly with green spaces. One interesting station to visit is the Composting Station which features the processes how horticulture waste are converted into resources. If you are planning to expose nature to the kids minus the crowds, Jurong Eco-Garden will be your best bet!

Address: 1 Clean Tech Loop, Singapore 609434

5. Nature Playgarden at HortPark

There is a new playgarden at HortPark but you cannot find a single seesaw or slide here. Rather, the Nature Playgarden at HortPark is designed to encourage kids to spend more time outdoors and reconnect with nature. Built with pre-schoolers in mind, the playgarden is best for kids aged between 3 and 6 years old.

This playgarden is NParks' first Biophilic Playgarden, which integrates play features with more natural elements such as trees and sand. In all, there are a total of nine play features at the playgarden. There are none of the usual slides, seesaws or even climbing structures that one usually associates with playgrounds but I love how the playgarden has ingeniously blended play activities with nature... along with plenty of hideouts for kids to explore. Read more about it in my review HERE.

Address: 33 Hyderabad Road (off Alexandra Road), Singapore 119578
Opening hours: Daily except for Mondays.
*The playgarden is lit by natural sunlight only. For your own safety, please refrain from entering at night or during bad weather.
Admission: FREE

Advertorial

Do you know what I absolutely hate about giving my kids assessment books and past years' papers to do?

Marking them.

Even armed with the answer sheet, I find it extremely time-consuming to mark every question... especially for Math problem sums and Science Open-ended questions where I have to read through everything to award marks.

No wonder Ale is always saying, "Papa asks me to do so many assessment books but he still hasn't marked them! Then I do for what???"😅😅😅

And don't even get me started on the time spent on going through their mistakes and making them do corrections.

BUT BUT BUT, what if I told you there was a much simpler, fuss-free and convenient way. And no, your kid does not have to step out of the house to head to a tuition centre. EVERYTHING is online and at the tip of your child's (and your) fingers. And in these unprecedented Covid-19 times - even though at the time of writing, tuition and enrichment centres have been allowed to re-open in Phase 2 - having lessons online is certainly better, more convenient and safer.

So say hello to Geniebook!

Geniebook is an online, assessment-based learning tool that offers a powerful and targeted way to sharpen a student’s academic performance and confidence.

And it is not your usual tuition centre.

For starters, Geniebook is powered by A.I to generate questions based on the child's strengths and weaknesses. These questions then come in the form of bite-sized worksheets - which can be done online via its website or the app on Android and iOS devices - and as the child tackles more questions over time, the system will be able to identify which concepts he/she is weak at.

Both Ash and Ale have been using Geniebook for close to 4 weeks now - E Math & A Math for Ash and Math for Ale - and can I just say it amazes me and the wifey that they are now actively completing worksheet after worksheet on a daily basis! Unbelievable.

How Geniebook can help your child

Learning is more effective

Without a doubt, the strength of Geniebook lies in its proprietary A.I. which seeks to pinpoint areas of a subject which a child finds more challenging. It is able to detect children's strengths and weaknesses and generates relevant questions to them for practice.

Geniebook covers all aspects of English, Maths and Sciences for Primary 2 to Secondary 4 levels. Qualified teachers and editors, with the help of patented technology, review millions of student attempts to get insights from students’ question attempts. They then create and update questions daily based on the latest syllabus from Ministry of Education. In addition, Geniebook also works with the best education publishers to enhance and expand its offerings.

And the vast number of questions with different difficulty levels clearly works. After a few worksheets, Geniebook is able to rank the topics that Ale is weaker in based on the number of mistakes she made.

And the best part of it? Marking is instant! The solution to the question is shown immediately after each question is submitted so if Ash has got the answer wrong, he will be able to see the correct solution with the question and mistakes he made still fresh in his head.

Compare this to an assessment paper that he did and I only had time to mark it 2 weeks later - by the time I sit down with him to go through the mistakes, he may have already forgotten the questions!

Each worksheet generated generally takes about 30 minutes to complete and can consist of a mix of MCQ and Structured questions. While the MCQs are marked instantaneously, the structured questions are sent to Geniebook's teachers to be marked (because marks can still be awarded for correct workings) which will take about 3 days. If the answer required is too long to be typed out, the child can take a photo to submit the answer too.

Learning is more convenient

Every topic in the subject is covered in Geniebook's vast database of questions, which makes it a breeze to simply generate worksheets based on the topics (300 personalised worksheets per subject!) that your child wants to practise for.

And besides worksheets, Geniebook offers LIVE video lessons with tutors in tandem with topics that are taught in school too, AT NO EXTRA COST!

Lessons are conducted online once a week based on the respective school level at a fixed day and time. For each lesson, the tutor will prepare a special worksheet for students to attempt.

Ale joined in one lesson on Fractions which I stole a few peeks and I have to say the lesson was anything but a monotonous one! The tutor kept the 1-hour lesson lively and engaging throughout, and something tells me Ale is already looking forward to the next one. As for me, I'm just happy that she can attend the lesson from home and that I don't have to send her down to a tuition centre. 😆

Learning is more structured

As adults, we all know how goal setting and having a schedule is so important in our work. Likewise for our kids who are prepping for tests and exams.

Through the parent's Geniebook App (which I will get to in detail in a bit), both parent and child can plan a weekly study schedule in tandem with the topics being taught in school. Worksheets can be generated based on the schedule, with deadlines being set for the completion of the worksheets.

I guess this is especially important during this period, when we have exited Circuit Breaker with our kids having Home-Based Learning (HBL) the past few months. For sure, HBL isn't quite the same as learning in the classroom so with exams looming, the anxiety in some students and parents can be very real. With Geniebook being able to offer a structured way of practising and revising concepts, parents and students need not be as anxious when it comes to revision.

And remember when I mentioned earlier that the A.I. is able to pick out the child's mistakes? In fact, Geniebook is able to compile all the past questions which the child had attempted wrongly every 2 weeks into a Revision Worksheet.

This way, the child will be able to study the mistakes again and generate a worksheet which comprises of the questions that he/she had gotten wrong previously. Personally, I find that extremely useful because in this way, both Ale and Ash will be able to focus on the mistakes they made, and practise the questions once again. This beats just doing corrections... which more often than not, is just doing it for the sake of doing, no?

Learning is more rewarding

Now I can safely say this is the MOST appealing part for the kids. Just ask Ash and Ale!

For every worksheet completed, the child is able to earn Bubbles, or reward points which can be used to redeem for free gifts. Yes, I know what you are thinking - it's those useless gifts like pencils, erasers, sweets and rulers.

Nope, you are wrong. Well, I was wrong too.

Geniebook obviously had done its homework and has included redeemable gifts like these:

Yes, that's an App Store and Google Play Gift Card worth $30 each!

For Ash who was initially reluctant to do the worksheets ('cos "What? Extra homework!!!!"), his eyes lit up when he saw the Google Play gift card. "Ooh, I can get a new character for my Brawl Stars game!" he exclaimed. 😂

And the range of gifts available is amazing! There are hundreds (yes, hundreds) of categories to choose from... even a Nintendo Switch!

As an added bonus, students can vie for the top spot in a leaderboard where Bubbles will be awarded to the top performers too. How's that for motivation?

How Geniebook can help you, the parent

Stay woke with the Parent App

The child downloads the normal Geniebook app to attempt the worksheets while parents can download the Geniebook Parent app which basically allows you to keep track of your child's progress... and more.

If you are setting the app for the first time, you can even input your child's upcoming test or exam topics and select the relevant topic worksheets to practise.

Not only can you set a study schedule for your child, you can add new worksheets directly from the app and keep track of their work progress.

Deadlines for the worksheets can be set, and you will even receive a reminder three days before the worksheet is due.

If your child starts on a worksheet, you will be notified. Likewise when your child finishes the worksheet.

Once the child has completed the worksheet, you can view their answers and mistakes immediately, and even a daily and weekly results view of the worksheets completed.

Saves time. Lots and lots of it!

Because the worksheets are marked either with instant solutions or by experienced teachers, parents need not spend time marking their kids' work. WOOHOO! This, to me, is probably the best feature of the Geniebook.

And for the questions they got wrong, step-by-step workings are provided which explain everything to the child so that we parents don't have to. No need to vomit blood. LOL.

Come test or exam time, I also do not have to skim through the various assessment books to look for past mistakes for revision. Geniebook's A.I. recommendations that tell me exactly which topics my kids can improve on. Win already.

Hassle-free

No more rushing to bookstores to buy assessment books, or downloading and printing of papers from the web, or photocopying other school's exam papers. Simply just tick off the topics you want your child to practise, and a worksheet is generated in seconds!

