It's (FREE) Slime Time: What to Expect at Nickelodeon Slime Cup SG 2017 this weekend

Getting drenched in icky and green SLIME may not be everyone's idea of having fun. But try telling that to the monkies... AND probably the thousands of kids and teens too!

Somehow, Nickelodeon has made it ultra cool for the young (and young-at-heart) to get covered in Slime. Well, it certainly helps that homemade slime is all the rage nowadays among the kids in schools!

This weekend, it is time to get all Slimy once again as Nickelodeon Slime Cup SG 2017 returns for its fifth edition at City Square Mall! Presented by Singtel TV, the two-day FREE-ENTRY event will be held on Saturday, 15 July and Sunday, 16 July 2017, and is set to be bigger and better than ever.

*15 July is reserved exclusively for Singtel customers across Mobile, TV and Broadband while 16 July is open to everyone.

This year, Nickelodeon is recruiting Super Slime Fans at the Slimiest integrated sports festival, so expect plenty of kid-friendly activities, from stage games and photo-taking sessions with beloved Nickelodeon characters, to crazy fun game stations - topped with a healthy dose of Nickelodeon’s trademark green Slime, of course.

The monkies attended last year's edition and as you can tell from the photos, they had loads of fun. Ale, in particular, was thrilled to snag a photo opportunity with characters from her current fave Nickelodeon show, PAW Patrol!

Psst... this year, my sources tell me that a new PAW Patrol member will be joining the photo-taking sessions. So if your kids are fans of SKYE, be prepared to watch them go wild.

Besides the photo-taking with characters, the monkies tried out the various game stations too. Top fave? It has got to be the one where they got to hammer each other at the Joust station. After all, it's not every day that they get to hit one another without being punished. LOL.

And what's a Slime Cup event without getting all Slimy, no?

Unsurprisingly, the Slime stations were the ones that saw the longest queues because it seemed that every kid wanted to be Slimed. Ditto for the monkies. In fact, they are such great fans of the green slime that they were overjoyed to get Slimed once again when we visited Nickelodeon Lost Lagoon at Sunway Lagoon last December!

Slime stations last year included a seated one where you had to pull a lever for the Slime to drop down and another one where kids whizzed down a slide into a pool of Slime. Check out all the fun the monkies had in the short clip below:

So what is in store for Slime Cup SG 2017?

1. For starters, the Slime stations get a major upgrade! I cannot exactly reveal many details because Nickelodeon wants to keep them as a surprise. But I have seen the artwork and let me just say the kids will want to try them out again and again... because which kid will not want getting sloshed with slime in a giant washing machine, sliding and gliding through slime, and showing off stealthy ninja skills in an obstacle course?

2. Can't get enough of Slime? Head to the Slime Salon where kids can deck out in Slimy face paint, or sparkly Shimmer and Shine face patterns, or selected character tattoo designs.

3. What is a Nickelodeon event without photo-taking sessions with your favorite characters? Take part in the stage games and win passes to pose with favorite Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and PAW Patrol!

4. Head to the Pine-App-le Pit where kids can try out the Nickelodeon Play app to view Nickelodeon episodes on the go, and discover endless mystery items and surprises.

5. Whatever you do, be sure to grab a Training Card before getting started on the training stations! Kids can collect a stamp upon completion of each game station. Gain a certain number of skill stamps and they earn the honor of being a certified Nickelodeon Super Slime Fan, as well as the chance to bring home some Slime in exclusive Slime Cup goodie bags (only for first 200 kids per day).

6. If you are heading down this Saturday, catch the All Star Initiation Ceremony at 12pm with performances by percussion group, MOTUS, and a rare appearance by SIX Nickelodeon characters on stage! Or if you prefer, join in the fun at the Closing Ceremony on Sunday at 6.15pm where there will be special character appearances and a group Sliming of Super Slime Fans!

7. Oh and here's a BONUS TIP: Kids can unlock a Mystery Gift by becoming a Nickelodeon Super Slime Fan! All they have to do is to complete certain tasks before heading down to the Slime Cup SG 2017 event. To find out more about the ‘Super Slime Fan Requirements Checklist’, download and print out copy of it HERE. Some of the top requirements include wearing orange to the Nickelodeon Slime Cup, bringing an extra set of clothes and downloading the free Nickelodeon Play app.

Already, the monkies cannot wait for this weekend! More so for Ash, because he missed it last year due to a school event. Guess it is time to get all Slimy once again then.... perhaps, I may join in the Slime fun this year too!

SEE YOU AT SLIME CUP SG 2017 THIS WEEKEND!

P.S. Do remember to bring a change of clothes and towel too. There will be wash stations where kids will be able to rinse off the Slime.

Advertorial

It is no secret that Singapore is a nation that is ageing rapidly. Did you know that one in four people here will be 65 or above by 2030? Personally, crossing the 40-year-old mark had made me realise that my body is not like what it was when I was in my twenties. I then look at my parents and also realise how much they have aged over the years.

