Telunas Private Island Revisted: What Has Remained the Same and Changed

Two years ago, we first stepped on the beautiful private island that Telunas Resorts is home to and we have been yearning to go back ever since. Because with private villas built over stunning turquoise waters, who wouldn't want to?

If you have not read my previous two articles on Telunas Resorts - Introduction and 20 Fun Activities to do - go on and click on the links to read them first. I'll be here waiting.

Done? Good.

Telunas Resorts consists of 2 accommodation types - Telunas Beach and Telunas Private Island - both of which are a 5-minute boat ride away from one another. Telunas Beach Resort on Sugi Island offers the more economical option, with three choices of rooms set on stilts over the sea.

But if you are seeking a private island escapade. then Telunas Private Island offers just that little bit extra of paradise, something that all of us were excited to experience all over again.

Getting to Telunas takes a fair bit of travelling though - approximately 2.5 hours by sea. We started with a 1-hour ferry ride from Harbourfront to Sekupang in Batam, and followed up with an another 1.5-hour journey from the local pier at Sekupang to Telunas Resorts via a wooden long boat.

But trust me when I say that the journey will all be worth it.

In terms of when to go, the clearest waters occur between November and April, but May through October usually bring less rain. So no matter what time of year you decide to visit, there is always an upside!

Telunas Private Island offers 15 beautiful over-water sea villas that can accommodate couples and families. And for the monkies, staying in one of them certainly ranks as one of their fave moments of our 2-night getaway.

In fact, there are a lot of things about Telunas Private Island that has remained the same since our visit two years ago - things that all of us love and miss.

WHAT HAS REMAINED THE SAME

The stunning sea villas

Each sea villa includes a sitting room, private balcony, king size bed, and a children’s loft that can sleep up to 3 kids.

Furnished with upcycled wooden furniture, the villas are spacious and beautifully decorated. A hot and cold water dispenser is provided in each room as well, which negates the need for plastic bottles.

The main advantage of staying in a sea villa is the presence of a private balcony which offers a breathtaking unblocked view of the sea.

And since the villas are over the water, there is no need for air-conditioning. The lack of air conditioning is made up for by the constant sea breeze (and a powerful ceiling fan!) and even for this repeat stay, I STILL had to snuggle beneath the blanket come bedtime!

The sheer number of activities for families

Part of Telunas Private Island's appeal is there is no lack of activities to keep everyone occupied. In fact, there was so much stuff for the monkies to do that we hardly had time to chillax in our villa. But I guess that is a good problem to have because it is always great to spend time outdoors, no?

There will be at least one main activity that will be organised for guests every day, from visiting a nearby village to jungle trekking and river kayaking. In addition, activities are planned for the kiddos but more on that later.

Dipping in the sea

Enough said.

Splashing in the infinity pool

After a day at the beach, the freshwater infinity pool at Telunas Private Island was just the perfect complement for us to enjoy some swimming or lounge blissfully by the water's edge.

Kayaking & Stand-up Paddle Boarding

Kayaks and Paddle Boards available for rent at Telunas Private Island, and they are free to use for all Private Island guests!

The gorgeous sunrise and sunset views

One of the beautiful sights - or make that two - that Telunas Resorts did NOT create is the spectacular sunsets and sunrises. The monkies made it a point to wake up early to catch the sunrise from our balcony, while sunset views are best caught from the beach front.

Lazing by the beach

If you love to just do absolutely nothing by the beach, head over to the one at Telunas Beach Resort where the waves are gentles, the sand is smoother and the seabed is free of rocks and corals. Telunas Beach Resort is directly opposite Telunas Private Island and is a short 5-minute boat ride away. There are free shuttle boat services plying between the two resorts daily.

Fishing from our private balcony

Ah yes, the one activity that the boys have been looking forward to ever since they knew we were visiting Telunas once more. This was traditional fishing at its rustic best with only a spool of fishing line and hook, and the boys showed that they still had it in them by catching more than 10 fishes during our stay!

Which brings me to my next point.

Campfire

On certain nights, resort staff will light up a huge camp fire near the beach. Resort guests will be able to huddle around and more importantly, roast marshmallows!

This time around, the monkies upped the ante by bringing along the fishes that they caught and barbecued them right over the fire! Definitely a first for them.

Jumping off the dock

Launching oneself into the open sea from the dock at Telunas Private Island is apparently the boys' fave activity of the lot.

And frankly, I stopped counting after they hit the water ten times.

Yes, these are most definitely not your usual jump shots. Who knew that jumping off the dock can be so so so addictive?

The yummy food

Staying at Telunas Private Island come with full board meals, with dishes written on a chalkboard daily. Breakfast offered usually the same choices every day, there is usually only one choice for lunch while we could pick from local or Western dishes for our main course come dinner time.

For kids, there is also the Kids Menu to choose from which comes with the usual suspects - Fish & Chips, Chick & Chips, Spaghetti with either tomato or cream sauces.

It would have been perfectly fine if Telunas Private Island remained the same as our first visit but no, it had to go add on new activities and stuff to make our visit more memorable... and in the process, ensure that we will miss it even more by the time we leave.

WHAT HAS BEEN ADDED

A new bar

A new bar area which serves cocktails and mocktails has been set up under the main building, and it makes for a fantastic way to chill the afternoon away minus the kids.

Kampung Kids

And this is the reason why parents will be able to enjoy sipping their cocktails at the bar.

Parents will be able to drop off the kids at this newly set up Kids Club where the little ones will be kept occupied with plenty of activities. There are toys and arts & craft sessions but probably the best part about it is the fact that it is deliberately kept rustic, which is in line with the resort's theme.

More than half of the area is filled with sand and kids are encouraged to play freely under the watchful eyes of the facilitators. And yes, it is free for all guests' kids.

But joining in the Kids Club does not mean being confined to the four walls. In fact, many of its activities take place outside, like creating a beautiful bottle made up of colourful sand.

We parents even had the opportunity to join in during one of its activities, where we went hermit crab hunting... in the dark, no less!

Armed with torchlights and buckets, we were brought to a section of the beach by the facilitators where there were hermit crabs galore!

And this was our loot for the day. Not shabby at all, eh?

Personalized Massages

For an additional charge, guests can also take the opportunity to release stress and muscle tensions in the privacy of their own sea villas through various pampering massage options.

More food options

During our previous visit, lunch time only consists of one main course and dessert. This time around, a modest salad bar has been added for lunch sessions. For breakfast, on top of the mini buffet spread of cereals, juices, yoghurt, fruits and pastries that we had last time, an egg station and buffet selection of pancakes and hashbrowns are included as well.

For all the new things that have been added to Telunas Private Island, one thing has NOT changed.

There is NO air-conditioning, or TV or even WiFi.

But guess what, the monkies still declare the resort as one of the best resorts that they have ever stayed... and they would head back once again in a heartbeat.

Ditto for me.

Because if there is one thing that I learnt during our time at Telunas Private Island, it is taking time to find joy in nature’s simple treasures can be equally enriching.

Games that Families can Play Anywhere... Together with an Indulgent Treat

$

Advertorial

Spending family time together need not necessarily mean having to head outdoors. Playing simple games together - whether it's at home, during a long ride in the car (or bus) or waiting for the food to arrive in a restaurant - sure beats yanking out that electronic device.

But when you have a family of all ages, what are the games that you can play that will engage the oldest and the youngest, the enthusiastic and the not so enthusiastic? Here are some suggestions as all of these are super simple so players of all ages can learn quickly.

1. Drawing Game

Start a drawing game. One person starts by drawing a shape on a piece of paper and passing it to the next player, who adds to it. Keeping passing around the drawing until everyone has a turn, or for a predetermined number of times. See how outrageous the drawing can turn out in the end.

2. The ABC Game

Pick a topic like cartoons, movies, animals, food, etc. First person starts by choosing a word that begins with 'A' in the selected category. The next person continues by selecting a word that begins with 'B' in the same category and so on. The game keeps going until you get to the end of the alphabet. Want to make it even more challenging? Have each person remember everything the person before had said and add on their chosen word in the alphabetical order. Whoever fails to remember all the words will be out of the game.

3. Memory Game

Play a game that trains the memory! Place an assortment of items on the table or floor. Everyone tries to memorize the items. Everyone closes their eyes then one person removes a few items and players try to guess what was removed.

4. Let’s Tell a Story

This should be nothing new but it is definitely a great way to pass the time. One person gets the ball rolling by making up the beginning of a story. The next person picks up and starts adding to the story. With kids, you can be sure that the story is bound to get sillier and sillier but that's the beauty of it, no? Not to mention it might just aid in the kids having to think creatively!

5. The Telephone Game

This game is ideally played with a larger group of kids. Whisper a fairly long phrase into the ear of the first child and have he/she then whisper what the exact phrase into the next person’s ear. Have the last person in the chain to say the phrase aloud and see how much of it has changed! Cue giggles and laughter all around.

And if spending time with your kids is precious, why not make it a whole lot sweeter with the occasional Kinder Shoko Bons Crispy?

The monkies are no strangers to Kinder, thanks to the Kinder Joy Surprise Eggs that they receive as a treat from the grandparents. Now, Kinder has launched the bite-sized Kinder Shoko Bons Crispy which as you can tell, the monkies are dying to snatch it off me!

Oval-shaped just like a mini egg. each treat is the size of a candy, and with its individually and innovative package ensuring perfect hygiene and convenience. And opening it is easy enough - just pull the tab.

Give the tab a quick turn around.

And there you have it. YUMS!

Each treat has delicious milky and cocoa filling inside a crunchy milk chocolate coated wafer biscuit covered with tasty cocoa sprinkles. Pop the entire thing in your mouth, and the two delicious milky and cocoa creams instantly explodes in the mouth. It is pretty hard to imagine just reading so you really have to try it for yourself!

As for the monkies' verdict, they simply cannot just stop at one! The Kinder chocolate is sweet but not on the verge of being too sugary sweet. The chocolate worked very well with the milky filling, which makes the flavour and texture of each Schoko Bon that little smoother.

Kinder Schoko Bons Crispy is a unique treat that appeals to the entire family. The different pack sizes make it ideal to share it with loved ones and create moments of togetherness.

So yes, a great indulgent treat for the kids and they come highly recommended by the monkies!

Kinder Shoko Bons Crispy now available at all major retailers.