In fact, Geniebook started building the A.I. platform from scratch 10 years ago, focused on a singular objective for its students to learn faster and do better which is why while HBL was mostly a scramble for adaptation for most tuition centres, Geniebook had already perfected its live video lessons and online worksheets. And that translates to the ultimate hassle-free convenience for both students and parents.

Well, that and the thought of no more rushing all over the island for classes and having to contend with traffic and parking! 😁

P.S. At the time of writing this post, the kids were still in alternate weeks of HBL. Now, school has since fully resumed and with it, comes the many tests and exams that were inevitably delayed due to Circuit Breaker. So yes, both Ash and Ale are busy preparing for their tests now and so will your kids. They are still using Geniebook diligently (which is a good thing! 😁) so if you are not sure how or where to get your child started, why not let Geniebook do the recommendations for you?

Singapore's Best Outdoor Parks in each GRC - Which one has your Vote this GE2020? (ALL FREE!)

It's the GE2020 long weekend! No matter which camp you support, I think we can all agree that we all love a good break, especially if we are spending it with our families. And while I don't advocate thronging the malls or meeting friends in large groups, there's nothing like heading outdoors and soaking in some sunshine.

So my suggestion is to bring them to a park, where the area is vast, not confined and social distancing can be kept to a desirable level. But where to bring the kids? In the spirit of GE - that'sGo Exercise🤣 - I've grouped the best outdoor parks to enjoy with the family in the respective GRCs and SMCs!

And yes, all are FREE to enjoy!

So which is your fave? It's time to vote with your legs!!! 😁

Here's the list - in alphabetical order:
(All the GRCs are represented while only some SMCs feature parks within their boundaries)

ALJUNIED GRC

Bedok Reservoir Park
Location: Along Bedok Reservoir Road

Located in the north of Bedok New Town and a converted sand quarry, Bedok Reservoir Park surrounds the 88-hectare Bedok Reservoir, making it a popular place for families to chill and exercise together. One lap round the reservoir is a mere 4.3km, so it makes good for a leisurely jog or bicycle ride with the family, with its gorgeous sunset a bonus if you are there in the evenings. The track around the reservoir is straightforward, and consists a mix of pavement and pebbly path with the beauty of the route being the fact that the kids are able to stop any time to play, kick a ball, fly a kite or just sit down for a picnic.

Want even more adrenaline? Head to Forest Adventure within the park,an aerial obstacle tree course where kids and adults can imagine yourselves to be Tarzan and Jane among a myriad of obstacles 5m above ground, including four giant zip-lines which allow you to zip over the water surface and get up close with Mother Nature.

ANG MO KIO GRC

Bishan - Ang Mo Kio Park
Location: Along Bishan Road and Ang Mo Kio Ave 1

What once was a concrete canal which ran through both of the old Bishan Parks is now a naturalised, meandering river filled with aquatic life. River Plains (formerly Bishan Park 2) consists of a playground, Dog Run and a new addition - an inclusive playground which is an all-access play facility for children with different abilities. Features include a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and wheelchair swing, allowing children with special needs to play together with their non-disabled peers.

Credit: NParks Singapore
Pond Gardens (formerly Bishan Park 1) is where the action picks up though – with two exciting playgrounds (one of which is a water play area but currently closed due to Covid-19) and the Therapeutic Garden which is specially designed to engage the senses with a landscape of plants divided into four zones: Fragrance zone, Biodiversity zone, Edibles and Medicinal zone and Colours and Textures zone. Kids will also be able to get close to the river bank, and observe the wildlife in the water. Who knows, they may just be able to catch a glimpse of the purple herons (which have been said to make regular appearances at the river) too!

BISHAN-TOA PAYOH GRC

MacRitchie Reservoir
Location: Along Lornie Road

There are two boardwalks at MacRitchie that you can explore with the kids, with each taking approximately one hour. The first is the 1.5 km Chemperai Trail which starts at the western end of the reservoir, left from the car park. It is an easy and relaxing walk as it is mostly on boardwalk from start to finish, skirting the edge of the reservoir – which makes it extremely suitable for families with young children. The trail allows for the easy spotting of thriving dragonfly and damselfly communities, as well as a close encounter with interesting trees and plants along the boardwalk.

Source
The second trail, Prunus Trail, starts near the entrance of MacRitchie Nature Trail from MacRitchie Reservoir Park. It is the shorter boardwalk, part of Prunus-Petai Trail and is a relatively easy trail. Aside from the intriguing plants and trees, keep a lookout for native creatures of the forest. Tread softly, talk quietly and you might be rewarded with sights of the Common Sun Skink, Clouded Monitor Lizard and Oriental Whip Snake basking in the sun, Plantain and Slender squirrels leaping gracefully from tree to tree, a cheeky Long-tailed Macaque or two.

At the end of the Prunus Trail, you will arrive at the junction of Petai Trail and MacRitchie Nature Trail. Opt  to continue on the boardwalk via Petai Trail, a relatively quiet trail, you will be able to see more wildlife and the occasional glimpses of native birds.

TreeTop Walk
Location: Start the trail from the car park at Venus Drive

The TreeTop Walk is the highlight of several long hiking routes in MacRitchie Reservoir Park. It brings visitors through the different stages of a mature secondary forest. Saunter along the 250m-long freestanding suspension bridge between the two highest points in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (MacRitchie) - the first of its kind in Singapore. From the suspension bridge, visitors get a bird’s eye view of the forest canopy and may, perhaps, spot a Clouded Monitor Lizard, Common Sun Skink, Plantain Squirrel or Long-tailed Macaque.

The walkway only allows for one-direction traffic, with entrance to the bridge being from the Ranger Station via Peirce track. The distance to the start of the TreeTop Walk is approximately 2.5km (a 45mins to 1hr walk) from the car park at Venus Drive. Therefore, a round trip including the TreeTop Walk is about 5.5 km.

BUKIT PANJANG SMC

Zhenghua Nature Park
Location: Bangkit Road Entrance, Behind Block 248 Bangkit Road

Located in Bukit Panjang, Zhenghua Park stretches for about 2.5 km along the BKE, linking the Bukit Panjang Park Connector to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Serving as a green buffer for the reserve, the nature park is also home to a playground for kids.

The playground is situated some distance behind Block 248 Bangkit Road, and it adopts a more rugged theme with climbing structures and slides to keep the little ones happy. In addition, the entire playground is built on a huge sandbox for children to engage in imaginative play.

Granted that the playground equipment is pretty normal compared to other playgrounds in the list but if you are looking for a pleasant retreat (read: playgrounds free from overcrowding with kids) from the hustle and bustle of the usual playgrounds, this will be your best bet.

CHOA CHU KANG GRC

Kranji Marshes
Location: 11 Neo Tiew Lane 2, Singapore 718814

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Location: 301 Neo Tiew Crescent, 718925 (*To access the new extension, enter via the new entrance at Kranji Way)

Make your way through the mangrove forest boardwalks, or watch the birdlife over the freshwater wetlands – especially during the September to March migratory season. Boardwalks keep visitors safe – and their feet dry – as they venture deep into the mangroves to catch sight of tree climbing crabs scuttling up trunks of trees, mudskippers skimming across swamp waters and archerfish shooting insects with jets of water.

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve extension is more kids-friendly, with three different boardwalks catering to all nature enthusiasts. The Mid-canopy Walk immerses visitors in the understory of a secondary forest through an elevated, 120m-long boardwalk, where they can spot birds and insects like cicadas that reside in the mid-canopy region and forest floor while the Coastal boardwalk offers a scenic and breathtaking view of the Kranji waterfront with a lookout point where raptors such as the Ospreys and White-Bellied Sea Eagles can be spotted hunting for prey.

At low tide, visitors can even observe crabs and fish foraging for food in the waters. Lastly, the Forest Trail offers visitors the chance to experience the sights and sounds of the reserve up close, and learn more about the plants and wildlife which are unique to the reserve.

Bukit Batok Nature Park
Location: Along Bukit Batok East Avenue 2 and Bukit Batok East Avenue 6

The 36-hectare park offers a trail that meanders through a well-established secondary forest and the chance to see interesting species of trees and shrubs, and their fruits and flowers. This park was once mined for granite but the quarry has since become a large reflecting pool. Walk to the pond that lies at the foot of a high cliff wall and climb the lookout that reaches more than 10 storeys high to catch stunning views of the quarry.

Credit: NParks Singapore
Don't miss the the war memorial at the top of the hill too. Formerly the site of two war memorials built by the Japanese to honour their dead soldiers, what is left now are two pillars and 120 concrete steps leading to a transmission tower. A plaque has been placed at the foot of the stairs to remind visitors of the significance of this historical site.