And as age increases, it is inevitable that one's physical capabilities as well as self-care abilities gradually declines. Despite this, elderly people can use various types of assistive devices to help with daily activities and to maintain functional independence. Caregivers - like their kids - can also select the appropriate assistive devices base on their needs, so as to enable them to live safely, independently and happily.

So, what is an assistive device?

Assistive device is a specially-designed device to assist people who have difficulty to perform activities of daily living. It can be applied in different situations, like dressing, feeding, toileting, bathing, grooming, household activities, and mobility.

I believe assistive technology is going to become an increasingly important part of people's lives in future. After all, we will live longer and I think it is safe to say that we all want to keep functioning independently for as long as possible. I know I want that!

This is where Ministry of SilverLining (MoSL) comes into the picture. A locally registered company established since 2013 by a team of professional health care staff, it provides assistive living products and gadgets for the general and specialized public. The products allow users to maximize independence through the use of assistive technology which in turn, increases the quality of life  for both the care taker and receiver.

Browsing through its website, I saw plenty of products ranging from helping to cope with forgetfulness and wander prevention, to those that offer safety and mobility aid. I picked three that I think would suit my elderly parents - especially my Dad - the most and guess what? The monkies ended up being extremely fascinated with them!

28 Compartments Alarm Pill Box (S$128)

First things first, this is not your usual plastic pill box. For starters, it dispenses medications up to 28 times before it needs to be reloaded. What this means is it is good for one-time-a-day medication for up to 28 days, or four-times-a-day medication for up to a week!

And best of all, it comes with an alarm which reminds the user to eat his meds at the appropriate timings.

The setup procedure is straightforward - similar to setting the alarm function on a digital watch. At each medication time, the pill box flashes a light and rings an alarm until the user turns it upside down to pour the pills into the hand.

The pillbox can also be locked so that only those medications due to take can be accessed, thereby preventing overdose. This is very important as many elderly tend to forget they have already taken the medications.

In fact, it is so simple to use that the monkies were the ones who taught my Dad how to operate the pill box!

If you are looking for a reliable and excellent-quality pill dispenser that you can program for up to 28 days at a time AND comes with an alarm, the 28 Compartments Alarm Pill Box is one nifty gadget to have at home... thanks to its three main features:

- Users will take the correct medication: No taking of wrong medication anymore as the caregiver can use the pillbox to store and dispense pills conveniently.
- Take the right dosage: The pillbox comes with a lock to prevent overdose.
- Taking medication at the right time: The alarm reminds the user to take the medication at the appropriate timings.

Oh, and it sure helped that the pill box comes with pretty deep medication compartments too, so that more meds can be kept at any one time.

Talking Alarm Clock (S$33.90)

I guess the name of the product gave it away.

Talking clocks are fantastic tools for people suffering from cognitive impairments, memory loss, impaired vision and for the elderly in general. And as you see from the photo above, one of its main selling point is its large LCD screen - perfect for the elderly who may have poorer eyesight. But the greatest advantage going for it is the time can be told with a push of the 'TALKING' button.

With just one push, the time, temperature and humidity readings will be voiced out clearly. If you are one who is used to looking at the time when waking up in the middle of the night, this is one useful talking clock... especially if you wear glasses and don't want to be bothered with putting them on at night!

The Talking Clock also comes with an alarm feature as well as a countdown timer (useful for naps). Overall, the clock is easy to use buttons and with its talking function, it is no surprise that the monkies want it as their alarm clock to wake to during school term!

The Talking Clock comes in either English or Chinese versions.

Digital Talking Alarm Watch (S$24.90)

Similar to the Talking Clock, the Digital Talking Alarm Watch is speaks the time in a voice at the touch of a button which make it a great accessory to wear outdoors. It comes with digital time and date display on a clear LCD screen and includes hourly time announcements, alarm and snooze functions.

What I liked about the watch is not only does it sport a big LCD display, it is extremely lightweight. But most importantly, there are no complicated buttons or functions to set. Setting the time or alarm is relatively straightforward, with ease of use being an important prerequisite for any device designed for the elderly.

The Talking Alarm Watch comes in either English or Chinese versions.

Calorie Measuring Rice Spoon (S$79.90)

Of all the products, I think I need this the most. Its purpose is simple enough: it is a measuring tool for keeping tabs on one's rice calorie intake.

By scooping rice with Calorie Measuring Rice Spoon, I can now gauge exactly how much calories I am consuming with each scoop. The display on the rice spoon gives an accurate reading of the calories and weight in less than 3 seconds.

Obviously, this rice spoon will be extremely useful for people with dietary restrictions, like patients with diabetes.

At the end of the day, everyone wishes to be independent. And because independence means ease, comfort and dignity, MoSL strongly believes that technology can serve as a helping hand; allowing users to enjoy their independence and assist their caregivers at the same time.