Decathlon Opens in the West & it's the Biggest Store yet!

Sports lovers who live in the West, rejoice. Now you do not have to travel all the way to Bedok to shop at Decathlon... because the French sporting goods retailer is opening a brand new outlet at Fairprice Hub in Joo Koon on 13 May 2017. And this store will be its largest megastore in Singapore yet!

In case you don't know, Decathlon is like the sports version of IKEA as it is well-known for its affordable prices and mega stores which encourages customers to try out its products before purchase. Like these colourful bags which only cost $3.90!

Decathlon keeps its prices low by developing all of its products in-house. In fact, it owns about 25 brands with its products researched and developed by their own teams. Each brand represents a different sport or group of sports, with a dedicated product development and design team.

And the items are guaranteed to be 20% to 40% cheaper than those at other sports retailers,

And when it comes to Decathlon, the monkies simply love shopping there... even if we usually do not intend to buy anything (but we almost always end up buying something)! They love walking down the aisles and aisles of sporting products but most importantly, they enjoy trying out the various sporting equipment on display.

And now, Decathlon's newest outlet in Joo Koon has upped the ante by occupying a massive 4,000 square meters area - the outlet in Bedok spans 3,300 square meters. More space for the monkies to explore then!

Other than the fact that the store will carry over 100,000 items for over 60 sports, the new store includes 10 experience zones - some of which are absent in the other 2 stores in Bedok and City Square Mall.

Besides an area for customers to try out the roller blades & scooters, a mini football and basketball arena, you will be able to try your hand at golf putting at the mini green.

Also, which kid can resist a good game of table tennis?

A totally new experience zone is the slack line area, which caters to a new and growing sport group. Planning to buy climbing shoes? You can test them out at the mini climbing pyramids first to get a sens of the grip.

If running is more your thing, you get to test out running shoes on a running track with 2 different surfaces!

The e-commerce aspect of Decathlon will also be integrated at its Joo Koon outlet. Come June, a new website will be launched and shoppers will be able to order items online and have them delivered on the same day within SIX hours. Amazing!

Looks like I have a new place to bring the monkies!

It's a World of Creativity & Imagination at Playeum's New 'Making It Home' Exhibition

EXCLUSIVE Media Invite

During the past 1.5 years, Playeum had introduced the world of imaginative play to kids - we had an installation where kids got to experiment with speed, another one where kids engaged with nature and also one where the little ones got to create their own stories.

Now, Playeum has come up with yet another hands-on exhibition and judging from all the fun that the monkies had during an exclusive sneak preview, I dare say this may be its best one yet.

Located at Gillman Barracks, Playeum is a museum without walls which hopes to inspire children through self-directed exploration and learning and in the process, establish a culture of meaningful and impactful play.

Which is exactly what 'Making It Home' wants to achieve.

The new exhibition opens its doors from 16 May to 29 October 2017 and it is all about dreaming rooms, making spaces and creating places. Kids (and parents) will be able to experience the home as a place where many ordinary materials can have multiple purposes and support imagination, innovation and sustainability.

Interestingly, the spaces within the indoor playground - if you can call Playeum that - have been transformed into different ‘rooms’, each with a different purpose with different opportunities for the kids to explore, experiment and redefine. Whether it is imagining colours, materials and designs for floors walls and ceilings, to conjuring up art works with sand or recyclable materials, kids can stretch their creativity and imagination to the limit!

In all, 'Making It Home' has been divided into different sections, which resemble the different parts of a home:

The Central Space

Here, it is all about creating connections - thanks to a buffet of PVC pipes, tubes and connectors. This creative installation offers kids the chance to encounter the versatility of drain pipes and bring their personal ideas to make installations that can create connections.

And from some of the creations the monkies came up with, I can safely say they had loads of fun!

One extremely innovative installation is this memory game which makes use of sewage covers. Kids will have to flip open the covers to find the corresponding matches for the images.

Forget the matching, flipping the covers open and closing them is more fun I say!

The Bedroom

The bedroom has for a long time been a space and hideaway in which dreams and emotions are acted out. Inspired by dreams of their own, children will get to use textiles and more to transform themselves and engage in make-believe play.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is a space for touch, smell and experimentation! Children will use a variety of materials such has magnets, sand and kitchen instruments to engage and focus on sensory play.

Similar to how a kitchen is place where ideas for dishes are envisioned, this area challenges kids to come up with their own play ideas through a series of installations.

A steel table with strip and round magnets encourages the kids to come out with their own innovative games...

... while a wooden tub filled with sand allows kids to construct a network of pipes in order to create a seamless network to allow the sand to flow through.

And because kids simply love playing with sand, I reckon they will find it hard to resist trying their hands at dabbling in some sand art drawing.

Ayd spent the longest time at this installation!

The Laundry Room

The unique thing about this 'Making It Home' exhibition is a group of kids actually acted as consultants for the exhibition! Their views and ideas were sought on what elements they thought made up a home and in fact, the drawing below was initially sketched by one of the kids and replicated in the exhibition.

At our homes, the laundry room is a place where different types of textiles are gathered. In this space, kids can explore the world of laundry and cloth through weaving, printing and peg-play. They can watch their textile creations flow as they are hung from a laundry pole.

Large PVC pipes are also present and they represent the washing machines that we have at home. Here, kids will be able to load the 'washing machines' with fabric.

The Future Living Room

Known as a communal space where multiple generations come together at home, talking and relaxing, the ‘Future Living Room’ invites children to think and play with movable cubes, explore upholstery with textiles, and build with different blocks to show their own ideas of how a ‘chair of the future’ could look. They can even create their own images on a futuristic television!

The Storey Room

Otherwise known as the store room, this is no bomb shelter. Unlike the usual store room which tends to be dim and filled with items, this room is known as the 'story room' instead where kids will be able to create a din with everyday utensils and create their own stories using shadows and coloured lighting.

The Garden

What's a home without some greenery? Playeum’s geodesic dome has been transformed into a multi-layered garden that provides shade and food. The garden will grow local and western herbs, and solar powered lights will even light up the dome at night!

The Playmaking Space

For the past 3 exhibitions, this has all along been the monkies favourite space in Playeum especially Ash's. The reason? The shelves are well-stocked with a mind-boggling selection of upcycled materials like plastic bottles, paper rolls, wires, and strings.

This time around, quirky pulleys with buckets have been added to the space. The buckets are filled with art materials so trust me when I say the kids will thoroughly enjoy pulling down the buckets to obtain their art resources. A bit like the good old Milo tin that the provision stores used to have, no?

Through the materials, kids can explore and express their thoughts through tinkering and come up with creations that can be placed in their own home.

The amazing thing about Playeum is it unreservedly invites kids of all ages to enjoy and play with ideas within the freedom of the space. Not only does 'Making It Home' feed their imaginations with everyday household items that can be found at our own homes, the exhibition also inspires and encourages them to create their own spaces.

Here are a few things to note if you planning a trip down:

1. Entry to Children's Centre for Creativity is $22 per child (1-12 years old). One accompanying adult enters free while additional accompanying adults play $10 each.

2. Although entry is for unlimited play for the day, there is a possibility that visits may be kept to 2-hours during busy periods.

3. Annual Memberships available at $160 per child, which offers one year's worth of unlimited entry for one child and one adult. This also includes a 10% discount on workshops and 20% discount for additional adult price.

4. There are no toilets and nursing rooms within centre. Toilets are however, located just beside once you exit the Playeum building.

5. No snacks and drinks are sold on premises. There is a cold drinks vending machine beside the washrooms.

6. If your kids (or you) are feeling really famished, head to Red Baron cafe opposite Playeum. It sells sandwiches, cakes and other pastries.

Connected City Living for Families at Sims Urban Oasis

Advertorial

What makes a home a HOME?

Is it the aroma of home-cooked food that permeates through the entire dwelling? Or is it the chatter that the kids generate? Is it the convenience of popping downstairs for a quick meal and a grocery run, knowing that stores are well within walking distance? Or is it the easy access to recreational activities so that the kids can be kept occupied come weekends? Or simply put, is it the people who you share the home with?

Truth is, it is everything of the above.

A place to stay provides a roof over your head, but a home is where you are able to seek shelter and weather all of life's little storms - together with the warmth only a family can provide.

And if you are looking for a new spacious home to house your family and enjoy the benefits of city fringe living, Sims Urban Oasis (SUO) is highly worth a look.

SUO is a thoughtfully-designed 99-year leasehold private located at the junction of Sims Drive and Aljunied Road.

Upon completion, a total of 1,024 units will cater various apartment types for varied homeowners and their diverse lifestyles. Here are 4 unique benefits one can enjoy at SUO:

1. Well-designed with a variety of facilities

Living in a condominium often brings convenience and comfort in the form of facilities and at Sims Urban Oasis, I think all families will be spoilt for choice! There are a whopping total of 9 zones, with each zone catering for a specific lifestyle. In need of some relaxation and rest? Head to the OASIS zone for its Bubble Jet and Aqua Bed facilities. Want to spend bonding time with the kids? The FAMILY zone which consists of the BBQ Pavilion, Children’s play and wading pool is where the action is at. Working at your fitness? Sprint over to the WELLNESS zone where you can find the Tennis Court and 2 Olympic-length pools. Parents can even sign up their kids for Tennis and Swimming lessons!

And just for that added convenience, the condominium will also be home to six retail shops and a childcare centre - great for parents who will be sending and fetching their kids from school.

Lawn and Olympic-length Pool at Sims Urban Oasis
During my visit to the Sims Urban Oasis site, I managed to catch a glimpse of the completed children’s pool playground and the surroundings sure look almost ready for occupancy to me!

Children’s Play Pool and Wading Pool

2. Thoughtfully-designed layout for families

The great thing about SUO is that it is designed consciously for the adaptation of all lifestyles. Large multi-generation families that require a spacious setting can opt for the dual-key or 4/5bedroom units, whereas the younger families can choose 3 bedroom units with a cosier layout.

I was also able to view the 4-bedroom in-situ show flat while I was there and the first thing that struck me when I entered was its spaciousness compared to other properties that I had viewed in the past.

For me, the best utilisation of space is when I am able to see almost everything - from the dining area to the living room - at one glance from the main door. No long corridors or awkward angled walls, thank you very much.

Balcony space is rather generous too so if you have kids, it will make for a cosy reading or play corner... especially if they have friends over!