EAST COAST GRC

Changi Beach Park
Location: Along Nicoll Drive and Changi Coast Road

As one of the oldest coastal parks tucked away at the northeastern tip of Singapore, Changi Beach boasts stretches of pristine white beaches dotted with coconut palms, BBQ pits, park benches and shelters. Changi Beach also holds the distinction of being one of the only two remaining natural beaches in Singapore – the other being Sembawang Beach - AND also the unsavoury reputation of being the site of the Sook Ching massacre (search for the World War II Memorial Plaque if you are there).

However, the best part of Changi Beach is it is free from the usual crowds that its East Coast Park cousin is famed for. The park is 3.3km long so the relatively short distance makes it a great place to bring the kids for some cycling, scooting or roller-blading. Feeling hungry? Nasi lemak haven in form of Changi Village is only a pedestrian bridge away.

Changi Beach is also home to two playgrounds for kids. One is situated near to Carpark 4 and is pretty much standard playground equipment for younger kids. But if you have kids who yearn for more climbing and adventure, then the playground closer to the northeastern tip of the park (near Carpark 1) will be the one to gravitate towards.

Changi Point Coastal Walk
Location: 51 Lorong Bekukong, Changi, Singapore 499172

This boardwalk hugs the scenic Changi coastline from Changi Beach Club to Changi Sailing Club. The boardwalk is made up of six segments:

- Sunset Walk for a splendid view of the sunset, flanked by a hill of lush greenery on one side and the sea on the other.
- Kelong Walk: a stretch of the boardwalk with kelong stilts built over water.
- Cliff Walk: built slightly inland, this part is a path through lush greenery. Viewing decks along this stretch at vantage points provide panoramic views.
- Sailing Point Walk: the longest stretch of the boardwalk, and provides open views of the sea.
- Beach Walk: second longest stretch of the boardwalk and faces the Serangoon Harbour and Changi Beach.
- Creek Walk: this portion lies on the southern bank of Sungei Changi.

With marine life and birds being sure visitors here, the best time to visit is in the late afternoon to catch the sunset. The boardwalk totals 1.2 km and is extremely easy for children. Continuing the walk from Changi Beach Club to Changi Village covers a total of 2.6 km and forms the Changi Point Coastal Walk.

Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin brings one back to the kampong days, showcasing what Singapore was like in the 1970s. The best way to explore Pulau Ubin is to rent a bicycle and ride around the Island. And the most famous attraction on the island is the rich ecosystem of Chek Jawa Wetlands where families can catch a glimpse of extremely rare ecosystems, animals and plants. Stroll along the 1km-long boardwalk and marvel at the different species coexisting with the mangroves. Be sure to check tide times and go during low tide periods!

At low tide, take a closer look at some of the strange animals that live among the rocky shore, including barnacles, crabs and fierce shell-drilling snails. In fact, there are so many species that dwell in Chek Jawa that each return visit is likely to stumble onto new discoveries! The landscape, too, is constantly changing with the tide.

HOLLAND-BUKIT TIMAH GRC

Dairy Farm Nature Park
Location: Along Dairy Farm Road

The 63-hectare Dairy Farm Nature Park serves as an alternative recreational venue to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve with two biking trails, with catering to the intermediate level of riding, and the other for beginners who wish to have the thrill of mountain biking. Be sure to end your biking trail at the south-western end of the park where the Singapore Quarry lies. Here, it has been transformed into a wetland habitat and boasts a magnificent view of the quarry.

For something less relaxing, go on the Wallace Trail at Dairy Farm Nature Park. The 1-km long Trail is a relatively easy trek, taking visitors through a dense forested area which used to house a kampung community. In fact, you can still see signs of past ‘civilisation’ – remnants of walls of houses, and wells. You will also come across a number of little meandering streams with crystal clear water. Kids will have a field day treating their tiny feet to a cool dip, and trying to spot pond skaters skipping on the surface too!

Also, be sure to make a stop at the Wallace Education Centre, Singapore’s first field study hub for schools. Located in a restored cow shed, the Centre now houses the Wallace Environmental Learning Lab (WELL), as well as an interpretative centre, where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
Location: End of Hindhede Drive

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the only hill dipterocarp forest in Singapore. This is where Singapore’s tallest hill - Bukit Timah Hill - stands at 163m. It is home to more than 840 flowering plants and over 500 animal species. It also boasts Singapore’s highest peak and several winding forest trails. Aside from the four coloured trails, try the out-of-the-way Durian Loop for a much quieter junglewalk.

Credit: NParks Singapore
The Reserve was reopened in October 2016 following the completion of restoration works carried out from September 2014 to October 2016. You can visit the Reserve and journey back in time to the days before Sir Stamford Raffles arrived as you trek among the original vegetation and undisturbed tropical forest. Push yourself to the limits as you climb Singapore’s tallest hill on trails that wind through pockets of hill dipterocarp forest, not found anywhere else on the island. Download the map trail HERE.

NOTE: Certain areas at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (including Kampong Trail) are closed for development as part of Rifle Range Nature Park until 2nd Quarter 2021.

JALAN BESAR GRC

Gardens by the Bay
Location: 18 Marina Gardens Drive Singapore 018953

I have not heard of anyone living in Singapore who doesn't know about Gardens by the Bay! So aside from the ticketed Cooled Conservatories attractions, there are more to Gardens by the Bay (read: FREE) for families to explore. Start your exploration at The World of Plants, where a multi-sensory encounter with nature is promised. Enjoy the sights of flowers and fruits in bloom, and venture into the Secret Life of Trees, where visitors will learn how to identify different types of tree species. At the Web of Life, take in the impressive sight of topiary animals such as the orang-utan, pangolin and hornbill. The Heritage Gardens is another highlight, with four themed gardens - Indian Garden, Malay Garden, Chinese Garden and Colonial Garden. Each of these gardens will take one through the history and culture of Singapore’s three main ethnic groups and colonial past.

Oh, and how can a child resist the Children's Garden @ Gardens by the Bay? The Children's Garden is specially targeted at children up to age 12 and seeks to further encourage interaction with nature, together with integrated play equipment and water play features spread over four main play zones - Adventure Trail, Rainforest Treehouses, Toddler Play Zone and Water Play Areas. All amid a luscious garden setting, no less. There are obstacles to conquer, treehouses to climb, slides to whiz down, and a sprawling water play area with water splines, a hydro vault, and orchid-shaped splash buckets. Toddlers will not feel left out too, as they will be contented with a dedicated Toddler Play Zone and mini Water Play area.

JURONG GRC

Jurong Lake Gardens
Address: Along Yuan Ching Road and Boon Lay Way

The new 53-hectare Lakeside Garden is one huge park that will be more than enough to offer a day of fun and activities whether it is for families, couples or individuals. Kids will no doubt love Forest Ramble which is the largest nature playgarden in the heartlands. The 2.3-hectare playgarden is HUGE and comprises of 13 adventure stations for kids to explore, while being set in a natural environment consisting of streams and plants.

Most interestingly, the playgarden's stattions are designed to emulate the movement of animals which inhabit a freshwater swamp forest. What this means is the play structures are designed to allow kids to mimic the movements of a monkey, frog, heron, crab, squirrel and even an otter!

There are also water play areas in the park - the Tidal Play Pool and Sand Play Pool. Kids can enter the Tidal Play Pool by walking down a gentle slope. Periodically, water will gush out from the steps, making the water level rise (up to 30cm in depth) which gives kids the opportunity to learn about natural tide cycles! At the Sand Play Pool, kids can experience the varying textures of sand while observing how water movements create wave-sculpted ripples in the sand.

Visitors can also head to Rasau Walk, a 300-metre meandering boardwalk along the water’s edge or zoom towards Grasslands which is dominated by tall grasses and small hills - AND totally made for Instagram!

KEBUN BARU SMC

Thomson Nature Park
Location: Off Old Upper Thomson Road

MARINE PARADE GRC

East Coast Park
Location: Along East Coast Parkway and East Coast Park Service Road

East Coast Park is certainly no stranger to almost everyone on the island, with its beach being the default chill venue for friends and families who wish to mingle together. For families with kids though, the super big playground at Marine Cove is a must-go.

Or head to the newest attraction to open at East Coast Park - the 5.4-hectare Cyclist Park boasts two new cycling circuits targeted at learners and experienced cyclists, a nature playgarden, as well as F&B and retail outlets for families.

Located within Area D of East Coast Park, at the previous site of Goldkist Chalets (or UDMC Chalets if you are as old as me), Cyclist Park is a one-stop hub for cyclists where visitors can practise cycling techniques at the two cycling circuits, as well as purchase and repair bicycles.

The 280m-long Learner Circuit is designed for beginners to train their clanace and stamina, with gentle slopes and slight narrowing of tracks at certain points of the circuit. The 500-metre long Advanced Circuit, with its undulating tracks, sharp turns, gradual  granite steps and narrow bridge, provides a fun challenge for more experienced cyclists. Cyclists can first test their balancing skills at the zig-zag columns and then take on the curvy tracks. There are even extremely narrow tracks and a Wave Bridge to finish everything off!