KOOZA: An Amazing Spectacle for All Ages + GIVEAWAY

Media Invite

When it comes to a circus show, how do you qualify it to be a die-die must-see performance?

Is it by the number of death-defying acts, whereby if the performers miss their mark by a mere millimetre, they could actually die?

Or is it by the number of contortionist and aerial acts, whereby bodies are bent at mind-blowing angles and flipping higher with every mid-air twist?

Or is it by the number of times the show made you laugh uncontrollably, to the verge of tears?

As the monkies and I found out (to our delight), KOOZA delivers ALL of the above... and more.

Created by director David Shiner in 2007, Kooza tells the dreamy narrative of the child-like Innocent captivated by a colourful Trickster, who springs out of a box and introduces the Innocent to a bunch of amazing stuff.

And my oh my, what a whole lot of amazing stuff was packed into the 2-hour show!

There are ten acrobatic acts, all of which inspire nothing but awe. The opening act – a lively sequence of acrobatics sets the tone before a trio of hyper-flexible Mongolian contortionists sculpt and merge the human form into shapes that I never imagined to be possible.

Then came the double decker high-wire act which had wirewalkers perform jumps on a single wire strung high up between 2 poles. Not thrilling enough? The 'wow' factor was upped a few notches when they cycled across the wire!

But the biggest shrieks and gasps were reserved for the double wheel of death performance. Two performers rotate the giant wheel just by running - much like hamsters - but without any safety wires.

The spinning of the wheel gets more and more high paced and there are genuine screams of fright from the audience as the performers jump up high into the air with the wheel spinning before landing back onto the wheel. I lost count the number of times I had retrieved my pounding heart from my mouth.

As for the clowning, it is safe to say that everyone will be roaring with laughter. Kids will be particularly tickled every time the clowns appear - there is a peeing dog, confetti sprays, being hit on the head with a plastic steak and popcorn sloshed over the audience's heads. After all, the director began his Cirque Du Soleil roots as a clown and the humour clearly works.

And amid all the acrobatics and clowning, there is a genuine story behind KOOZA to be followed AND a lesson to be learnt. The Innocent is seen trying to get his kite to fly at the start of the show but to no avail. After the appearance of the Trickster who shows him all of the amazing acts, he manages to get his kite flying by the end of the show.

And this, perhaps was the biggest takeaway for the monkies after the show - that the possibilities are endless if we put our body, mind and soul to it. Who could have imagined that the human bodies could be pushed to the limits that we had seen in the show? I loved how the ending provided food for thought for the kids.

KOOZA is a return to a more traditional circus show. There is no hi-tech light projection or pyrotechnics; just good old acrobatic acts. And everything about it is BREATHTAKING. The monkies loved every single act and by the time the two hours were up, they were still wishing for more.

Just listen to the thunderous applause at the end of the show!

This is as perfect as a Cirque du Soleil show you’re ever going to see and frankly, this is the best one I have ever seen. Simply put, this is one Cirque that you cannot miss.

East vs West. Who's the best?

For far too long, the Eastern part of Singapore has been portrayed as the more hip and happening of the two. But surprise surprise - the Western part of Singapore is home to plenty of attractions as well. And if you have kids, you will be pleased to know there are loads of fun attractions to keep them occupied every weekend for more than 3/4 of the year!

So here they are: all 43 of them, segregated into different categories like Educational Experiences, Sport Activities, Animal Encounters, Farms, Nature, Indoor Playgrounds, Outdoor Attractions and even Unique Experiences. Places that you can explore in Western Singapore with the family, with more than 60% of them costing absolutely NOTHING!

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES

1. KidsSTOP

Billed as Singapore’s first science centre catering specifically for children between 18 months and 8 years old, KidsSTOP’s entire area comprises of a whopping 17 feature areas, carved into 4 main interactive zones: Imagine, Discover, Experience and Dream. Each area comes with a different theme that takes children through a discovery of both the natural and man-made world. Part Indoor Playground and part make-believe Fantasy-land, kids will get to imagine, experience, discover and dream about the world around them through a mixture of role-play and hands-on tinkering.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Just about everything appeals to kids because  the BIG difference about KidsSTOP compared to the original Science Centre is that all of exhibits are truly set up with the younger crowd in mind. There are no bombardment of difficult-to-grasp theories, just exhibits and contraptions that evoke the joy of playing and interaction in children. Also, if the main area seem to be too crowded for your child's liking, head to the inner rooms where the Critters, Kiddie Theatre and Math areas are. Chances are they will be much quieter, and are just as fun too.

Oh, and did I mention entry is FREE for all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents during off-peak days?

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Take a break from the hands-on activities by heading to the Omni-Theatre, Singapore’s only IMAX dome theatre, which features a 5-storey high dome screen that immerses you into the action. Depending on the shows at the time of visit, one can watch saber-toothed and woolly mammoths come to live on the massive screen, or go eye to eye with a menacing shark.