The kitchen comes with a solid surface worktop and is equipped with a fridge, a washer and a built-in oven/cooker hood. The dining area is also well-positioned - food from the oven goes straight to the table! With the extra island at the dry kitchen area, you get more space to whip up that special meal when guest come over to visit.

One unique aspect about SUO is that units do not come with a bomb shelter, or in Singapore's context, a storeroom.

Instead, the space saved is cleverly channelled into the creation of an additional small room which you can use it as a laundry/ironing room, study room or even a room for the domestic helper.

The Master Bedroom is pretty spacious, given that bedrooms in new condominium launches nowadays are relatively small. A King-sized bed can fit into the room with ease.

Other bedrooms within the development are of a standard size and can fit a queen-sized bed. The unit also has a higher ceiling compared to normal apartments and if you have kids, you can install a loft bed, making more space for work and play at the bottom. Moreover, loft beds are always be a hit with the kids. Just ask Ale!

Oh and there is an important point to note, all of SUO units are free of bay windows.

If you are gunning for the 4 or 5 bedroom units, 2 of the bedrooms also come with en suite bathroom for greater convenience and privacy if your kids are approaching teen hood.

And speaking of bathrooms, can I just say that the bathrooms are extremely spacious and come nicely designed?

I sneaked a peek into the 3-bedroom in-situ show flat as well, and I would say the unit will be highly suitable for expanding families.

3. Location, location, location

For all the amenities and space that SUO provides, all of it will count for nothing if it is located in an ulu (or remote) part of Singapore. Fortunately, the property is located at the city-fringe, only a 5-minute walk to Aljunied MRT station with 1 MRT stop to Paya Lebar, 3 stops to Bugis and 5 stops to Raffles Place. That's how close it is to the city centre!

Its connectivity is enhanced with links to major expressways like the PIE, KPE and ECP, and major roads such as Sims Ave, Paya Lebar Road and Changi Road. Even Changi Airport - which has chockful of free activities for kids -  is only a 15-minute drive away.

4. Amenities & Convenience all around

Feeling hungry? Indulge in delicious and affordable hawker food near renowned hawker centres like Sims Vista Market and Old Airport Road Food Centre.

After viewing the showflats, we took the chance to visit some of the hipster cafes that have sprouted around the neighbourhood. We decided to have our lunch at Builders @ Sims, which was nestled under a block of flats at Sims Drive.

Food was surprisingly affordable for a cafe... and the Wagyu Burger and Carbonara were a hit with us!

For families with kids, you will be glad to know that SUO is close to quality educational institutions like Geylang Methodist Primary, Etonhouse International, James Cook University and the upcoming Nexus International School. Book lovers can also frequent the Geylang East Library which is located a walk-able 600 metres away. If you love a wider variety, the National Library is also easily accessible from Bugis MRT station (3 MRT stops away).

When it comes to recreational activities, Singapore Sports Hub and Kallang Riverside Park is only an 8-minute cycle away. Even malls like Kallang Wave Mall, OneKM Mall and Kallang Leisure Park are close by too. The latter houses an indoor ice skating rink in the form of Kallang Ice World, which Ale was excited to visit.

And what the princess wants, the princess gets. LOL.

If your family size is growing and looking for an upgrade, SUO may just be that perfect home that you are looking for... thanks to its unique selling points:

- Availability of thoughtfully-designed 5-bedroom or dual-key units for large families.
- A variety of facilities to choose from, specially catered not just for children but also for the adults.
- Units are designed to make good use of the space. Layouts are not as cramped or weird compared to some other developments which come with odd little corners.
- Excellent location at the fringe of the city with the CBD, Marina Financial District, Orchard Road and Kallang Sports Hub are all within a drive time of 15 minutes or less.
- A 5-minute walk to Aljunied MRT station.
-  Choice of primary schools within 1-km of the site - Canossa Convent Primary, Macpherson Primary and Geylang Methodist Primary.
- Near to numerous amenities, including F&B offerings, market and shopping malls.

As the first prime private residential development in the Sims Drive area, SUO is poised to rejuvenate a charming and accessible location of Singapore. With well-designed homes and quality amenities, living at SUO will make going to work, school or anywhere a breeze – convenience everyone in the family can enjoy every day.

Let 'Em Play: Singapore's First Indoor Obstacle Course & Augmented Reality Climbing

With Clip 'n Climb and Forest Adventure situated in Tampines and Bedok respectively, it seems that the East has all the fun. Not anymore though, as the West is now home to a brand new family-centric edutainment hub which combines both the fun of wall-climbing AND high elements obstacle course.

And after our first visit, the monkies loved it!

Located at Tradehub21 (near International Business Park and The Chevrons in Jurong), Let 'Em Play may seem to be in the unlikeliest location for an indoor playground among car workshops and other offices.

But once we stepped inside, the monkies could not wait to get strapped up and scale up the colourful walls!

There are a total of 5 different types of climbing walls, each with varying difficulty. The Giraffe climbing wall is probably the toughest of the lot as there are lesser areas to grip as one scales up its neck!

The boys though, preferred the Speed Climb wall where they got to compete to scale up the red walls side by side to see who can reach the top in the fastest time possible. Or for the even more ultra-competitive, there is the Transparent Climb where two climbers will be able to climb simultaneously on each side of the transparent wall and see who gets to the top first.

The other slightly more challenging climb comes in the form of the Let 'Em Play wall which lets climbers attempt to reach the top by manoeuvring around the letters. A rather unique climbing experience, and all three monkies managed to conquer it!

If your kids (or even you) have dreamed of scaling a tree, they are in luck. With the Tree Climb, they will be able to do just that. Granted it may not be a real tree, but at least all the safety measures are in place for the climb.

Speaking of safety measures, all of the walls use a belay system. The Speed Climb walls use automatic self-belay system, which means that climbers don’t need a ground partner in order to start climbing. Once you reach the top, you just have to let go of the wall and enjoy the free-fall.

As for the other walls, someone needs to be present at the bottom to ensure that the belay rope remains taut and is slowly released when the climber starts to descend. While this may sound troublesome, it actually offers a great opportunity for parent and child to complete the climbing activity together. Also from what I observed, there is always ample staff around to help and offer advice.

If the kids are tired of scaling walls, how about conquering a 2-level high elements obstacle course instead?

Billed as the FIRST and ONLY indoor High Elements Obstacle Course in Singapore, this course features over 15 different obstacles - and all in air-conditioned comfort!

The monkies certainly needed no invitation to test their concentration and balancing skills as they gamly traversed through the different suspension bridges, ropes, and logs.

The second level of obstacles are slightly more challenging while the first level are more suited for younger kids. But from the time as I was there, all of the younger kids were raring to head up to the second level after completing the easier obstacles!

The course is suitable for both adults and children as young as 3 or 4 years old (accompanied by parents). Kids who are over 6 years of age can go on the course on their own.

Let 'Em Play utilises a safe continuous belay system where participants will only attach and detach the safety harness at the beginning and at the end of the course. While clearing the obstacles, participants will not be required to change their safety line or unhook from their safety harness.

The belay system also allows participants to choose their obstacle path at various checkpoints, so that there is minimal bottleneck at the individual obstacles. For younger kids, the safety line has an adjustable length so as to suit participants of all heights.

Kids who wish to take a breather from all the climbing and scaling can seek refuge in Tree House and Water Drop Nets in the centre of the obstacle course.

But the REAL highlight at Let ’Em Play is Singapore’s FIRST Augmented Reality Rock Climbing Wall.

Currently one of the hottest trends around the world, Augmented Reality (AR) Climbing is the world’s first global gaming platform for climbing walls which projects graphics onto a climbing wall and paired with proprietary body tracking to create a variety of interactive games. Just like how the monkies were tasked to climb the wall in order to smash a bat.

Suitable for any age (as long as you can climb the wall!), the AR wall features different varieties of games which can be customised according to various skill levels. (Do note that this activity requires a top-up of $12 per adult and $10 per child on top of the normal admission charge)

That means parent and child can play a game of ping-pong while climbing a wall! Or challenge on another to hit as many bats as possible, or climb a set route in the quickest possible time too! Be warned though, it is NOT as easy as it looks.

Here's a snippet of Ale in action!

From climbing walls and an indoor high elements obstacle course, to augmented reality climbing, Let 'Em Play edutainment hub definitely has enough physical (and mental) challenges for the whole family. Just ask the monkies, who were all too reluctant to leave!

Fun Activities Not to be Missed at Army Open House 2017

The last Army Open House (AOH) was held at F1 Pit Building 5 years ago and come this 27/28 May 2017 weekend, it makes a rousing return - bigger and better than before!

Army Open House 2017 promises to be a fun and immersive showcase of the latest military vehicles, weaponry, action-packed activities... including a heartfelt tribute to 50 years of National Service, in recognition of those who have served National Service over the years.

In fact, the organisers have intentionally made it accessible to everyone from all walks of life - whether you are a toddler, teen, young working adult, parent or senior citizen. And trust me when I say the entire area that AOH covers is HUGE with both outdoor and air-conditioned (phew!) areas.

Here are the happening stuff that you can expect at AOH 2017:

Army Platforms Display

Located right in front of the F1 Pit Building is a long stretch of military vehicles on display.

Featuring the Singapore Army's latest gadgets, weapon systems and of course all the fighting machines that kids (and adults) love, this is the perennial favourite for many to go trigger-happy with the camera.

As an added bonus, most of the vehicles at the Static Display also allow the public to climb onboard for a closer look. Kids will love the experience, especially when they get to sit in the cockpit of this Apache attack helicopter!

Battlefield Zone

Boasting a firing range and urban course, this is where the public can get hands-on with military weapons such as firing the SAR21 rifle or the anti-armour system Matador. There is no clear-cut minimum age, but kids generally have to be able to lift the weapon as a prerequisite.

Battle Rides

Okay, this will definitely be one of the hottest activity of AOH 2017 as the public will be able to hop on six types of warfighting vehicles.

There will be four land vehicles to choose from, the Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicle, Bronco ATTC, Light Strike Vehicle and Peacekeeper Protected Response Vehicle (below photo).

Water rides include the Light Amphibious Resupply Cargo vehicle (LARC V) and the M3G, a self-propelled military raft utilised by the Singapore Army’s Combat Engineers.

I got a chance sail down the waters of Marina Bay on the M3G military raft, and I can imagine how much this will thrill the kids!