Not cycling? No problem. Families with children can enjoy a new nature playgarden at East Coast Park within the Cyclist Park too. The playgarden uses natural materials such as upcycled wood to create curated play features for children to engage in spontaneous play amid nature, much like the one at HortPark.

MARSILING-YEW TEE GRC

Marsiling Park
Location: Woodlands Centre Road adjacent to Bukit Timah Expressway

After a 22-month makeover, Marsiling Park re-opens with plenty of activity areas and amenities for families with kids. Popular elements of the park - such as the viewing tower, Chinese pavilions and stone bridge - have been retained and improved, including the addition of boardwalks which extend to the water at certain parts around the perimeter of the reservoir.

For kids, the main highlight of the park has got to be the inclusion of three new playgrounds - the first being a butterfly-shaped playground with climbing ropes!

There is also a ninja warrior-style playground located just opposite the butterfly playground, which might just appeal to older kids.

Got younger kids? Then head to the Fun Play area located at a short walk away (nearer to the car park entrance). Here, kids get to hit on play equipment with musical elements for an interactive play experience. If you are feeling peckish after all the play, there is a 24-hour F&B outlet at the park.

MOUNTBATTEN SMC

Bay East Garden
Location:  Via Tanjong Rhu Road

Part of Gardens by the Bay, Bay East Garden is the second largest of the three gardens and offers a tranquil respite from the bustling city and a stunning view of the Singapore skyline.

Set amidst beautiful pavilions, wide open lawns, and amazing views of the iconic Conservatories and Supertrees against the Marina skyline, Bay East Garden is the perfect place to chill out with a good book, enjoy a quiet stroll, or have a family picnic.

NEE SOON GRC

Sembawang Hot Spring Park
Location: Accessible via Gambas Avenue

Sembawang Hot Spring Park re-opended early this year with new cascading hot spring pools, a hot spring water collection point, educational panels, a F&B outlet and even enhanced accessibility for wheelchair users! This is Singapore’s only natural hot spring and its water used to be bottled commercially by Fraser and Neave, under the brand name of Seletaris.

The park's centerpiece attraction is the Cascading Pool where water emerges at the top at 70°C and cascades down one tier at 60°C, then 45°C and finally at 40°C at the foot of the pool. Here, visitors can rest on the built-in seats at the edge of the 40°C pool and enjoy a foot bath.

If you prefer to soak your feet in hotter water, head to the Main Water Collection Point. This area allows for different sizes of water collection containers or buckets to be used. And specially for kids, there is also an Educational Zone which consists of an interactive water play feature which allows kids to learn more about the groundwater cycle, as well as play safely with the hot spring water.

Read my review HERE.

Oasis Waterpark @ Nee Soon East
Location: 307 Yishun Ring Road, Singapore 760307 (10-min walk from Yishun MRT Station); 10am - 10pm daily

Now this isn't exactly a nature park but since it's free entry for all, why not include it? 😁 This is the first community water park set within a housing estate in Singapore, and consists of three main zones of water play.

The first is a circular 3.5m-tall water curtain, which sprays mist and water at the same time while the main play centrepiece is the water playground which has your usual spray poles, water guns and jet spray curtains. Younger kids can flock to the smaller play zone which has a mini water slide and other water play features. The third water play zone comprises of various water play features like a water fountain and wading pools.

Lower Seletar Reservoir Park
Location: Yishun Ave 1, Lower Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore 769139

Calm and peaceful with turquoise waters and balmy breezes, Lower Seletar Reservoir Park is a pleasant place for leisure activities, both on land and in water. That includes a Family Bay area which comes with a water play area with small fountains and meandering “rivers”! The wading pool is perfect for kids to frolic in as the water level isn't that deep.

PASIR RIS-PUNGGOL GRC

Coney Island Park
Location: Beside Punggol Promenade Nature Walk

Head to Coney Island Park, Singapore's rustic nature 'playground' for young and old, for a day of fun with the family. Visitors can enter the island through the East Entrance by Pasir Ris Coast Industrial Park 6, off Lorong Halus or through the West Entrance at Punggol Promenade.

Do NOT expect to find any kids' playgrounds or any other artificial structures here. Everything is deliberately kept rustic on the island, with many of the natural elements being retained so that it is ecologically sustainable. One example is the use of the timber from uprooted Casuarina trees, which were collected and recycled into park signage, seats, benches, boardwalk, and exhibits.

Being rich in history, the 50-ha Coney Island Park is home to a wide variety of habitats, with many interesting and diverse flora and fauna. Veer from the main path and step onto the many earth tracks for a chance to explore what the natural environment has to offer.

Punggol Waterway
Location: Along Sentul Crescent Road

Designed with four themes to cater to everyone of all ages, Punggol Water Park has something in store for every visitor. The Nature Cove features a picturesque view of the Waterway, with a lawn area for families to spend lazy weekends. The Heritage Zone offers gorgeous greenery along the stretch of the old Punggol Road while the Green Gallery is home to the mature trees which are conserved together with the natural terrain of the park.

But it is at the Recreation Zone where kids can go wild at the huge water play and sand play areas. And if there is still energy to be expended, head down to the nearby 5km long waterfront Punggol Promenade where it links up to the Lorong Halus Wetland via a bridge – a biodiversity haven.

Pasir Ris Park
Location: Pasir Ris Park stretches from Pasir Ris Road to Jalan Loyang Besar and can be accessed through Elias Road and Pasir Ris Green. To access the Mangrove Boardwalk, park at Carpark C.

We all know about the giant spiderweb-like structure and other playground amenities that Pasir Ris Park has to offer. But how about a Mangrove Boardwalk? And the good thing about this hidden gem is that it is suitable for people of all ages - even stroller-friendly! This is a definite thrill for families who are up for some crab or mudskipper-spotting. Along the way, get ready to spot peculiar 'humps' in the ground made by mud lobsters, as well as the scampering tree-climbing crabs.

Do make sure you walk until the end of the Boardwalk too for it holds yet another gem — a jetty overlooking Sungei Tampines. It is here where kids can try to spot different forms of wildlife; ranging from herons, kingfishers, water monitor-lizards, gliding lizards (otherwise known as 'flying dragons'), fishes like halfbeaks and archer fishes, and even  dog-faced water snakes.

RADIN MAS SMC

The Southern Ridges
Location: Off Henderson Road

Hike through the great outdoors andenjoy the serenity of the Southern Ridges. Comprising 10km of hill trails that connect Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark, Kent Ridge Park and Labrador Nature Reserve, these ridges are one of the best spots in Singapore to enjoy panoramic views of the city, harbour and the Southern Islands. If you have time, walk through Forest Walk and Canopy Walk along the bridges cutting through the Adinandra belukar, a distinct secondary forest, and enjoy the rich variety of flora and fauna on display.

The most photographed location has got to be Henderson Waves, which connects Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park. Standing 36m above Henderson Road, it is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore, and is best known for its distinctive wave-like structure consisting of a series of undulating curved ‘ribs’.

SEMBAWANG GRC

Sembawang Park
Location: At the end of Sembawang Road

Sembawang Park has a huge surprise in store for kids – a Battleship Playgound. Presumably as a nod to Sembawang's naval history, the Battleship comes complete with gun turrets, smoke stacks, propellers and even a rudder. I have to admit; I myself did a double take when I first saw the playground simply because for as long as I can remember, I can't recall the last time when a playground made me go 'WOW!'.

There are loads of rope ladders, rock walls and grid nets for kids to navigate and keep them duly occupied. To top it all off, there are the red climbing net reminiscent of a naval flagstaff and insanely fun pendulum swing beside the Battleship too!

Woodlands Waterfront
Location: Admiralty Road West

A coastal park boasting a 1.5km long waterfront promenade, a 11-hectare park, a large multi-generational playground and a 400m ex-naval jetty, Woodlands Waterfront is a park worth visiting no matter how off the beaten track it may be. For one, the two-storeys high netted Sky Bridges and Sky Cabins will no doubt make older kids squeal in delight and excitement.

There is a mini playground as well, with slides and swings to keep younger toddlers duly entertained. Or families can take a relaxing stroll along the refurbished jetty which offers panoramic views of the park and the Straits of Johor.

Admiralty Park
Location: 31 Riverside Rd, Singapore 739087

Now this certainly needs no introduction. With 26 slides – the most number of slides in any park in Singapore - the outdoor playground at Admiralty Park has got to be the largest and best one in the northern part of Singapore!

The playground capitalises on the undulating terrain to site the three main play areas – Junior Play, Adventure Play and the Family Terracing Play – catering to children of all ages and featuring diverse play equipment that encourage group and multi-generation interactions. Yes, even teens and adults are welcome to go on the slides!