The adult dinosaurs, measuring 24m and 27m respectively, have been nicknamed Apollonia and Prince, while the baby dinosaur called Twinky is 12m long. 4. Former Ford Factory

Previously known as Memories at Ford Factory - or more recently, Syonan Gallery - the Former Ford Factory is the site of the surrender of Singapore by British forces to the Japanese Imperial Army. Re-opened in February and a national monument, its contents have been revamped and now features refreshed content and a new focus.

The exhibition space proper is broadly divided into three zones: Fall of Singapore: Outlines the events leading up to that fateful moment where British forces surrendered unconditionally to the Imperial Japanese Army in the Ford Factory boardroom, Becoming Syonan: Captures the diverse experiences of people during the Japanese Occupation and Legacies: Highlights the various legacies of war and Occupation in Singapore, from the political and social changes that arose and the ways we remember the war in Singapore today.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The gallery highlights a new area of focus for the exhibition by looking at the impact of the war and the Occupation years, including the immediate and longer-term legacies of this period on Singapore and the region. Although some of the displays may be somewhat complex for younger kids, there are a number of exhibits that kids can interact and learn more about Singapore's war hostory.

Test your knowledge of Singapore food, culture and customs in the quiz-show style Harmony Circle, or be part of Command HQ for a day and try out Singapore's first immersive 3rd Generation SAF game designed for the public. Learn traditional dance moves at the Digital Dance Studio, or challenge yourself to think smart and act fast at the Crisis Timescope exhibit to save Singapore from a bomb blast at an MRT station. There is even a 4D Simulator ride, movie theatre and Shooting Gallery where kids can put their shooting skills to the test using a modified SAR21 rifle or SIG SAUER P226 pistols.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Army buffs will be able to hop on the SAFTI bus and take a tour of SAFTI Military Institute. This bus tour brings you around the 98-hectare training ground for officers from Singapore's Army, Navy and Airforce. Head HERE for timings.

7. Reflections at Bukit Chandu

Bukit Chandu (Opium Hill) was the site of one of the last battles in Singapore. The battle lasted 48 hours and the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the Malay Regiment bravely but unsuccessfully attempted to defend the hill in the Battle of Pasir Panjang against Japanese in 1942. Housed in a restored black and white colonial bungalow close to the former battle site, the centre is a place for visitors to reflect upon Singapore’s heritage of heroism.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The centre combines first-hand accounts, personal artefacts, maps and historical footage to recount the brutal fall of Singapore. In particular, Reflections pays homage to the heroism of ‘C’ Company, 1st Battalion in their battles against the Japanese at Bukit Chandu. The story of 2nd Lieutenant Adnan Saidi is also highlighted as he had foiled Japanese attempts by disguising themselves as Punjabi troops and inspired his men to fight to the very end. Their courageous defence of Bukit Chandu cost the Japanese many lives.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES

9. Jurong West Aquatic Centre

Unless you are staying in the West, this swimming complex is not exactly in the most accessible location. But rest assured that your journey to the West will be well worth the effort, for there is a huge Savanna-themed Water Play area which comes complete with two slides, water fountains amid lots of jet water streams. For older children, there is the three-storey tube slide (Min. height of 1.2m) where one gets to slide through the snaking blue tube over the kiddy Water Play area and landing with a giant splash at the end of it all.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Deriving great joy in drifting along the Lazy River!

Address: 20 Jurong West St 93, Singapore 648965
Opening Hours: 8am - 9.30pm (Wednesday to Monday & Public Holidays) | Closed every Tuesday

10. Jurong East Swimming Complex

Jurong residents are extremely lucky when it comes to water parks because they have got two water theme parks to choose from! Jurong East Swimming Complex comes complete with a giant wave pool, lazy river, Jacuzzi with bubble jets, and a children’s water play area. But nothing can be compared to the three towering water slides that almost intertwine with one another. A bonus is the presence of KFC for those feeling famished after a day of fun.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The towering water slides, for sure!

Address: 21 Jurong East Street 31, Singapore 609517
Opening Hours: 8am - 9.30pm (Tues, Thur & Fri) | 6.30am – 9.30pm (Wed & Sat) | 2.30pm – 9.30pm (Sun)

Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident: Weekdays - Adults $1.50 Children $0.80 | Weekends - Adults $2, children $1
Standard Rate: Weekdays - $2 | Weekends - $2.60

11. Choa Chu Kang Swimming Complex

Choa Chu Kang’s Wave Pool ranks as one of the best that we have experienced. The waves were strong enough but yet still suitable for children to have fun all by themselves. For younger kids, there is an adjoining pool beside the Wave Pool with a small inlet for the waves to enter. As a result, the waves are gentler and more suited for younger kids who do not want to miss out on all the fun too! There is also a partially sheltered water playground, winding lazy river, Jacuzzi pools and the mandatory three-storey twirling closed tube slide (Min Height 1.2m) tucked away at the far end of the swimming complex. Feeling peckish? Fuel up at the cafe located within the swimming complex.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The Wave Pool definitely takes the cake, even for me.