At the previous AOH, queues for the military vehicles got unbearably long so for this year's edition, visitors will just need to head to the Battles Rides Registration tent to register for a ride of their choice at a selected timing. Then they will have to make their way to the chosen ride at that timing - much like Disneyland's Fastpass.

The Battle Rides have a minimum height of 1.2m, and covered shoes are a MUST when going for the rides.

Soldier Strong Obstacle Course

For the first time, there will be a obstacle course which requires participants to clear 7 obstacles. The beauty of the obstacle course is it is suited for BOTH parent and child, with obstacles catering to adults and kids positioned side by side so that they will be able to clear them together.

First up, scale up the Low Wall... which will definitely bring back (painful?) memories of the old Standard Obstacle Course (SOC).

Next, do the Farmer's Walk where participants will be required to carry a 15kg or 20kg sandbag (6kg or 8kg for kids) to and from a distance of 10m.

Then, traverse from one end of the tyres to the opposite end, one after the other at the Tyre Hop.

The obstacle course then gets more physical with the Swing Bar, where participants must get across from one end to the other using the overhead bars. For kids, there is a lower swing bar.

Tyre Flip is next and as the name implies, adults get to flip a 3-tonner tyre for a distance of 10m. That's 101kg worth of tyre in case you are wondering.

Kids have it relatively easier - flipping a land-rover tyre.

Low Rope. The bane of my SOC while I was in the army eons ago, adults will have to climb up a 3.5m-high rope while kids have the luxury of going up a rope ladder.

The final obstacle will see parent and child pulling themselves up on an inclined Ramp and heading down the other side. Very fun!

Dynamic Defence Display Show

The highlight of AOH 2017, the show will take place at the seating stands area in front of the Flyer. The 30-minute show will be held twice each day during the weekend at 10am & 3pm on Saturday and 10am & 4pm on Sunday. Seating capacity is 3,000 and is at a first-come-first-served basis.

The show kicks off with a display by military dogs who are put through their paces by their handlers.

The adrenaline then pumps up a few notches after that, with a mighty display of the Army's armoured vehicles, such as the Terrex infantry carrier vehicle and the Leopard 2 armoured engineer vehicle.

A terror drill, simulating a bomb situation, will also be held during the show, involving the Special Operations Task Force for the first time. And if you are a fan of the Red Lions, be sure to look up into the sky at some point during the show too!

At 7.30pm on both days, there will also be a Central Band Performance which will showcase the SAF Central Band, MP Drill Squad and the SAF Music and Drama Company.

NS50 Showcase

To celebrate 50 years of National Service, an experiential exhibition where visitors can learn about the evolution of NS over the past 50 years, as well as achievements of our national servicemen in defending and safeguarding Singapore has been set up at the F1 Pit Building.

Other than the fact that it is entirely air-conditioned (yay!), the exhibition is one of the most interactive and immersive I have experienced. Consisting of three zones, visitors will be able to have plenty of photo opportunities like these 2 “trick art” installations of recruits doing log PT and recruits toss their jockey caps into the air after the Passing Out Parade.

While the first zone captures the spirit of Basic Military Training (BMT) over the years, the second zone zooms in on the operations and capabilities of the SAF and Home Team. Do check out the ultra-cool interactive table and dress up in virtual combat gear there!

Steady pom pi pi

The final zone is a place for pledges and self-reflection, which calls for all Singaporeans to renew the commitment to Singapore and National Service.

Oh, and see if you can spot our contribution too!

Kids Zone

Remember what I said about AOH 2017 being suitable for everyone, from the young to the pioneer? Fret not if you child is not able to go on the Battle Rides or try out the firing of the weapons due to height restrictions. Just head up to the second level of the F1 Pit Building for one designed specially for kids. Plus, it's all air-conditioned!

Here, kids will be able to dabble in Art & Craft activities, don kid-sized army uniforms, experience camouflage face painting, and even try a mini obstacle course! By the way, I think the low wall is super cute.

Can't hit the 1.2m height for Battle Rides? Younger kids can go on a kiddy version ride of their own here!

Other Activities on Level 2

Visitors can also try their hand at virtual war games in a room located just beside the Kids Zone.

If you are game enough, you can even try flying a drone indoors or use night vision goggles to navigate a darkened course at the Night Walk Zone.

So if you are planning to head down to AOH 2017 with the family this weekend, here are a few tips:

- AOH is open on 27 and 28 May from 9am to 8pm, admission is FREE.
- There is only ONE entry point and 3 exit points. The entrance is located just before the Singapore Flyer (bottom right in the map below).

- Food and drinks are sold onsite, in an huge air-conditioned tent.
- Toilets are available at the F1 Pit Building.

- For a chance to win exclusive AOH souvenirs, download the Army Open House 2017 mobile app via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Play an Army Hunt game where you can hunt for army vehicles scattered around AOH (like Pokemon Go) for a chance to redeem gifts! The app also provides news and contains a map of the various exhibits at Army Open House 2017.

- If you cannot make it to AOH 2017 this weekend, it will travel to the heartlands on a smaller scale at the following locations and dates: Punggol (open field beside Punggol MRT Station): 2 - 4 June 2017 (10am - 10pm) & Jurong East (open fields beside Jurong East MRT Station): 9 - 11 June 2017 (10am - 10pm).

Liese Blauné One-Touch Color is not your usual DIY hair dye kit

$

Advertorial

For some, finding a strand of white hair is enough to send them into a full-on panic. Eyes wide with terror, they decide for a full 5 minutes whether it should be plucked or allowed to stay. And then they start sobbing uncontrollably until they fall asleep.

Okay, so perhaps I exaggerate.

But I'm sure we all agree when I say having white hair is a serious matter... especially to me, since the number of white hairs have been multiplying ever since the monkies came along!

Okay... to the monkies' credit, they have been excellent white hair pluckers all these while. Hmmm, maybe the commission of 10c per strand of white hair helped but at least I could get rid of those dreaded white hairs.

Eventually though, there came to a point when I knew that the perpetual plucking of white hair isn't that effective. Simply because there was just TOO MUCH white hair!!! So I started to ignore them and learn to live with it.... until one fine day when Ale quipped, "Papa, how come you got so many white hair? Ma-ma (Grandma) also has a lot, you know? You mean you are as old as her?"

Oh man, that's it.

I toyed with the idea of heading to the hair salon to get my hair dyed but the treatment is not exactly cheap and I do not have the time (and patience) to sit through the entire process either.

Dying my hair myself probably seems like the more economical and time-saving option... which was why I placed all my hopes on Liese Blauné One-Touch Color, the new DIY hair dye which promises to provide 1.5x more efficient white hair coverage!

Prior to this, I have not dyed my hair before whether it is at a salon or using a DIY hair colour kit. But the wifey had dyed her hair on her own before - in fact, I assisted her - and I remembered having to mix two different sets of cream together before applying it on the hair. It was rather tedious but that was nothing compared to the ammonia smell that came with the creams!

So when I unboxed the Liese Blauné One-Touch Color kit, I was surprised to find just one bottle dispenser, a comb and a syringe.

Turns out that the dispenser is able to dispense the right amount of cream in just one press. All I had to do to get started was to press the pump lever and ensure that both creams were dispensed equally onto the comb.

It was really THAT simple. And the best part, there was NO manual mixing required on my part!

Oh and in case you are wondering, the cream has no pungent ammonia smell. Instead, it has a gentle fragrance which is important if you do not wish to go out with hair that smells like ammonia immediately after colouring your hair.

Then came the fun part - I combed the creams straight onto my hair and with every stroke of the comb, the advanced cream technology ensures both creams are instantly well-mixed which allows each hair strand to be completely covered.

It was really so easy that even Ale could do it for me! I actually think she enjoyed it tremendously (because it felt like painting).

Complementing the magic of the creams is the unique triple reach brush that comes with the kit. The soft rubber bristles on the brush helped to push the cream down to the roots of my hair, targeting the strands of white hair from root to tip. To ensure complete coverage, the comb also comes with a mini brush – small but mighty, the mini brush finds its way even to hard-to-reach areas such as the hairline and around the ears!

So after using the comb to distribute the cream evenly, I was done. And it took me no more than 10 minutes!

All I had to do next was to leave the cream on my hair for 15 minutes. Can you tell Ale was excited to see the result of her handiwork? LOL.

Alright, me too actually. So when the time was up, I went to rinse my hair by shampooing twice and then dried it thoroughly.

And this was the result.

Cannot see clearly? Let me zoom in on the top of my head for you.

OH-EM-GEE! For once, I have a head full of black hair! And my hair feels softer too even though I did not put any conditioner after rinsing off the hair dye.

And the best part? The unused portion of the cream in the dispenser can be kept for future use! All I had to do was to use the syringe to wash the nozzles of the dispenser thoroughly and I am able to keep it for multiple touch-ups as my hair grows longer. Yay to even more savings!

At the end of the day, females are not the only ones who are concerned about white hair. I'm sure many males have the same worries too. But more often than not, we either cannot find the time to head to the salon regularly or simply cannot be bothered about our white hair.

Well, no more excuses now with Liese Blauné One-Touch Color - not only is it so simple and quick to use, it is also pretty affordable at only S$15.90! For me, I can now look younger than my age, at a fraction of the usual cost and time taken!

Liese Blauné One-Touch Color is available at leading hypermarkets, supermarkets and western pharmacies, retailing at a promotional price of $15.90 (U.P. $17.90) from now until the end of May 2017.

Of all the listings I compile whenever the public or school holidays come along, it is the June and December School Holidays that I always dread compiling the most. The reason? That's because these two holidays are always packed with SO MANY activities for kids!

So a good 8 hours later, I have finally completed my 'homework' just before the school holidays click into motion. No need to fret over how to keep the kiddos occupied this June School Holidays... there're more than 70 activities below to pick from - in fact, I would easily say the activities number more than 100 if you count the individual activities under the broad banner of Children's Season and Pesta Ubin!

I've divided the activities into OUTDOOR and INDOOR so plan away! And have fun!

At their annual Big Band Bash at the Singapore Botanic Gardens this year, you will hear jazz standards from the 1930's and 40's which were the then "top of the pops", along with jazz tunes from the repertoire of present day composers. Do bring along a picnic basket and dine al fresco in lush, green surroundings while the bands delight you with tunes designed to brighten up your weekend.