In fact, the widest slide and the longest slide in a public park can be found here. At the top of the hill, you can also find a flying fox that whizzes around a circle which will be a hit with the older kids.

The 20-ha nature area also encompasses a diverse mix of secondary forest, mangrove, riverine and open grassland habitats, and is home to more than 100 species of flora and fauna. With several trails within the 20-hectare nature area, families can discover the different species living in the forest, spot hordes of dragonflies and observe monkeys in their natural habitat.

SENGKANG GRC

Sengkang Riverside Park
Location: Anchorvale Street abutting Sungei Punggol

Featuring a constructed wetland and rich biodiversity, Sengkang Riverside Park is made up of three areas along Sungei Punggol River—the Visitor Centre, the Civic Event Lawn and Singapore’s largest man-made wetland, Sengkang Floating Island. Hike on the park’s trails to view the marshes and get close to the inhabitants of the marshland. Home to many aquatic plants, the wetland doubles up as a
wildlife habitat and attracts a variety of mangrove birds and damselflies. Alternatively, embark on an educational journey to explore the fruit trees planted around the park such as the starfruit, chiku and dragon fruit trees.

And it's a great park for kite-flying too! From the Visitor Centre, head inwards to the park where a large field awaits. Here, the wind blows rather consistently as there are no visible obstructions nearby.

TAMPINES GRC

Tampines Eco Green
Location: Tampines Avenue 9 and Tampines Avenue 12

TANJONG PAGAR GRC

Singapore Botanic Gardens
Location: 1 Cluny Rd, Singapore 259569

The only tropical garden to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Singapore Botanic Gardens boasts an impressive oasis of greenery, which has been developed along a 3-core concept: The three cores are Tanglin (the heritage core retaining the old favourites and charms of the historic Gardens), Central (the tourist belt of the Gardens) and Bukit Timah (the educational and discovery zone). Each core presents a different and exciting range of attractions.

If you are bringing the kids, two extensions of the Gardens will be specifically of interest to them. Firstly, the Learning Forest features a network of boardwalks and elevated walkways that allow visitors to explore habitats ranging from a freshwater forest wetland to a lowland rainforest. Kids will love the Canopy Web which allows visitors to experience being in the canopy of a forest from a height of about 8m!

Once done, visit the new Gallop Extension, an extension of the Tyersall-Gallop Core of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and the only location in Singapore where visitors can see a curated interpretation of various habitats that are representative of forests in the region. The Mingxin Foundation Rambler's Ridge will be perfect for that short morning or evening nature walk while Rambler's Ridge has a ridge-top hiking trail which leads to the highest point in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Okay, so it is only 40m above sea level which is hardly Bukit Timah Hill standard but it is a trail that even younger kids can complete on their own.

Jacob Ballas Children's Garden
Location:  481 Bukit Timah Rd, Singapore 259769

This is Asia’s first garden dedicated to children and since its refurbishment in 2017, it is now Asia's largest children's garden and even has a new Forest Playground! The 4-hectare garden is packed with interesting features and stations such as the Sensory Garden where kids learn about nature by engaging their senses of smell and touch. Other top attractions include the water play area and an awesome tree house furnished with a spiralling slide.

But the fave attraction for kids has got to be the forest playground where they can explore a tree top canopy and finish it off with the flying-fox!

Jubilee Park @ Fort Canning Park
Location: Bounded by Clemenceau Avenue and River Valley Road

Beyond the rich history that Fort Canning Park offers, the park also has wide green spaces for kids to run amok... as well as a brand new playground space.

Jubilee Park is situated opposite Liang Court, and sits on the western slope of Fort Canning Park, which used to host a range of recreational options for Singaporeans, such as River Valley Swimming Pool, Van Kleef Aquarium and the National Theatre in the 20th century. Now, the open space has been restored as a family-friendly node with lots of play structures for kids. For one, they will love putting their balancing skills to the test at this log obstacle course!

There are also bouncy nets, as well as these 3 super long slides which offer different meandering options down to the bottom.

WEST COAST GRC

West Coast Park
Location: Parallel to West Coast Highway

If the East Coast is the King of sandy beaches & cool sea breeze, then the West Coast Park must be the King of playgrounds. It has about SEVEN different types of play areas which cater to different age groups - from the toddlers to even teenagers. And standing at the core of the park is the Adventure Play Area with a giant spiderweb-like structure that allows kids (and adults) to scamper up to dizzying heights.

There are also Ninja Warrior-inspired obstacle courses and a Flying Fox installation that is sure to challenge one’s agility. The little ones do not get left out too - there are two non-sand areas which cater to the youngest of toddlers.

Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk
Location: Along Labrador Villa Road

Located within walking distance of Labrador Park MRT Station, the 2.1km Labrador Nature & Coastal Walk comprises three distinct segments – Alexandra Garden Trail, Berlayer Creek mangrove trail, and Bukit Chermin Boardwalk.

Crucial to Singapore’s biodiversity, back mangrove species can be found at the Berlayer Creek boardwalk, while coastal cliff vegetation can be found in the nature reserve. Possibly the only mangrove patch in the southern part of Singapore island with the convenience of an integrated MRT station entrance, you are immediately greeted by the lush landscape of the entrance plaza before you enter the 960m Berlayer Creek. Currently one of two remaining mangroves in the south of mainland Singapore, Berlayer Creek is home to a myriad of fauna and flora, including one of the highest densities of molluscs in Singapore.

For kids, the 330m Bukit Chermin Boardwalk that comes after Berlayer Creek will be the highlight. This elevated boardwalk on sea brings them across the mouth of Berlayer Creek and along the coastal foothill of Bukit Chermin. Take a leisurely stroll along this coastal boardwalk, while enjoying the different views of the expansive waters of Keppel Harbour, the lush greenery of Bukit Chermin hill, and the distant rocky cliffs of Sentosa island. During high tide, the low-lying boardwalk will bring you close to the water surface where schools of fishes can be sighted; while at low tide, you can also spot seagrass beds and different species of crustaceans found on the extensive mudflat.

Jurong Eco Garden
Location: 1 Clean Tech Loop, Singapore 609434

HortPark
Location: 33 Hyderabad Road (off Alexandra Road), Singapore 119578

Dubbed the “Gardening Hub” of Singapore, it is a one-stop gardening resource centre and a knowledge centre for plants and gardening, providing planting ideas and solutions. Kids can learn how to grow their first plant, or create their own floral arrangement or terrarium, while older kids can take a course in creating an air plant that grows in little to no soil at all.

Of course, what's a park without playgrounds for kids? In addition to the usual play structures, HortPark is home to be a new playgarden but one cannot find a single seesaw or slide there.

With Phase 2 of post-Covid-19 Circuit Breaker underway, some of the attractions in Singapore have received approvals to re-open. In order to be given the go-ahead, these atttractions must put measures in place to reduce potential transmission risks and support contact tracing. Risk factors for attractions to consider include proximity between visitors, propensity for crowds to form, level of activity and number of high-touch surfaces.

At the time of this post, a total of 25 attractions (excluding the 2 casinos) have been given permission to re-open. Some of them are currently running promotions and I have compiled all of them for you here in one place... just in time for next week's one-week school holidays, perhaps? 😄

This will probably be the only time when all kids will get a one week school holidays break in the middle of July. Strange times we are truly living in. In any case, a break is a break and if Circuit Breaker had me taught me anything, it is that spending time together with the family is never enough.

So if you are planning to head outdoors - with masks and proper safety measures, of course! - I have five suggestions for you. And since events are still not allowed to be organised, the bulk of it have moved onto the virtual online space - I have also ten recommendations for your kids too... most of them are FREE!

Walk beside life-sized Dinosaurs at Jurassic Mile - Singapore's Newest & Coolest Park Connector

$
0
0
Parents with kids who are huge fans of dinosaurs, you might just want to take them on the newest Park Connector in Singapore... because they get to see life-sized dinosaur dioramas as they walk along the pathway.

And they definitely will come face to face with this!

And that stretch of path with dinosaurs? It's aptly named JURASSIC MILE.

Thanks to my dinosaur-crazy nephews, my sister brought them down over the weekend and I knew I had to document it on my blog. 😁

Located just beside Changi Airport Terminal 4's Carpark 4A, it is part of the new Changi Airport Connector which serves to connect Changi Airport to East Coast Park via a pathway where the public can walk, scoot or cycle to and fro.

I don't think the connector is offcially launched because although the pathway is ready, you can't walk all the way to East Coast Park yet due to a barrier at the end of the Jurassic Mile path.

So if you want to visit with the kids now, your best bet is to enter from Terminal 4's Carpark 4A side. If you are driving, simply park your car there and walk towards the Tanah Merah Country Club Garden Course. You will see the brown signs that I had shared above. Continue along the red pathway.