Address: 1 Choa Chu Kang St 53 Singapore 689236
Opening Hours: 8.00am - 9.30pm (Tuesday to Sunday & Public Holidays) | Closed on Monday
Price:
Singapore Citizen/Permanent Resident: Weekdays - Adults $1.50 Children $0.80 | Weekends - Adults $2, children $1
Standard Rate: Weekdays - $2 | Weekends - $2.60

12. Amped Trampoline Park (Jurong East)

Amped Trampoline Park, the first of its kind in Singapore, is THE place to go to for the children to jump, bounce and hurl themselves against the wall. Well, not literally for that last point but close enough. You see, Amped Trampoline Park is home to 35 inter-connected trampolines which cover the floors and line the walls in Yo:ha at Jurong East. More than just for fun, it is also a serious workout—a 10 minute trampoline session supposedly equates to 30 minutes of cardio. Sure-fire way to expend those kids’ energy!

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Jump, Bounce. Jump, Bounce. Jump, Bounce. And repeat. Occasionally, some staff members will conduct impromptu lessons such as the techniques of doing a somersault while in the air as well. All ages are welcomed at the Trampoline Park. But if you have a younger kid, it may be more suitable to go on a Monday between 3pm and 7pm as the Trampoline Park is only open to those aged 11 years old and below then. NATURE

24. Pang Sua Pond

Built in the 1990s, Pang Sua Pond's main job is to collect rainwater runoff from the surrounding areas before the water is pumped to the Upper Seletar Reservoir for storage and treatment. Under PUB's Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme, the pond has been revitalised after a 30-month makeover where the drains, canals and reservoirs have been integrated with the surrounding environment to create beautiful community spaces for all to enjoy. Now, it is home to Singapore’s second largest floating wetland and boasts a boardwalk across the pond. And it is beautiful.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Located just a 10-minute walk from the Senja LRT station and beside Senja-Cashew Community Club, the pond features a 480m-long elevated boardwalk suspended at a height up to 7m above water, connecting residents to facilities such as the new 3G Wellness Centre and Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park. More interestingly, Singapore's second-largest man-made floating wetland system (the largest being Sengkang Floating Wetland in Punggol Reservoir) can be found at Pang Sua Pond.

25. Dairy Farm Nature Park

The 63-hectare Dairy Farm Nature Park serves as an alternative recreational venue to Bukit Timah Nature Reserve with two biking trails, with catering to the intermediate level of riding, and the other for beginners who wish to have the thrill of mountain biking. Be sure to end your biking trail at the south-western end of the park where the Singapore Quarry lies. Here, it has been transformed into a wetland habitat and boasts a magnificent view of the quarry.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: For something less relaxing, go on the Wallace Trail at Dairy Farm Nature Park. The 1-km long Trail is a relatively easy trek, taking visitors through a dense forested area which used to house a kampung community. In fact, you can still see signs of past ‘civilisation’ – remnants of walls of houses, and wells. You will also come across a number of little meandering streams with crystal clear water. Kids will have a field day treating their tiny feet to a cool dip, and trying to spot pond skaters skipping on the surface too!

Also, be sure to make a stop at the Wallace Education Centre, Singapore’s first field study hub for schools. Located in a restored cow shed, the Centre now houses the Wallace Environmental Learning Lab (WELL), as well as an interpretative centre, where visitors can learn about the changing landscapes of Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve through various exhibits.

The 36-hectare park offers a 2-hour trail that meanders through a well-established secondary forest and the chance to spot interesting species of trees and shrubs with their fruits and flowers. Climb the look-out points that reach more than 10 storeys high for stunning views of the quarry and do not forget to stop by the park’s entrance to marvel at the picturesque pond that lies at the foot of a high cliff wall.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The trail also takes you to a war memorial at the top of the hill. Formerly the site of two war memorials built by the Japanese to honour their dead soldiers, these memorials have since been destroyed, with the only remains being two pillars and 120 concrete steps leading to a transmission tower. A plaque has been placed at the foot of the stairs to remind visitors of the significance of this historical site.

OUTDOOR PLAYGROUNDS

33. West Coast Park

If the East Coast is the King of sandy beaches & cool sea breeze, then the West Coast Park must be the King of playgrounds. It has about SEVEN different types of play areas which cater to different age groups - from the toddlers to even teenagers. And standing at the core of the park is the Adventure Play Area with a giant spiderweb-like structure that allows kids (and adults) to scamper up to dizzying heights. The little ones do not get left out too - there are two non-sand areas which cater to the youngest of toddlers.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Scampering up the giant spiderweb-like structure is a no-brainer but there’s more – the Ninja Warrior-inspired obstacle courses and Flying Fox installations are a hit with any one seeking to challenge one’s agility.