The Dyson V8 Sucks so it's all Good!

Advertorial

If you had read my previous article on how the wifey and I cope with 3 kids, one of the things we do is we employ routines at home. The beauty about having routines is that it takes the thinking out of what to do next for all of us.We have pretty much drilled into our monkies what the main daily routines are like. So whether it is getting ready for school early in the morning, watching TV only after meals, or designated time to get changed and ready for bedtime, they know what has and needs to be done.

And the other thing? We allocate tasks at home too.

Everyone has a role in our household. Be it setting up the table for meals, food preparation in the kitchen, bringing out the dirty laundry, watering plants, vacuuming, we make it a point to involve the 3 monkies in our daily chores.

Because believe it or not, there are huge benefits for kids who help out with household chores (other than the fact that I am a firm believer in child labour). Establishing a chore routine and assigning chores make kids feel responsible and it builds up their self reliance. Contributing to chores can also teach them to be empathetic and responsive to other’s needs. Most importantly, the tasks make the monkies realise and appreciate the efforts that keep our family running.

So how do you get kids to help with the household chores?

First things first, don’t expect perfection. They are learning but they will get better.

To start off, build it into the routine. Small things like making their beds are easy to get started. Let the kids take turns to help out for certain routines on different days of the week. And make it age appropriate - even toddlers can help if you give them an appropriate job.

Above all, get involved. Do some housework together on a weekend morning. Because keeping the house clean is a team effort. But whatever you do, do NOT offer tangible rewards like money. Research has shown that giving money can actually lower children’s motivation. It turns an altruistic act into a business transaction.

For some reason, the monkies have been jostling to do ONE single household chore the past one week - which is vacuuming our entire house. And I highly suspect it has something to do with this sucker.

Okay, to be put it more appropriately, it is the new Dyson V8 vacuum cleaner. Other than the fact that it looks so aesthetically pleasing to the eye,  it is entirely cord-free! I don't know about you but I absolutely dread hooking up the vacuum cleaner of the old to a power socket and having to lug it everywhere around the house.

The Dyson V8 is an entirely different ball game altogether. All I have to do is to charge it up and I can just use it anywhere in the house!

So now, the monkies are able to move from room to room without having to unplug and lug a machine along, and they get to almost any corner in the house as the V8 is extremely easy to manoeuver to reach around and underneath sofas, beds, cupboards and in tight spaces.

And do not let its slim and lightweight looks - it's weighs only 2.6kg by the way - fool you. Small-sized it may be, but its power is not compromised. Its compact and powerful Dyson digital motor V8 offers powerful, fade-free suctions. Its motor is so powerful, it spins at 10,000pm - 5 times faster than a F1 car engine!

For me, the most amazing thing I learned about the V8 is that the air that leaves the machine is cleaner than the air we breathe in! This is very important for me – with the monkies handling the vacuum, it’s good to know that they aren’t breathing in any allergens and bacteria while helping with the cleaning.

The monkies though, love the V8 for another reason - its versatility. The V8 effortlessly converts between stick and handheld mode, which makes it easy for them to vacuum different areas of the house.

Thanks to the various attachments that came with the entire V8 package, Ayd was able to start cleaning our sofa.

For those deep corners of the sofa - which usually tends to be favourite hiding places for crumbs and chips - just a quick change of the vacuum head and the job was done!

Ale also got into the action, by helping to clean our cupboards and window ledges... by simply switching to a brush head attachment.

As for me, I got the most delicate job of all. Cleaning my laptop keyboard. LOL.

The thing about the design of the V8 is that its key components like the motor and battery are positioned near the hand, which makes the vacuum lighter and easier to lift when having to vacuum at higher parts of the house.

Oh, did I mention that it comes with two suction levels too? For more heavy duty jobs, just flip to the switch to 'MAX' mode and let the V8 work its magic!

So vacuuming is the easy part but emptying the dust contents can be a pain in the butt when it comes to vacuum cleaners. However, I must say the V8's dirt disposal system is the best I have ever seen in a vacuum cleaner. All it takes is just one pull of the lever upwards and the bin-emptying mechanism hygienically drives out the dirt and dust in one complete action. There is NO need to touch the dirt at all!

A single charge of the V8 allows for up to 40 minutes of vacuum time, which has so far allowed the monkies to each have their turn vacuuming before the battery runs out!

I think it is safe to say all of us in the family adore the Dyson V8. Although it is a very lightweight vacuum cleaner, it boasts the performance of a conventional vacuum cleaner and moves effortlessly from different kinds of surfaces. Add in the different attachments, and it is really one multi-functional vacuum cleaner for the house... and even for my car.

Most importantly, the monkies are now vacuuming my floor at every single opportunity!

The Dyson V8 is retailing for S$899 at all leading departmental and electrical stores island-
wide.

Laze on an 8m-high Canopy Web & Walk on Elevated Boardwalks at the Family-friendly Learning Forest

$

There's a new park to bring the kids, where they get to soak in the sights and sounds of nature, walk on elevated boardwalks and - without a doubt, this has got to be the highlight - laze on canopy webs, 8-metres above the ground!

The Learning Forest is the newest extension of Singapore Botanic Gardens and located in located in the new Tyersall-Gallop Core. It is designed to integrate with the existing 6-hectare Rain Forest to form an enlarged forest habitat.

Spread over a stunning 10-hectare area (that's equivalent to 15 football fields!), it was destroyed by fire more than 100 years ago but has slowly and naturally regenerated over the years. Now, the Learning Forest features a network of boardwalks and elevated walkways that allow visitors to explore habitats ranging from a freshwater forest wetland to a lowland rainforest.

The Learning Forest is divided into five areas - The SPH Walk of Giants, the Lowland Rainforest, Keppel Discovery Wetlands, Bambusetum, and Wild Fruit Tree Arboretum.

Map Credit: NParks (Click to enlarge)

Main entrance is through the Tyersall Gate, while there is very limited parking near the Visitor Services Counter. However, it is a leisure walk from Swan Lake as well so getting there via the main Botanic Gardens area will not be that strenuous either.

Our first stop was the Keppel Discovery Wetlands, where a 1.8-hectare restoration project of the forest wetland ecosystem  awaited us. As we walked along the elevated boardwalk, the monkies took the chance to pick out some of the plant species that are typical of freshwater forest wetland habitats in the region... which, as they found out, the habitats are highly endangered.

The Keppel Discovery Wetlands is also home to the Orchid Islands, Botanists' Boardwalk and Pulai Marsh, where the latter is a freshwater swamp habitat that eventually feeds into Swan Lake, a natural water source in the main garden.

As we walked further, we arrived at the Lowland Rainforest boardwalk which consists of three sections - Bark of Trees, Products of the Forest and Durian Theory.

The Bark of Trees features exposition of the diversity of textures and colours exhibited by trees in their bark. Do not miss having a feel of the white flaky bark of the Gelam tree while you are there!

The Products of the Forest collection features forest plants that are cultivated for human uses such as timber, building materials and food. Pretty interesting for the monkies, though it was not as interesting as stumbling onto a huge family of mushrooms!

As for me, I found the Durian Theory to be quite fascinating. This part of the Learning Forest features tree species with specialised growth forms that inspired E J H Corner to formulate his 'Durian Theory'. Corner postulated that many of today's plants are descended from tree species with large fruit similar to durians.

As we moved on, the path brought us back to an elevated boardwalk once again where we were in the company of towering trees at the SPH Walk of Giants.

Measuring approximately 260 m in length, the boardwalk took us from ground level up to a height of 8 m and brought us up-close to a diversity of plant species that are found in lowland rainforests in the region, including a variety of forest 'giants', palms, epiphytes and climbers.

But the real highlight at SPH Walk of Giants has got to be this.

The Canopy Web allows visitors to experience being in the canopy of a forest from a height of about 8m and it is awesome!

Just ask the monkies.

Visitors get to lie on the installed canopy webs, be among the canopy layer of century-old trees and gaze up into the crowns of trees.

We even bumped into Dana and Buddy from Life's Tiny Miracles while we were there!

A word of caution: the web is NOT meant to be a trampoline so jumping on the netting is not allowed.

Near the Keppel Discovery Wetlands is the Wild Fruit Trees Arboretum, where it is home to more than 50 species of trees. Most of the fruit trees are still young though, but expect to see them bear fruit soon with the likes of lychee, jackfruit, mangosteen and nutmeg.

The fifth section is the Bambusetum, which features over 30 species of tropical bamboos, showcasing the wide diversity of growth forms that occur naturally in the wild. Look out for the Giant Bamboo, which can grow up to 10 storeys, and its stems are wide enough to be used as buckets when cut!

No matter whether your kids are young or old, I strongly recommend paying The Learning Forest a visit. The entire area is extremely walkable as there are hardly any steps to climb. It's even stroller-friendly, thanks to the walkways and elevated boardwalks.

I love how the terrain changes - from elevated to ground and back to elevated - as we made our way through The Learning Forest. Definitely a non-exhausting and kid-friendly way to learn more about our flora and fauna right here in Singapore. And best of all, it is all FREE!

We are nearly approaching the end of the first half of 2017 and while there are the usual places to bring the kiddos, there are quite a number of new places that have sprouted up this year to discover together as a family.

Some of them may be familiar names but to the kids, they offer a different fun experience! So the next time the holidays or weekends come along, here are 14 new adventures - of which NINE are FREE for all! - to take your pick from.

1. Let 'Em Play

Located at Tradehub21 (near International Business Park and The Chevrons in Jurong), Let 'Em Play is a brand new family-centric edutainment hub which combines both the fun of wall-climbing AND high elements obstacle course.

There are a total of 5 different types of climbing walls, each with varying difficulty as well as a 2-level high elements obstacle course. Billed as the FIRST and ONLY indoor High Elements Obstacle Course in Singapore, this course features over 15 different obstacles - and all in air-conditioned comfort! The course is suitable for both adults and children as young as 3 or 4 years old (accompanied by parents). Kids who are over 6 years of age can go on the course on their own.

The REAL highlight at Let ’Em Play though, is Singapore’s FIRST Augmented Reality Rock Climbing Wall. Currently one of the hottest trends around the world, Augmented Reality (AR) Climbing is the world’s first global gaming platform for climbing walls which projects graphics onto a climbing wall and paired with proprietary body tracking to create a variety of interactive games, like how participants are tasked to climb the wall in order to smash a bat.