Soon you will find barricades on both sides of the path - one side belongs to Changi Airport while the other belongs to Tanah Merah Country Club.

After a short 120m-walk, the first dinosaur appears.

No, they don't move... in case you are wondering.

And they are all behind fences, meaning one will not be able to get up close and touch them.

I think the main idea of placing the dinosaurs along this stretch of park connector is to make the walk slightly more interesting, especially for kids.

And interesting it certainly was, with these information panels about the dinosaurs!

Hello, Ankylosaurus. You are looking pretty realistic, I must add.

There are a total of 7 different types of dinosaurs along the entire stretch, including these naughty raptors.

Oh, and one can never ever leave out the mighty T-Rex when it comes to a party of dinosaurs!

My fave has got to be this colourful Stegosaurus. 😍

This pair of Parasaurolophus came a close second though.

And the last dinosaur will be towering over you as you approach the final stretch of the pathway.

Make that two because it has a baby for company!

Remember I mentioned it is extremely new? It's so new that I googled and couldn't find anything on it! (So aren't you glad you are reading my blog? 😂😂😂)

And when I was there, there were workers who were still putting the finishing touches. In addition, most of the information panels were not put up yet.

The entire Jurassic Mile is less than 1km long so it's extremely doable for even young kids. You can even bring along their skate scooters or bicycles!

The end of Jurassic Mile connects to East Coast Park, Bedok Jetty and Marina Bay but at the time of writing, the entrance to that is still barricaded.

In reality, the dinosaur dioramas are just that - life-sized dinosaur models that are placed behind fences, that are made to make that walk more entertaining... and stopping to snap photos.

If your kids love dinosaurs, they will love walking up and down the pathway.

And it is a park connector like no other.

Best of all, it's FREE to enjoy for everyone (and still not crowded)!

Staycay Your Way (with 30% credit!) at the Family-Friendly Four Seasons Hotel Singapore

For those with kids, I don't think I need to tell you that staycations are simply superb for the parenting soul. How so? Simply because staycations allow for a quick recharge without the need of lugging huge suitecases and packing excessively.

No passports, no need for hours of travelling and definitely no'are-we-there-yet' moments - which is great especially for families with young kids. On a more practical note, staycations are all that we can enjoy with the current Covid situation around the world. 😅

But staycations need not be boring... if you choose the right family-friendly hotel. Better still if the hotel is situated at a central location, in the vicintiy of good food and shopping AND boasts a roof-top pool like this!

But what exactly makes a five-star hotel family-friendly? Is it the service, the location, the facilities or the people? Well, as we found out during our staycation at Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, it is all of the above... and more.

First, let me preface this post by saying that our staycation was done in early March, before the entire Covid-19 situation flared up. Four Seasons Hotel has since reopened from 1 July 2020 and is proudly SG Clean certified, having met the stringent standards of hygiene and cleanliness outlined by the Singapore government, in addition to the already high requirements by Four Seasons.

So while one may expect certain changes like the discontinuation of buffet breakfasts for now, what definitely wouldn't change is the hospitality provided by the hotel, as notably evidenced from the moment we stepped into our rooms.

What a delightful and personalised welcome! And a bigger wow greeted us when we realised how huge the hotel room actually was.

The thing about newer hotels is space within rooms is often a premium and this can get pretty claustrophobic and chaotic when you have kids staying together - and going crazy all at the same time!

See what I mean? 😂

Not so for Four Seasons, where the rooms are not only big enough but also newly renovated. We stayed in connecting Boulevard rooms, and I love the contemporary design which features soothing tones of mocha, beige and ivory, with burgundy accents. And also with a hint of Peranakan influence too!

As for the bathroom, what can I say? It's one of the most spacious bathrooms I have ever come across in all my hotel stays!

Oh, and I did like the touch of providing toiletries for kids as well - always makes them feel a tad special. 😊

For the adults though, all I can say is Four Seasons beds are the best. They are just super comfy and we literally spent most of our time in the room just lazing on the bed snacking and watching TV... just how a staycation should really be.

And speaking of snacks, Four Seasons Hotel really pampers its guests. 😄

And just in case the wifey and I do not have enough snacks to savour, the kids have their own snacks boxes too!

The other great point about Four Seasons Hotel is its location: it's at Orchard Road but not quite on Orchard Road as well. Located along the quiet stretch of tree-lined Orchard Boulevard, it is away from the bustle of Orchard Road but yet it is only a five-minute walk to ION Orchard. Which also means loads of shopping and dining are within walking distance.

There are two swimming pools at the Four Seasons Hotel Singapore. One is an outdoor lap pool on the third floor which is for adults only.

The other pool is the Family Pool located on the topmost 20th floor but more on that later.

You will also find the spa and lounge on the third floor with the latter open to all guests if you are looking for a nibble or a drink.

Here, cut fruits and cookies in addition to hot and cold bevaregs are provided to all guests at no extra charge.

Ate too much? Don't worry, the huge Fitness Room is also located here. LOL.

After exploring the hotel, we decided to head to Orchard Road for a little bit of shopping and dinner. And when we returned to our room, we found this all perfectly set up in our room.

For hotel guests, you can request Apple TV to be set up in your room at no extra cost - definitely a great perk to spend staycation nights!

And just when I thought sinking into the comfy Four Season Hotel bed while going on a movie marathon couldn't get better, we found these on our table. 😍

Needless to say, we went to bed feeling extremely blissful. And we would have chosen to sleep in more the next day... if not for the lure of breakfast at One-Ninety Restaurant!

As I mentioned earlier, the hotel has done away with buffet breakfast currently due to the Covid situation so breakfast is currently served on an ala-carte basis or you can choose to have breakfast sent to your hotel room.

In fact while we were staying there in March, the hotel had already switched to a semi-buffet style. Food like bread, cereals, fruits were served in a buffet manner but we had to order the mains from the menu and the food would be prepared on the spot.

After breakfast, the kids were all longing to head to the rooftop pool for a swim and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Besaides offering a panoramic view of the city, the family pool is surrounded by cabanas and deck chairs which makes for the perfect location for chilling while the kids go frolicking away in the pool.

And just for kids, there is also a selection of water toys, floating pool games, kickboards and other swimming accessories. And don’t worry if you forgot to bring sunscreen, the hotel provides it for guests too!

So all that is left to do is simply have loads of splashing fun!

But for me, chilling still remains my number one activity. 🤣

Overall, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore certainly lived up to its label as a family-friendly accommodation. We felt utterly pampered by the hotel staff who went out of their way to make the kids feel welcome.

And yes, I still miss that hotel bed very very much.

Happy 14th Birthday Ayd (aka I survived yet another year with a second teen at home)!

$
0
0

Today, yet another one in the family crosses the 14-year-old mark. Wasn't it just last week that I wrote about Ayd's 13th birthday and how I have another teenager in the house???

Now - and just like Ash before him - the wifey and I made it through our first year as parents of Ayd the teenager. And we lived to tell the tale... again!

Growing up, he has always been looking forward to his birthday. In fact, he starts counting down to his next birthday the day after! 😅 I suppose having a birthday one day after National Day always mean something special for him every year. And while this year isn't any different, what's different is we can't celebrate it with our usual gang of friends due to Covid-19.

But as long as he has his fave fried chicken and birthday cake, he will be satisfied. 😁

And that has always been his character since young. He never frets about the big stuff, never compares with others about stuff he has or doesn't have, and never holds grudges. He revels in the simple joys in life (like food & YouTube videos), treats everyone geuninely and never fails to show concern whenever the wifey and I are unwell.

He makes everyday a blessing.

The more he has grown, the more he has blossomed - but on his own terms and at his own pace. I have seen his effort to change and for that, I am so proud of him.

People say that every year into teen-hood means it's a year closer to the time when they leave the home to explore the world on their own. And yes, I (like most parents) fear this new phase of freedom, I’m confident that we are just at the beginning of the most amazing years of his life.

The best years are all around us.

So to Ayd, I want to let you know this:

You made me a Dad for a second time – in a unique way of your own. And even though I lose patience and scold you at times, and you pretty much find me to be irritating too (only sometimes, I hope), please know that I feel blessed that you are my son. You have been such a joy in my life and I pray that you will continue to bring joy to others as well.

Mummy and Papa will always love you, and you will always find the greatest support in us no matter what happens. Remember that, and also remember that you’re never too old to hug us, hold our hands or say you love us.

Happy 14th Birthday, Ayd!

We love you more than words could possibly say.

Playeum closes its play centre at Gillman Barracks after 5 years

Goodbye Playeum.

It has been a good 5 years.

If you are a long time reader of my blog, you will know that I love the concept of Playeum... and my kids similarly love going there when they were younger.