34. Jurong Central Park

Besides sporting a huge 8-hectare area for kids to run themselves silly, Jurong Central Park is the first park in Singapore to have life-sized board-game features in a park - Snakes and Ladders playground and Ludo Garden. The pavement around the playground area is marked with numbers and visitors can move around just like on an actual game board by using the dice tower built in the park for game play. Rules for the Snakes and Ladders playground is just like its namesake board-game: landing on a ladder will see one climbing across the obstacle to reach a higher board space while landing on a snake will allow one to descend to a lower board space via a slide. It just could not get more fun than this!

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Snakes and Ladders playground which combined a board game with physical activity.

35. Keat Hong Quad

Sembawang has the Battleship play structure and now, Choa Chu Kang has its own Tank play structure. I can already foresee plenty of kids clambering on the tank to play! Internally, the tank has rope nettings within to encourage even more climbing and scurrying, something which I think kids will never say no to.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: It also is home to a Vertical Playground which looks entirely different from the rest of the other public ones. While the rest are encased in see-through grills, this new playground is covered with grey metal meshing and sports a colour different from the usual orange. The playground also has a swing netting, as well as a play area for younger children.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: The other highlight at the playground is the lookout tower which pays homage to the military lookout posts of yesteryear. Kids will be able to climb up via the rope ladder or rock wall, and whizz themselves down the fireman pole. It is pretty high though, so a huge dose of adrenaline rush is guaranteed. Older kids can scale a 10-metre high tree house and come whizzing down via a meandering tube slide. At the heart of the water play area, a large watering can with an active spray nozzle towers over the children, making all them drenched and deliriously happy. WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Haw Par Villa is divided into several areas, with each portraying stories and folklore based on famous Chinese mythological personalities, deities and legends. From the ‘Eight Immortals’, to ‘Jigong’, 'Journey to the West,', or 'Madam White Snake' - the diversity of exhibits at Haw Par Villa is mind-boggling and will be sure to fascinate the little ones. Take in the sights, sounds and of course smells at the Jurong Fishery Port where it really comes alive after midnight when all the fishing vessels start to unload their day's catch. Just the sight of so many different types of fishes and how the auction of fishes are done should be enough to offset the lack of sleep.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Fishing vessels and fish reefer boats calling at JFP usually unload their catch between 11pm and 2am for wholesale through the fish merchants so do head down at that time to catch the fervent action!

42. Star Gazing @ Omni Theatre

Let the littlies stay up late and look for stars at the Omni Theatre’s Star Gazing Sessions. Best of all, it is all free! This unique position opens up more vistas in the sky and allows visitors to view constellations in both the northern and southern celestial hemispheres.

Source
WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Essentially, the main activity is to take turns looking through the telescopes at various objects visible in the sky. 43. Decathalon (Joo Koon)

Okay, so this doesn't really count as an attraction or activity for kids but a) I say it does and b) I make the rules around here. Because when it comes to Decathlon, the kids somehow simply love shopping there. And even if we usually do not intend to buy anything, we almost always end up buying something! And the brand new outlet at Fairprice Hub in Joo Koon is Decathlon's largest megastore in Singapore yet.

WHY KIDS WILL LOVE IT: Kids love walking down the aisles and aisles of sporting products but most importantly, they enjoy trying out the various sporting equipment on display. In fact, the new store includes 10 experience zones - some of which are absent in the other 2 stores in Bedok and City Square Mall.

Website: www.decathlon.sg
Address: 1 Joo Koon Circle, #02-21. Fariprice Hub, Singapore 629117
Opening Hours: 8am - 10pm daily

SO WHO SAYS THE WEST ISN'T COOL???

Why Outdoor Play has always been Important for my monkies

Advertorial

If you have been reading my blog long enough, you will know that I am a strong advocate for experiential learning - the process of learning through experience - for kids. Which explains why I am always looking for places and activities in Singapore to keep my monkies occupied whenever the weekends roll along.

Because quite frankly, one of the most important things that Parenthood has taught me is the best place for a kid to learn is outside. For a child, it is always more fun to be outdoors because being outside is vital to a kid’s growth, and his/her emotional and mental development. Kids learn better through these experiences which cannot be replicated in the classroom.

Unfortunately for today's kids, the competition for attention with television, electronic devices and video games is tremendous. From playing on iPads to watching YouTube videos, kids tend to be spending more and more time indoors, leading to a more sedentary lifestyle.

The Importance of Outdoor Play

On the other hand, playing outdoors is a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. Outdoor play is important because kids really gain a sense of mastery and competency of skills from outdoor play.

When they do something like climb up a little dirt hill and try to find their way down on their own, they learn they can do this, which really adds to their sense of confidence. In the process, they also gain important physical and coordination skills.

And in my books, there is nothing quite like going on an aerial obstacle course for a session of holistic outdoor play.

Forest Adventure at Bedok Reservoir has recently upgraded and re-opened its Kids Course and Grand Course (its Junior Course is still under renovation at the time of writing), and I figured it was time for a re-visit once again... considering our last visit was 5 years ago when Ash and Ayd were 7 and 5 years old respectively, and Ale was barely walking!