2. KIDZLAND Indoor Playground

Located right beside PasarBella at The Grandstand, KIDZLAND spans over 12,000 square feet and consists of 2 portions: an indoor playground and an arcade centre. The Forest indoor playground is a jungle-themed one, and recommended for kids between three and 12 years of age. The main play area consists of a three-level climbing structure with various obstacles, tunnels and slides to get through.

One of the focal points at the Main Play Area is the mini Carousel area, where kids will be able to hop on for a good spin. But the most unique - and most instagrammable - portion of the indoor playground has got be the Rainbow Net, which is a huge 2-level climbing net structure that kids will have a fun time ascending.

Have kids that find the indoor playground childish? A massive arcade centre forms part of KIDZLAND and comprises of all the game machines that you can imagine.

3. The Learning Forest

The Learning Forest is the newest extension of Singapore Botanic Gardens and located in located in the new Tyersall-Gallop Core. Spread over a stunning 10-hectare area (that's equivalent to 15 football fields!), the Learning Forest features a network of boardwalks and elevated walkways that allow visitors to explore habitats ranging from a freshwater forest wetland to a lowland rainforest.

The Learning Forest is divided into five areas - The SPH Walk of Giants, the Lowland Rainforest, Keppel Discovery Wetlands, Bambusetum, and Wild Fruit Tree Arboretum. The biggest draw is the Canopy Web which allows visitors to experience being in the canopy of a forest from a height of about 8m. Visitors get to lie on the installed canopy webs, be among the canopy layer of century-old trees and gaze up into the crowns of trees!

No matter whether your kids are young or old, I strongly recommend paying The Learning Forest a visit. The entire area is extremely walkable as there are hardly any steps to climb. It's even stroller-friendly, thanks to the walkways and elevated boardwalks.

4. Diggersite @ ORTO

Located at ORTO, Singapore's first 24-hour multi-recreational park, Diggersite offers little diggers the chance to realise their dream of operating a real-life working excavator! Previously at East Coast Park, Diggersite now occupies a larger area in Yishun which means that the construction vehicles are spaced out further apart.

All of the previous stations at East Coast have been replicated here - some with a slight twist. In total, there are now 5 stations where one of the fave will be kids having the chance to drive - yes, DRIVE - a forklift around the Diggersite compound while transporting a wooden mallet from one point to another. For kids who love sand play, there is a dedicated sand pit with sand toys.

5. Aviation-themed Playground at Seletar Aeospace Park

The Oval at Seletar Aerospace Park (SAP) is currently the foodie hot spot to head to for a family-friendly alfresco brunch or dinner. But for kids, the aviation-themed playground is undoubtedly the main attraction.

In keeping with the aviation theme of SAP, all the play structures at the playground come in the form of aeroplanes and other aviation landmarks.

The playground is essentially divided into 2 areas: one for toddlers and younger kids while the other is for older kids who love a good climb. The toddler area features a mini play structure where everything are mini-sized, like the climbing rope, ladder, wall and slide. For older kids, they might fancy the other playground which comes with larger play structure and a control tower. There is also a huge life-sized Ludo (or aeroplane chess) board game that parents and kids can play together!

Re-branded as Palawan Pirate Ship, the water play area retains all the play features that the kids love. Housing a signature water play area in the shape of a huge pirate ship, expect lots of water pistols, slides and water jets. There is also a wading pool surrounding the entire ship!

7. Pang Sua Pond

Built in the 1990s, Pang Sua Pond's main job is to collect rainwater runoff from the surrounding areas before the water is pumped to the Upper Seletar Reservoir for storage and treatment. Under PUB's Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme, the pond has been revitalised after a 30-month makeover where the drains, canals and reservoirs have been integrated with the surrounding environment to create beautiful community spaces for all to enjoy.

Now, it is home to Singapore’s second largest floating wetland and boasts a boardwalk across the pond. And it is beautiful.

Located just a 10-minute walk from the Senja LRT station and beside Senja-Cashew Community Club, the pond features a 480m-long elevated boardwalk suspended at a height up to 7m above water, connecting residents to facilities such as the new 3G Wellness Centre and Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park. More interestingly, Singapore's second-largest man-made floating wetland system (the largest being Sengkang Floating Wetland in Punggol Reservoir) can be found at Pang Sua Pond.

Besides beautifying the surroundings, the wetland plants serve an important purpose which is to help improve water quality in the pond and also create a habitat for dragonflies, birds and fishes.

12. Clip 'n Climb

Okay, so I cheated a little because this attraction opened late last year. But hey, this is one indoor playground with a difference and one which I am sure kids will go crazy over!

New Zealand's indoor climbing theme park Clip 'n Climb has set up base at HomeTeamNS Tampines' space located at the refurbished Our Tampines Hub, a community and sports centre. Quirkily designed walls awash in bright colours greet climbers at Clip 'n Climb, which is not your run-of-the-mill indoor climbing joint. There are 19 wall designs in the 260sqm facility that range from easy for the rookies to difficult for the more experienced, such as the snaking beanstalk from fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk, a lightning bolt and Morse code-inspired one.

The park utilises an automatic belay system, which means kids can climb the different walls at the same time without having to take turns. Experience a twist in rock climbing at the Dry Ice wall where you’ll be given ‘ice picks’ - a pair of wooden sticks - to scale the structure and manoeuver yourself to the top. There is no minimum age for climbers, they just need to weigh between 10 and 150kg.

Head HERE for a detailed review.

Address: Our Tampines Hub, 51 Tampines Ave 4 #03-03, Singapore 529684
Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday: 12pm – 9pm | Friday and Saturday: 10am – 11pm | Sunday and public holiday: 10am – 9pm | School holiday and eve of public holiday: 10am – 11pm (1st Monday of every month: 2pm – 9pm)
Cost: From $18 for 90 minutes. View all rates HERE.

13. Chestnut Nature Park

There are two areas to Chestnut Nature Park – Chestnut Nature Park (South) and Chestnut Nature Park (North). Chestnut Nature Park (South) opened last year and is Singapore’s first nature park with separate mountain biking and hiking trails. Chestnut Nature Park (North) opened in February this year and together with the southern portion, Chestnut Nature Park now totals 81 hectares, making it Singapore’s largest nature park to date.

If you are planning to bring the kids for their first taste of hiking, great news - the hiking trail is slightly undulating and pretty straightforward. Chestnut Nature Park (South) has a 2.1km hiking trail, while Chestnut Nature Park (North) has a 3.5km hiking trail. Click HERE to download the southern hiking trail and HERE for the northern hiking trail.

For more adrenaline thrills, the 8.2 km mountain biking trail at the fully completed Chestnut Nature Park comprises varying levels of difficulty ranging from easy, moderately difficult, very difficult and extremely difficult. Visitors can rent mountain bicycles at AIRE MTB (Address: 201 Chestnut Avenue, #01-K1, Singapore 679525).

Address: Located along Chestnut Avenue
Opening Hours: 7am - 7pm daily
Cost: Free Admission

14. Playeum's 'Making It Home' Exhibition

Located at Gillman Barracks, Playeum is a museum without walls which hopes to inspire children through self-directed exploration and learning and in the process, establish a culture of meaningful and impactful play.

The new exhibition opened on 16 May and will last all the way until 29 October 2017 and it is all about dreaming rooms, making spaces and creating places.

Head HERE for my review.

Address: Blk 47, Malan Road, Gillman Barracks, #01-23, Singapore 109444
Opening Hours: Tues - Sun: 10am - 6pm (Closed on Mondays)
Cost: $22 per child (1-12) | Accompanying adult: Free | Additional accompanying adult: $10

A Day of Family Fun at Westgate Summer Camp

Advertorial

We are halfway through the June School Holidays and as expected, the shopping malls in Singapore are abuzz with plenty of activities to keep the kiddos entertained. And rather than the usual Meet & Greet shows, Westgate kept the kids physically active last year with its Westgate Summer Camp which allowed kids to try various games and sports, like rock-climbing, soccer shoot-out, human pool ball and bowling.

GREAT NEWS! Westgate Summer Camp returns this June School Holidays for a month of fun and adventure with The Adventure Edition! Held on 2 to 4, 16 to 18 and 23 to 26 June 2017 at The Courtyard, a range of outdoor activities in the form of an elaborate obstacle course wait the young adults.

All you have to do is to spend a minimum of $80 (or $60 for American Express® CapitaCard members) to redeem a Westgate Summer Camp ticket. Each ticket allows one child - recommended for ages 3 to 12 - to go on the 3-station mini obstacle course.

Any wonder that the monkies could not wait to go through the obstacle course the moment they set their eyes on it???

First up, the swinging platforms which the monkies cleared it rather effortlessly.

Next, they scaled up the rope structure... I had a feeling that the training they underwent at the recent Army Open House helped. Heh.

The final Tyre Hop station had them traverse from one end of the tyres to the opposite end, one after the other.

Upon completion of the obstacle course, be sure to flock to the redemption booth to collect the limited souvenir badges which the kids can pin on a sash.

And with the presence of a photo booth beside the obstacle course, the monkies could not pass up the chance to pose for a wacky photo!

But wait, the Westgate Summer Camp ticket also entitles each child to a craft session at The Courtyard too!

The craft workshops change the type of craft work weekly but while we were there, the monkies tried their hand at making their own animal bookmarks.

An experienced facilitator was present to guide the monkies and I have to say, the end products were just too cute! Definitely a craft item that would come in useful at home.

Okay, so not only does one Westgate Summer Camp ticket let a child have a go at the Obstacle Course and get all crafty at the art workshop, he or she also gets to play an arcade game to round off a day of fun!

Which the monkies obviously needed no invitation to play. LOL.

And if you are heading to Westgate this weekend (10 & 11 June), the Army Museum of Singapore is bringing a portion of its activities to the shopping mall as part of Children's Season Singapore 2017!

Kids get to try on child-sized Army uniforms, complete with props at the Be a Soldier session (Session 1: 2pm-4pm / Session 2: 7pm-9pm).

More crafts are in store for the little ones at Soldier Craft (Session 1: 10am-2pm / Session 2: 4pm-7pm) where they can take part in raft activities and learn about different roles soldiers take on – security trooper, tank commander, Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD), and more. Get to know more about a key player in the MWDU (Military Working Dog Unit), the military working dog too!