Playeum, in case you don't already know, is NOT an Indoor Playground with the tallest slide or biggest ball pit in Singapore. Instead, it is Singapore's first Children's Centre for Creativty and an independent charity which champions children through play and creativity.

Playeum is a play museum without walls which hopes to inspire children through self-directed exploration and learning and in the process, establish a culture of meaningful and impactful play.

Opened in 2015, Playeum's physical centre at Gillman Barracks is now closed. 😥

But it isn't going away though.

In fact, Playeum will still be focused in using the arts and open-ended play to build creativity, imagination, critical thinking, ideation, collaboration, agility, resilience skills underpinning creative and artistic development and advancement of character overall. More importantly, they will carry on to serve strongly the children from marginalised communities and children with varying disabilities alongside all children and their adults through various channels and platforms.

For starters, Playeum will be continuing its live weekly series, Playeum at Home, every Friday at 4.30pm.

The series looks at discovering different ways of experimenting, playing and creating with everyday recyclable materials that we typically find in our own homes. And is is FREE FOR EVERYONE! Just head HERE for more details.

Read on to find out more about Playeum's new direction going forward.

Visit HERE to see what Playeum's new adventure entails.

[NEW] Alkaff Crescent: 4 Nature-inspired Playgrounds spread over 3 levels at Alkaff Lakeview

$
0
0

The Alkaff Crescent playgrounds, located at the new Bidadari housing estate, are truly quite unique. That's because not only does it consist of FOUR different playgrounds, they are spread over THREE different floors!

Nestled within the Alkaff Lakeview HDB flats cluster, the four playgrounds are connected by an over-arching theme - of water, wetlands, mountains and clouds. And when kids move from the first playground on the ground floor to the final one on the fourth floor, it is designed to give that sense of moving upwards together with nature.

WATER PLAYGROUND
Ground floor, behind Block 118A, Alkaff Lakeview

Designed to mimic waves in the sea, the water-themed playground allows kids to start off by showing off their parkour by scurrying up a ramp.

Then, they come face to face with a long wavy trampoline that blends with the contours of the playground and creates an interesting canvas for children to run or jump on the trampoline, testing their balancing and cognitive skills.

At the end of it, they come face to face with a towering wave where they can climb or take a breather on the hanging hammocks.

The wave also come with a circular opening for access to a small slide which will bring them safely to the 'shore'.

WETLANDS PLAYGROUND
Third floor, Block 115B, Alkaff Lakeview

Located on the third floor of Block 115B, the first thing to catch one's attention is the giant water lily structure protruding from the ground.

Modelled after the wetlands, the playground consists of giant pink petals for kids to weave in and out and perhaps, to enjoy a game of hide-n-seek or catching.

Other elements like green stems with steps and ropes provide a 'ninja-warrior'-like experience for the kids.

A small slide and trampoline completes the playground set-up.

Overall, this playground is more suited for younger kids aged 6 and below as the play structures are less challenging. In addition, the playground is fenced up with only one entry/exit point so this lessens the risk of younger kids wandering away from the playgrounf on their own.

MOUNTAINS PLAYGROUND
Fourth floor, Rooftop Garden, Alkaff Lakeview

After playing among the waves and wetlands on the ground, it's time to scale upwards... and that's where mountains come in.

Located at the roof garden on Level 4, the mountain-themed playground provides a different play experience from the two playgrounds at the lower levels.

Besides having a hilly terrain for kids to climb and run around, kids can go crazy on the spinning disks and big trampoline.

Kids can also attempt to scale a 'mountain' with the aid of climbing ropes and zip down a mountain slide immediately after!

Younger kids can even crawl through a tube maze. I don't recommend parents to attempt that though, unless you want to get stuck. 😂

CLOUDS PLAYGROUND
Fourth floor, Rooftop Garden, Alkaff Lakeview

Located just a few steps away from the Mountains Playground, the cloud-themed playground is designed to correspond to the different layers of nature in our environment. And nothing can get as whimsical as the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of clouds.

Here, the main play structure comes in the shape of a giant cloud, with seat pods, crawl-through tunnels as well as hemispherical silver bowls where kids can sit inside and spin giddily round and round.

Ample benches and seating area are provided for both playgrounds at the rooftop garden so parents are able to chill while the kids run amok.

The closest block of flats to the rooftop playgrounds is Block 115C so just take the lift up tothe fourth level and search for the walkway that leads to the rooftop garden.

If you have some time to kill after the kids are done with the four playgrounds, you may wish to stroll through the garden.

It's pretty well landscaped, with plenty of bright open spaces too.

20 Best (& FREE!) Outdoor Playgrounds in the West of Singapore for Kids [UPDATED]

$
0
0

My last update for the list of outdoor playgrounds in the West of Singapore was slightly more than a year ago and since then, new playgrounds have opened while others were refurbished. In fact, while my previous list contained 12 outdoor playgrounds, I have added another 8 ew entries to the list!

From the massive Forest Ramble outdoor playground (#1) at Jurong Lake Gardens to huge climbing structures (#6), tank (#11), army truck (#12), a Snakes-and-Ladders life-sized boardgame (#8) and even award-winning massive Play Curl structure (#3), I think the western part of Singapore boasts some of the most unique playgrounds!

So if you are planning for some outdoor fun with the kids, why not head down to these outdoor playgrounds located in the West?

BUT FIRST, PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The water playgrounds are currently closed due to Covid-19 and are expected to remain closed for the duration of Phase 2. In addition, certain areas of the playgrounds may be closed for upgrading works as well. If you do come across any, please let me know via Facebook or email so that I can update accordingly. Thanks!

1. Lakeside Garden @ Jurong Lake Gardens

Now this is the real biggie!

Read more about Lakeside Garden in my review HERE.

2. West Coast Park

Although dethroned as the King of Playgrounds in the West by Jurong Lake Gardens, West Coast Park still packs a mean punch... thanks to its SEVEN different types of play areas which cater to different age groups - from the toddlers to even teenagers. Standing at the core of the park is the Adventure Play Area with a giant spiderweb-like structure that allows kids (and adults) to scamper up to dizzying heights.

Scampering up the giant spiderweb-like structure is a no-brainer but there’s more – the Ninja Warrior-inspired obstacle courses and Flying Fox installations are a hit with any one seeking to challenge one’s agility.

The little ones do not get left out too - there are two non-sand areas which cater to the youngest of toddlers.

Address: Parallel to West Coast Highway

3. Play Curl at Yung Ho Springs

Winner of the 2017 Landscape Industry Association (Singapore) Award, the Play Curl playground combines vertical play with discovery and active play experiences.

The massive play structure consists of three towers connected with two bridges, that span the walking path underneath. Each play tower has at least two different climbing routes to get to the bridge. Children can choose between a “difficult” or an “easy” way up depending on their own climbing skills. Inside children can relax and lounge or find different ways to continue their path.

The entire structure is enclosed so the children wont be able to fall or climb out accidentally. At the same time, they can always be watched from outside by parents.

Children can move around and climb into the play curl to explore more play elements inside, like hanging handles, ropes and rock climbing. At the end of it all, they can zip back to the ground level via one of two slides.

If you have younger kids, do pop by the other play structures beside the Play Curl too. The entire area is pretty hug, with plenty of play equipment to keep the kids - and even toddlers - busy!

4. Airplane Playground at Yung Ho Springs

Visiting Yung Ho Springs is like killing two birds with one stone - after visiting the Play Curl, walk towards Block 158 (behind Block 157) and let your kids continue to play at this Airpcraft playground.

It may only consist of one play structure but it isn't like your usual plastic structure. Instead, it is made up of concentric metal circles which form the body of the ariplane with a netting beneath it. This encourages kids to climb in whatever way they like, and make their way to the cockpit.

5. Jurong Spring Playfields

Instead of just the usual kids' playground and fitness corner found at most HDB estates, the Jurong Spring Playfields incorporate playgrounds, fitness corners, a basketball court and open green spaces to encourage residents as well as families to go outdoors and keep fit together.

For starters, kids will not be disappointed as there are a total of THREE playgrounds to choose from! The ever-popular Vertical Playground is here, in all its cheery yellow glory... and with a slight twist too. Kids will be able to climb up to the top of the structure and descend quickly via a tube slide.

Just beside it lies a giant rope structure which promises to offer lots of climbing fun for kids.

Younger kids need not feel left out, thanks to a smaller playground designed just for them.

And while the kids are kept busy at the playgrounds, parents can work up a sweat storm too at the fitness corner which consists of resistance bands and even weights!

6. Canopy Playground @ Block 247 Jurong East St 24

Tampines and Woodlands aren't the only towns with Canopy playgrounds. You can find a similar one in the West - at Jurong East!

Comprising of three towers, kids can scurry up the three-storey climbing structure via climbing rope ladders at two of the towers, traverses across the cargo netting and experience a quick descent through one of the two bright yellow slides at each end of the structure.