Needless to say, the monkies were all excited to conquer the Kids Course. Can you tell that they were getting impatient from all the unnecessary (their word, not mine) photo-taking???

The Kids Course is specially designed for children aged 5 to 10 and who are least 1.1m tall. It consists of 2 levels and has 22 crossings including two awesome zip lines.

The course is all about ropes, nets, cables, zip lines and tricky steps... which to be honest, are not that tough at all.

Rather, it is the height as well as the ability to put one's faith in the safety harness that truly put your mental strength to the test. So for kids who are trying it out for the first time, that may be the biggest stumbling block.

Thankfully though, both Ash and Ayd had been through enough aerial obstacles to clear them effortlessly.

Again, I would like to think that bringing them outdoors throughout the years have had a positive impact in building up their self-confidence and mental resilience. They simply adore outdoor obstacles like these and will pounce on any chance to take them on.

Ale, on the other hand, was a little different... initially.

Granted that she did not have as many chances to grapple with similar obstacle courses as her older brothers, it was understandable that she was a tad apprehensive when she made her first move on the Kids Course.

She moved ever so gingerly across the planks, worrying that she may fall should she miss a step.

But kudos to her brothers, who encouraged and stopped to egg her on along the way.

And that is another benefit of outdoor play, no? Kids get to hone their social skills while playing outdoors too. They will be more likely to talk to different children, make new friends and in the process, it encourages kids to learn social skills and how to interact with other children away from adult supervision.

And all the encouragement that Ale received from her brothers really mattered when it was time to take the leap from the platform at the zip line.

And when she took that leap of faith, there was no stopping her.

Round 2 saw Ash and Ayd graduating to Level 2 of the course and while Ale really wanted to go it as well, the instructor asked her to complete Level 1 one more time so as to build up her confidence.

Once again, there was no stopping the boys.

To Ale's credit, she had improved tremendously during the second round... clearing the obstacles without breaking a sweat.

And then, something happened.

Whether it was overconfidence or purely a slip, Ayd missed a plank and fell. Obviously the safety harness came to the rescue but what was important is how we pick ourselves up after we fall. Ayd picked himself up from the plank and continued on, this time being more aware of the planks that he was stepping on.

And this also applies to life in general, doesn't it? Sometimes, we all need to fall before we are able to combat our own inhibitions and learn from it.

Round 2 was promptly done and dusted, and the instructor deemed Ale qualified enough to go onto Level 2 of the Kids Course.

To say she was happy like bird was an understatement. Look at her go!

I think it is safe to say that the monkies were truly upset when all three rounds of the Kids Course were completed. Because kids being kids, they are naturally drawn to active play outdoors. Being outdoors allows them to better appreciate the natural surroundings around them. Because the natural world is filled with beautiful sights, sounds, and textures, kids can learn much through their senses.

From seeing animals and insects and hearing birds singing and leaves rustling, to touching that rough tree bark and tasting dew from a leaf, it is OKAY TO GET MESSY. Because what's learning without a little dirt here and there... or even a tiny scratch?

Which is why Breeze - yes, that laundry detergent brand - has partnered with Forest Adventure to encourage outdoor play among kids. Breeze believes in celebrating exploratory, outdoor play... especially the kind that involves getting messy.

WHY?

For starters, because DIRT IS GOOD. And if you are worried about the first reason, here's the second: Breeze detergent provides tough stain removal in only one step, which means parents can give their children the freedom to experience life, have fun and get dirty, without having to worry about laundry!

And they mean it... because for every purchase of a 4.4kg / 4kg Breeze liquid detergent (with promo sticker), one kid goes for free with every full paying ticket! Terms and conditions apply. For more information, visit HERE.

Located at Gillman Barracks, Playeum is a museum without walls which hopes to inspire children through self-directed exploration and learning and in the process, establish a culture of meaningful and impactful play. The new exhibition is all about dreaming rooms, making spaces and creating places. Kids (and parents) will be able to experience the home as a place where many ordinary materials can have multiple purposes and support imagination, innovation and sustainability.

Interestingly, the spaces within the indoor playground - if you can call Playeum that - have been transformed into different ‘rooms’, each with a different purpose with different opportunities for the kids to explore, experiment and redefine. Whether it is imagining colours, materials and designs for floors walls and ceilings, to conjuring up art works with sand or recyclable materials, kids can stretch their creativity and imagination to the limit! With 8 New Dishes, there's Something Sizzling for Everyone at Pepper Lunch!

Advertorial

First things first, the monkies take their meals at Pepper Lunch VERY seriously. It is no joking matter when they find out that the wifey and I had gone for a meal there without them.

"What? You went without us??? How can like that??? So unfair!!!"

Drama to the max.

Yes, they love their Pepper Lunch so much that as long as there is one restaurant or a Pepper Lunch Express in a food court in the mall we are at, it is safe to say that would be their default choice. Resistance is futile, I have come to learn.