Feeling hungry after all the activities? We certainly did! Fortunately, we can still count on Westgate’s newest cafes and restaurants to fill our growling bellies. And we did just that at Masizzim, a hip casual Korean restaurant.

Pronounced as ma-see-zim, the restaurant's signature dish is its stews... which comes with a 4-step ordering process:

1. Choose beef, pork or spicy chicken
2. Soy or Spicy from Levels 1 to 4
3. Choose noodles – Korean style udon or glass noodles
4. Choose optional add-ons such as cheese, toppoki, or extra noodles.

Since the monkies were with me, I chose the soy-based Beef Rib Stew ($18.80 for one person & $32.80 for two persons) with glass noodles. AND IT WAS SO GOOD. Or least that was what Ash and Ayd declared.

The beef was very well marinated and tender but the clincher was the soup which is made from an umami blend of soy sauce, pineapples and Korean pear.

In terms of fun dishes, the Rice Ball dish takes the cake. Yes, it is no typo - the dish is Rice BALL, not Rice Bowl.

Reason being you got to 'work' for the dish. We had the Crabmeat & Roe Rice Ball ($10.80) which required the monkies to don a glove and mix the ingredients using hands!

Once the ingredients are nicely mixed, the mmonkies then moulded the mixture into rice balls and popped them into their mouths. Playing with food has never been this fun - and legit!

Another best seller is the Potato Pancake ($12.80) which is a crispy Korean pancake fried with potato and soya marinade.

This was a hit with Ale, who had THREE servings of the pancake!

But the unanimous dish of the day at Masizzim belonged to this unassuming egg roll.

But this was no ordinary egg roll. It is the Honey Mustard Cheese Egg Roll ($9.80) which consists of fluffy rolled omelette drizzled with honey mustard sauce and oozing with melted mozzarella cheese.

Pure heaven. But you probably already knew that from Ale's expression.

And we washed everything down with Masizzim's signature drink, Grapefruit Yogurt. The kids were no fans of grapefruit, but this drink was so refreshing that I only got to savour one miserable cup in the end. Drats.

One would have thought that the monkies would be full after all the food BUT no, there is always room for desserts at the newly-opened Bojio Cafe! Famed for its very instagrammable Lava and Shibuya toasts, it certainly got the monkies' undivided attention when our toast was literally set ablaze with a blow torch!

The Charcoal Lava Toast with Mentaiko ($18.90) was a wonderful surprise mix of sweet and savoury flavours. Cutting into the crusty toast allowed the rich mentaiko sauce to seep out, drenching the toast in savoury lava. Paired with the Gula Melaka ice cream, this unique dish is good enough to be a meal on its own.

If the monkies thought that watching their toast get torched was interesting, seeing a stream of gooey cheese flow from a Swiss raclette onto a thick toast was strangely satisfying.

The Raclette Cheese Toast ($18.90) had hot and stretchy cheese dripping over the sides of the thick Shibuya toast, ensuring that the toast is encapsulated with the cheesy goodness.

The monkies didn't enjoy this dish as much as the mentaiko one though, probably because the cheese taste was a tad strong for their tastebuds. But there is always the Charcoal ice cream to save the day!

Rounding the June School Holidays activities at Westgate is the Isetan Summer Hokkaido Fair, which will be taking place from now until 19 June 2017 at the B1 Atrium.

Expect to sample a variety of Hokkaido delicacies such as Hokkaido Kukubo (assorted Matcha cakes), Shiroi Koibito cookies and ice-cream!

And a day out at Westgate will not be complete if the monkies did not visit the FREE Westgate Wonderland, Singapore’s largest thematic outdoor playground, on Level 4.

Now that is what I call maximising a day of fun during the school holidays!

5 Top Picks of Children's Season Singapore 2017

$

Advertorial

My favourite festival for kids is back this June School Holidays so if you only have time to let your kids do one thing this holiday period, attending the events at Children's Season Singapore 2017 will be it.

Jointly presented by the National Heritage Board (NHB) and Museum Roundtable (MR), the highly anticipated annual festival for children will be taking on a new direction this year by going beyond museums, heritage and culture, to include interests such as music, performing arts and nature.

As part of its 10th edition - yes, it's 10 years old! - Children’s Season Singapore will see first-time partners – the Esplanade, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Wildlife Reserves Singapore and Singapore Tyler Print Institute (STPI), joining other NHB and MR museums to present a host of wide-ranging programmes and exhibitions. Expect a range of kid-centric programmes and engaging family activities that will inspire, engage and educate!

In fact, the entire Children's Season Singapore 2017 programme will see more than 120 exhibitions, programmes and activities spread across 29 partners. Definitely spoilt for choice! Of course, the usual perennial faves like the National Museum of Singapore continues to have kid-friendly activities, including a bouncy bumboat inflatable and a soft netting of an inverted dome where visitors will be able to lie down to observe the beauty of the National Museum’s iconic stained glass dome.

But I highly suspect that kids will be flocking to the Giant snoozing at the basement where they will get the chance to doodle away on his body!

Truth is, there are actually plenty of other locations which offer Children's Season Singapore activities as well. So over one weekend, I gathered the monkies and visited 3 such locations. Here was what we got up to:

Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum

With 20 zones spread over two floors, the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum traces the history of life on earth - from the microscopic to the enormous, and from the awkward to the awesome. Of course, the sauropod dinosaur fossils from the Jurassic period form the highlight of the museum. The adult dinosaurs, measuring 24m and 27m respectively, have been nicknamed Apollonia and Prince, while the baby dinosaur called Twinky is 12m long.

There were plenty of natural history specimens to pique the monkies' interest but the greatest one of all belonged to the skeleton of a sperm whale which was found dead off Jurong Island on 10 July 2015.

Nicknamed as the 'Jubilee Whale' because it was found during our SG50 year, it was de-fleshed and its bones were carefully treated and pieced back together. And the entire process can be viewed as a video at the museum's first temporary exhibition, Out of the Water - in time for Children's Season Singapore 2017!

Stories help us share our experiences and the things we have learnt with our friends, families, and even the next generation. Along the way, these stories may have been mixed with ;misunderstandings' which gave rise to myths... and these probably laid the foundations that shaped the stories of mermaids, sea-dwelling monsters and other magical animals.

At the exhibition, the monkies got to explore myths and legends from Singapore and beyond in a different, new light and experience them in a new way. It was an eye-opener for them, finding out which bits were just plain fantasy, and the parts that actually happened in real life!

And if your kids wish to get all crafty with their hands (like mine), then be sure to head to the museum's main lobby for the Biodiversity Craft sessions!

Happening only on weekends in June 2017, the session is priced at $8 per child (or $5 for LKCNHM Members, Ticket Holders, NUS Staff & Students).

Kids will be able to learn more about biodiversity, why it is important, and how they can help protect our world's biodiversity through a series of brain games and activities.

To top it off, kids can create their own form of biodiversity with craft materials - something that Ale was only too keen to complete!

Singapore Philatelic Museum

From now until October 2017, parents and kids can enter the fantastical realm of fairy tales through beautiful stamps from all over the world through the museum's A Little Magic exhibition! I am sure the magical stories - The Little Mermaid, Little Red Riding Hood, The Ugly Duckling, etc - woven by the likes of Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm, and Charles Perrault are familiar to us. Through interactive and hands-on exhibits, kids will be able to relive the magic of these timeless tales.

Or if your kids are like my monkies, they will pounce on the chance to go on the Little Red Riding Hood Activity Trail which will bring them on a quest to hunt for clues in the galleries. At the end of it all, they got to redeem a special prize for their efforts.

If you are there on a weekend, expect plenty of other kid-friendly activities happening in the museum as well!

Oh and while you are there, do not miss the Precious Eggs: Of Art, Beauty and Culture exhibition too.

Featuring colourfully decorated quail, chicken, duck, goose, swan and ostrich eggs, there are also eggs crafted of precious and enamelled metals, glass, porcelain, wax, crystal, marble, stone, wood, reindeer horn, cardboard, and papier-mâché.  Also on show is a series of artists’ eggs, a set of commissioned sculptures to showcase the works of Liechtenstein’s leading artists.

The monkies' fave activity of the lot though, was Mother Goose’s Egg-citing Craft where they learnt about pysanka - Ukrainian Easter eggs which are decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method.

I think being able to decorate a hard-boiled egg and bringing it home definitely helped!

Asian Civilisations Museum

This June School Holidays, kids get to explore the oceans every Friday (16 & 23 June 2017)! As part of the museum's Fun-tastic Fridays programme, visitors will be able to dive into the deep through its galleries, make their own special sea animals, listen to intriguing stories and watch exciting performances!

If you are at the museum at 3pm, be sure to catch the Story Whisperer: Tales from the Sea segment where kids will be able to go on a 30-minute storytelling tour and discover fishy tales from Asian folklore.

The sea theme ties in with ACM's newest exhibition, Ghost Nets of the Ocean, a spectacular marine-themed exhibition where fish, turtles, squid, and jellyfish have made from ocean debris, including abandoned fishing nets and recycled plastics. These colourful woven sculptures show the peoples connections to the sea, and strive to generate awareness of ocean pollution, recycling, and conservation of the marine environment.

MOE Heritage Centre

If you have ever wondered what school was like for students living on islands around Singapore, then the Let’s Go Old School!: Exploration Trail will be an interesting experience! Students used to save their money by buying stamps and sticking them on stamp cards in the 1970s and kids will be able to do just that on the trail by picking up an activity card and stamping their way through the galleries as they learn more about the Singapore Education Story! Complete the trail and they will be rewarded with a special old-school momento too!

Venue: Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, PIP’s PLAYbox (Level 4)

What better way to appreciate the beautiful and natural phenomenon of a rainbow than to make your very own rainbow cloud with fun and recyclable materials. Take your rainbow cloud with you when you travel and “smile” back at the sky the next time you spot a rainbow!

BUT no matter which venue you head to during Children's Season Singapore 2017, there is ONE activity that you MUST remember to accomplish.

Pick up a copy of the Children’s Season Passport* and collect stamps at various venues.

All you have to do is to visit THREE venues and stamp your passport at the various embossing stations (except Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, which will use ink stamps as a substitute).

Snap a photo of all 3 stamps in the Passport and visit www.museums.com.sg/cs17/stamp-n-win to submit your entry. Prizes include a photoshoot package, dining vouchers, bookstore vouchers and even an electric scooter! All winners will be announced on 30 June 2017, and is limited to one entry per participant.