For younger kids, there is also a smaller playground located right beside the tower structures.

In addition, there is a giant climbing structure... just in case the kids can more energy to expend.

7. Beauty Garden Park

This outdoor playground at Bt Batok wins for its sheer number of play structures for kids. Housing estate playgrounds usually sport only one or two play structures but this one at Beauty Garden Park has a total of SIX play structures!

In addition to the standard play equipment, it has a climbing polygon structure as well as one that consists of giant rubber strips (above pic) for kids to run up and maintain their balance. And it too incorporates technology into play with these two electronic play structures.

Not to worry for younger kids and toddlers. They too, have a dedicated giant play structure that include slides, swing pods and various pnaels for snesory play.

Address: 350 Bukit Batok Street 34, Singapore 650350

8. Jurong Central Park

Besides sporting a huge 8-hectare area for kids to run themselves silly, Jurong Central Park is the first park in Singapore to have life-sized board-game features in a park - Snakes and Ladders playground and Ludo Garden. The pavement around the playground area is marked with numbers and visitors can move around just like on an actual game board.

But how does one move on the boardgame without dice? The answer: use the dice tower built in the park which generates random die number for game play!

Rules for the Snakes and Ladders playground is just like its namesake board-game: landing on a ladder will see one climbing across the obstacle to reach a higher board space while landing on a snake will allow one to descend to a lower board space via a slide. It just could not get more fun than this - and a fantastic way to bundle boardgame fun with physical activity!

9. Alexandra Linear Park

How often can one find FIVE playgrounds along a stretch of ONE park? The Alexandra Canal Linear Park is one of the most unique parks in Singapore, thanks to it being built on top of a covered canal. It starts from Queenstown MRT Station, passing by Strathmore Estate all the way to Tanglin Road.

And if that sounds like an awfully long distance to bring your kids, it actually isn't - it is only a 1.4km stretch, which is easily doable for a nice stroll.

Comprising of 5 playgrounds - a Rope Bridge Playground included - the park also hides the bonus of a Water Terrace and Skate Park!

Although some of the 5 playgrounds along the park are the usual playgrounds that one can find near most HDB estates but put them collectively together, these band of 5 serve as a good incentive to bring your kids on a morning's worth of leisure stroll and get some exercise going for the family.

Address: Parallel to Strathmore Avenue (Block 83)

10. J Link Children's Playground

Situated just behind J Cube, the J Link pedestrian mall that provides a seamless pedestrian connection from Jurong Gateway where the Jurong East MRT Station is located to the Lakeside area where the current Science Centre is.

And part of that space includes a unique children’s playground which provides kids with a place to play and explore. The playground design also complements the rolling landscape of J Link.

Even though the play area may be smaller than the usual playgrounds, there are ample play points such as tunnels, ropes, climbing nets and a slide to occupy the younger kids.

Address: J Link, 134 Jurong Gateway Road Singapore 600134

11. Keat Hong Quad (Choa Chu Kang)

Sembawang has the Battleship play structure and now, Choa Chu Kang has its own Tank play structure. I can already foresee plenty of kids clambering on the tank to play!

Internally, the tank has rope nettings within to encourage even more climbing and scurrying, something which I think kids will never say no to.

Oh, and it also has a Vertical Playground too!

This Vertical Playground looks entirely different from the rest of the other public ones. While the rest are encased in see-through grills, this new playground is covered with grey metal meshing and sports a colour different from the usual orange.

The playground also has a swing netting, as well as a play area for younger children.

Address: 815C Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1, Singapore 683815

12. Keat Hong Mirage

Sandwiched between Blocks 818B and 818C at Choa Chu Kang Ave 1 (Keat Hong Mirage), the most eye-catching play structure is undoubtedly the bright green army truck.

Much like the Crooked Houses playground in Yishun, the structure is designed by MONSTRUM, a danish company famed for reinventing the notion of kids' playgrounds through artistic and design-related thematic areas that fascinates and inspires both kids and adults. Kids will be able to clamber onto the truck and get into the driver's seat or scamper to the back of the truck where a green slide awaits.

Of course, the other highlight at the playground is the lookout tower which pays homage to the military lookout posts of yesteryear. Kids will be able to climb up via the rope ladder or rock wall, and whizz themselves down the fireman pole. It is pretty high though, so a huge dose of adrenaline rush is guaranteed.

Address: 818B & 818C Choa Chu Kang Avenue 1, Singapore 683818

13. Keat Hong Woods

Compared to the other more unique playgrounds in this list, the playground at Keat Hong Woods may come across as pretty normal-looking. However, if you have kids who cannot seem to get enough of climbing hihg and low, then the elongated play structure will certainly have them excited... especially when there's also a climbing net dome right beside!

Located about 50m away is another playground which is suited for younger kids.

Address: Keat Hong Woods, Behind Block 803C Keat Hong Close, Singapore 682803

14. Zhenghua Nature Park

Address: Bangkit Road Entrance, Behind Block 248 Bangkit Road

15. Bt Batok East East Playgrounds

The newest outdoor playgrounds to open in this list, the Play Tower at Block 283 Bukit Batok East Ave 3 boasts a splendid climbing design where kids have to climb up through a tower via a spiral netting at one end of the structure. After crawling through a slanted wooden bridge and navigating through a series of platforms and climbing ropes, the slide awaits.

If you have extra time to spare, take a short stroll to Block 266 at Bt Batok East Ave 4 where kids will be able to play on the newest Vertical Playground to open in Singapore!

16. Firefly Park

Surrounded by five thematic gardens, Firefly Park at Clementi Ave 4 consists of two playgrounds for toddlers aged two to five years old and kids aged six to 12 years old.

The play structure has a tall slide, complete with a high walkway which children will relish in climbing up. Add a cool obstacle course and mini rock climbing wall to the mix and the kids will pretty much play themselves silly. Oh and do I spy a set of old-school swings too?

Address: 304 Clementi Ave 4, Singapore 120304

17. Pavilion Park Playground

Tucked away in a quiet corner off Pavilion Circle, the quaint Pavilion Park features a terrace playground with two embankment slides, climbing arches and swinging saddles.

The steps on one of the terraces is deliberately made thinner to allow younger kids to climb more easily. The other terrace consists of 'thicker' levels to up the challenge.

Address: Pavilion Park, 19 Pavilion Circle, Singapore 658489

18. Kinetic Garden
NOTE: From now til further notice, Kinetic Garden is only open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays every week.

Granted this isn't your typical outdoor playground but consider the Kinetic Garden a science playground that makes learning fun! That's because it is a great free place to spend an hour or two exploring and enjoying the many educational structures which demonstrates certain scientific priciples and phenomena. Not only is the Garden expansive and filled with plenty of hands-on structures, there are clear signs describing each of their functions.

Kids can discover the inter-relationships between the different forms of energy and much more through interactive and interesting exhibits like the Magic Swing, a Sundial and a Lithophone.

Address: Entrance to Science Centre Singapore, 15 Science Centre Rd, Singapore 609081
Opening Hours: 10am – 5pm daily (Closed between 1pm and 2pm for disinfection)

19. Jem Shopping Mall Dry & Wet Playground
NOTE: The playground is currently closed due to Covid-19

The playground Jem Shopping Mall at Jurong East Central has re-opened after upgrading works. And even better news, it looks much MORE fun than the previous version!

Inspired by honeycombs, the sheltered outdoor playground is located on Level 5 and just outside of the foodcourt. Taking centrestage is the huge web canopy, where kids can climb to their hearts' content.

There is also an amazing water play area. Just hit the switch and watch streams of water cascade down into a mini pool!

This has got to be one of the more orginal playground designs that I have seen - a playground that combines both dry and wet play elements into one play structure.

Address: Jem Shopping Mall Playground, 50 Jurong Gateway Road, Singapore 608549, Level 5 (Beside the foodcourt)

20. Westgate Wonderland
NOTE: The playground is currently closed due to Covid-19

Adopting a Fantasy Garden Theme, Westgate Wonderland is Singapore’s largest thematic outdoor playground featuring three zones - one dry play area each for those aged below 5 years and for older children, and a wet play area for all.

Flowers that respond to touch with musical sounds and lights are just but one of the many interactive elements found in the playground. Older kids can scale a 10-metre high tree house and come whizzing down via a meandering tube slide. At the heart of the water play area, a large watering can with an active spray nozzle towers over the children, making all them drenched and deliriously happy. Mini water fountains are also planted all around, increasing the splashing fun factor.

The magical surroundings come alive at night with special lighting and sound effects. That, and the presence of a Changing Room located just beside the wet area is music to parents’ ears too.

Address: 3 Gateway Drive, #04-00, Westgate, Singapore 608532
Opening hours: 10am – 10pm daily