Limited quantities of the passports available at participating venues. *While stocks last.

But HURRY, because two weekends are all that is left of Children's Season Singapore 2017 so you have to be quick if you wish to bring your kids down for its kid-friendly activities... and collect stamps in your Passport!

Help! My Hair is Ageing Faster than me!

$
0
0
Advertorial

The hair, just like any other parts of the human body, is susceptible to the natural ageing process. As we become older, our hair experience gradual and significant differences in the colour, texture, thickness, health and manageability. And if you find that your hair is ageing faster than it should, this may have to do with three simple factors: stress, hormones, and diet.

Stress
Hair loss and thinning can be triggered by stress, and it causes the hair follicles go into non-growth state, stopping growth for a significant period of time.

Hormones
Hormones have an effect similar to that of stress on your hair’s health. Fluctuations in hormone levels causes the body to experience stress, forcing hair growth to halt.

Diet
Nutritional deficiencies such as high cholesterol and insufficient Vitamin B, iron, protein, or Vitamin C can be one of the causes of ageing hair.

Interestingly, did you know that our hair has an 'age' too? I did not know it before, and only found out after a trip down to TK TrichoKare, the leading trichological centre in Singapore that features customised treatments validated by certified trichologists with products formulated by a professional herbalist.

And after a consultation with my friendly trichologist along with the Advanced Tricho Hair Test, came the BIG REVEAL...

I'm currently 40 years old BUT my hair is 48 years old!

According to my trichologist, ageing hair can be identified by 5 symptoms: thinning hair, grey hair, dryness, brittleness and lacklustre. She shared that as we age, our hair undergoes a severe transformation - the pigment cells gradually decrease which will slow down the production in melanin, resulting in grey hair.

A decrease in the production of collagen and elastin causes out hair to become dry and brittle. The hair follicle shrinks over time, the diameter of each individual hair reduces, resulting in thinning hair.

Which unfortunately, can be seen from an analysis of my scalp.

Healthy hair follicles usually have two or three strands of hair sprouting from them. Mine? As you can see, most of my hair follicles only have one strand... which spells trouble if I leave the problem go unchecked.

Fortunately, help is available at TrichoKare! My trichologist recommended TrichoKare's newest treatment programme, Advanced Age Defying Hair Treatment, an anti-ageing hair treatment that has been specially developed to help both men and women counteract age-related changes in the density and diameter of their hair.

Like all its other treatments, TrichoKare only uses premium European herbal hair remedies in its customised treatments so as to deliver a natural solution for its customers. And the Advanced Age Defying Hair Treatment features the latest innovative Oxyjet technology, which helps to replenish essential nutrients for the scalp and rejuvenate hair roots to restore youthful vitality to one's hair!

Using pulsed oxygen pressure, an infusion of pure oxygen and nutrients are "shot" into the deep layers of the scalp. The active ingredients are able to penetrate deeply into the scalp without needles, which means it is all gentle, effective and safe! This process also helps to increase blood circulation and encourage the production of collagen - resulting in hair growth and preventing hair loss.

And speaking of the active ingredients used in the treatment, emu oil and gingko biloba extract make up the mixture being 'blasted' into my scalp.

Both ingredients are known to be effective in counteracting ageing hair - emu oil is able to reactivate up to 80% dormant hair follicles, accelerate cell regeneration to stimulate hair growth, and boost the diameter and thickness of each hair while gingko biloba extract can boost collagen and melanin production to prevent greying hair, counteract signs of ageing scalp, and reduce hair loss.

Together with a hair tonic rub and Infrared Therapy Light, which served to improve the blood circulation beneath the scalp as well as to ensure that the tonic was further penetrated deep down to my hair roots, my Advanced Age Defying Hair Treatment was complete.

Collectively, the Advanced Age Defying Hair Treatment has 6 great benefits:

1. Detox Scalp

Enriched with a potent blend of botanical extracts, the treatment helps to deeply cleanse the hair roots which regulates excess sebum production, removes all dead skin cells and slows down scalp ageing.

2. Strengthen hair roots

The treatment infuses the hair with proteins to reduce hair breakage and improve hair elasticity. The presence of Capsicum Annuum extract with C-Complex vitamins helps to boost micro-circulation and strengthen the hair follicles.

3. Increase hair density

By strengthening the cohesion of keratin fibres to promote hair density, the treatment invigorates shrunken hair follicles and promotes hair follicle regeneration.

4. Moisture & Soften hair

Active botanical extract such as rosemary provides key nutrients to nourish the fibre and soften the hair from the roots, infusing vital nourishment and deep moisture for silky-soft texture.

5. Restore lustre

The presence of Camellia extract in the treatment enhances the hair's natural, glossy shine, restoring the hair's natural radiance.

6. Reverse grey hair

Possibly the best benefit for me - the treatment supports the production of melanin in the hair shaft which inhibits grey hair.

All well and good - BUT how did my scalp look like after one round of treatment?

Obviously, I was not expecting miracles (like miraculous hair growth!) after just one treatment but as you can see from the Before and After photos above, I have a greasy scalp, so oil was clogging up some follicles (circled in red) which impedes hair growth. Now, my clogged pores and greasy scalp are virtually gone. My hair follicles also looked healthier and less brittle than the initial scan. A clean scalp and hair follicles are important to promote healthy hair growth. My scalp and hair has seen a significant improvement, the results were extremely satisfying!

What I took away most from the session was not my improved scalp condition though. I learnt from my trichologist that what you see on the outside does not exactly translate to perfection on the inside. And if you would like to understand the state (and age) of your hair and scalp, TrichoKare is the professional option - as validated by the numerous awards it has received.

Our Second Farm Stay Visit to KOREF Resort & the Monkies are still Loving it!

We first visited KOREF Resort 3 years ago and until today, it still ranks as one of the most FUN resorts in the eyes of the monkies.

Never mind that there is no air-conditioning or water heater in the rooms. Never mind if there is no WiFi connection. And never mind if there is no Kids Club or playgrounds.

Because who needs all of the above when KOREF Resort offers a kampung experience like no other?

Yes, Kahang Organic Rice Eco Farm (or KOREF, for short) Resort is a no ordinary resort. A little more than 2hrs by car from Tuas Checkpoint, the Eco Farm spans 260 acres of arable land at the fringe of the tropical Malaysian Rainforest Reserves. It is also the first and only certified organic rice farm in Malaysia that provides free and easy eco farm stays.

In fact, you can read all about our first time visit in my blog post review here: www.cheekiemonkie.net/2014/10/farm-stay-in-johor-malaysia-koref-resort.html

You will find all of the details that you need, including driving directions, lodging options, food and activities in the post. Go on, I'll wait.

Done? Okay, let's get started on our second visit to KOREF Resort in April this year then.

This time around, we went with my in-laws for a one night stay and as per last time, we chose to stay in the Floating Chalets.

Silly me forgot to snap photos of our room interior but it looks similar to the photos I posted during our last stay in my previous post. The room was clean and basic, with a queen-sized bed and 2 mattresses on the floor as well as a private bathroom.

3 years ago, we paid RM200 per adult and RM160 per child for the Standard Floating Chalet. I'm happy to report that the rates have not changed. We paid the same rates while Senior Citizens pay RM180 per person.

The only difference? 4 meals (tea, dinner, breakfast & lunch) were included in the rates previously but this time around, only 3 meals (tea, dinner & breakfast) were included.

Small matter actually.... especially to the monkies. Because they were all too eager to go bamboo rafting in the lake!

During our last visit, this activity was one of the highlights of our stay and they obviously still could not get enough of it. After all, where in Singapore can one enjoy a leisurely paddle on a bamboo raft? Definitely rustic at its finest.

Ash even gave his Grandpa a ride on the raft!

In case you are wondering, the water level of the lake is not that deep... as you can see from the photo below. I reckon it is about 70cm deep as the boys could walk through the lake effortlessly.

Just a fact that I learned from the owner of the resort: the source of the lake water is actually from Kluang's Gunung Berlumut so even though the water appears to be brown, it is clean and never stagnant.

Of course, the boys never forgot about the Water Obstacle Course too - which was free to use for all resort guests.

The course consisted of various obstacles over water, which the monkies needed no invitation to attempt to conquer!

Compared to 3 years ago when Ale was a tad younger (and shorter), she was more gung-ho about the obstacles and cleared every single one of them.

A new activity at the Obstacle Course has also been added since our last visit, and it was one that the monkies would do over and over and over and over again...

DOCK JUMPING!

Ale was initially apprehensive in following her brothers but over time, she managed to overcome her fears!

Okay, what really happened was I sneaked up behind her when she was standing on the dock, picked her up and flung her down into the lake. Obviously, she cried when she emerged from the water. But guess what, she willingly jumped from the dock many times after that! Goes to show all we need sometimes is a little push - whether we like it or not. LOL.

After all the exertions, it was time for tea time and the boys fondly remembered the yummy curry puffs they had during our last visit. Fortunately for them, the menu has not changed!

Dinner was also a hearty affair, with chicken, fried egg, okra (ladies' fingers) and mixed vegetables. The thing about the meals at KOREF is all of its ingredients are organic and fresh from the farm.

Come nightfall, the resort also organises a free jungle trek for guests which will allow them to see some luminous leaves in the jungle. The trek is suitable for young children and takes about 1.5 hours. We missed it the last time as the monkies were too tired. And we missed it again this time because it was raining! *WAIL*

Luckily, the weather cleared up the next morning.

There's something about the KOREF air that makes the monkies wake up darn early. Or maybe heading to feed the farm animals was attractive enough.

We had fried noodles and egg for breakfast. Somehow, I still missed the nasi lemak with organic brown rice during our previous visit though.

Before checking out, we had one final activity - rice planting.

We all sang that song before; about how planting rice is never fun? Well, the monkies experienced it first-hand for themselves and I can safely conclude that it is extremely tiring work!

Planting the rice saplings into the muddy fields is one challenge. The other is trying to maintain our balance when walking on the clayey mud!

KOREF Resort is simple kampung living at its best, with plenty of activities great for family bonding including a bustling wildlife like fishes, chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits.

It has that incredibly peaceful village atmosphere, and is really a different world compared to the hustle and bustle of Singapore.

No wonder the monkies are already plotting a return visit for the third time!