So imagine how delirious they were when Pepper Lunch came knocking and invited us to try their brand new dishes on the menu!

Actually, delirious is probably an understatement because I have never seen them looking forward to lunch so much!

Pepper Lunch is a leading DIY restaurant from Japan and its dining concept is truly unique. And that is perhaps the main reason why the monkies love dining at Pepper Lunch so much - the chance to immerse in the interactive multi-sensory experience of preparing one's food by mixing the freshly-prepared ingredients, experimenting with the addition of the signature sauces, and allowing the hot teppan to sear the meat to one's desired doneness.

And if you there for the first time, you cannot go wrong with its signature Beef Pepper Rice. You can request pepper not to be added if the kids cannot take spicy food yet. Pour in either the Honey Brown sauce, or the Garlic Soy Sauce, or a combination of the two, and mix well to enjoy! This is the monkies' fave dish from Pepper Lunch... but after tasting the EIGHT (!) new dishes, they are not so sure anymore.

Meat Trio Deluxe ($16.90)

Meat lovers will love this ultimate combo! And that would include Ash who is on a carnivorous streak currently. Juicy chickensteak? Check. Tender BBQ beef slices? Check. Flavourful hamburg steak? Check.

Drizzle the special BBQ sauce, flip the meat over the hot teppan to ensure that the meat is cooked, and it is all done! Needless to say, Ash practically finished nearly everything on his own... with me barely managing a tiny nibble. *sob*

Seafood Trio Deluxe ($17.50)

While Ash is a meat lover, Ayd is more of a seafood lover. Out of the eight new dishes, there was only one that caught his immediate attention. Because he definitely cannot turn down a hot platter of salmon steak, saba and succulent Japanese scallops!

Both the Meat Trio Deluxe and Seafood Trio Deluxe are served with a bowl of rice so for those with a larger appetite, these two platters sure provide great value and variety!

Salmon & Prawn Carbonara ($12.90)

Now this was THE highlight for the Diva!

I don't think carbonara needs any introduction but the unique feature of this Pepper Lunch dish is the fun lies in preparing the dish at your seat! Kids (and adults) get to mix in the carbonara sauce on their own. For a finishing touch, pour in the egg sauce to allow the sauce to thicken and it is all ready.

No words needed I suppose... just a look of satisfaction on Ale's face.

I stole a few mouthfuls (when Ale was not looking) and was pleasantly surprised that the salmon and prawns tasted really fresh. For $12.90, it is a pretty good deal - and kids get to have a bit of fun too!

Seafood Cheesy Risotto ($12.90)

If you are more of a rice person, then the new category to the Pepper Lunch menu might just be down your alley. The Seafood Cheesy Risotto boasts generous servings of salmon and prawns, risotto with corn atop it, and creamy sauce. All sizzling on a hot plate.

Pour in the cheesy sauce, mix well to ensure that each and every pearly grain of rice is coated with the delicious sauce. And when the cheese is melted, it is pure heaven!

Okay, so maybe the photo doesn't do the dish justice but the rice was all sticky and gooey... in a good cheesy way of course!

Or if you prefer your sauce to be tomato-based then go for this instead.

Beef Cheesy Risotto ($12.90)

Similar in set-up to the Seafood Cheesy Risotto but served with quality U.S. beef slices and tomato sauce instead, the Beef Cheesy Risotto is an upgrade for a heartier treat!

Mixed Katsu Toji ($13.90)

Are you a fan of Katsu-don? Then be sure to try the Mixed Katsu Toji which consists of golden fried chicken cutlet, ebi fry and beef slices... all sizzled together with scrambled eggs accompanied with toji sauce, together with a bowl of rice. All for just $13.90. Pretty value for money, if you ask me.

Chicken Katsu Curry Rice ($12.90)

Finally, I have come to MY favourite part of the meal. JAPANESE CURRY!

I love Japanese curry so I apologise in advance if I sound bias. Because Pepper Lunch's Chicken Katsu Curry Rice is simply da bomb! Golden fried chicken cutlet, mushroom and corn with Japanese Curry - that is classic comfort food right there.

And the best part? I got to savour it at my own pace, thanks to the sizzling Teppan which helps to keep the food warm.

Ebi Fry Curry Rice ($12.90)

If you prefer prawns instead of chicken but still love curry, the Ebi Fry Curry Rice is an excellent alternative.

With so many dishes to sample, it was a good thing my parents joined us for the meal too. And their verdict? They loved the risotto, meat and seafood trio dishes which goes to show that Pepper Lunch is a great dining experience for everyone in the family!

But we were not done. Not when Ayd chanced upon 'Beef Aglio Olio ($12.90)' on the menu.

And being a huge Aglio Olio fan as well, I guess he somehow found extra space in his tummy to accommodate this. How? Don't ask me.

And speaking of extra space in tummies, there is an old legend that speaks about having different stomachs for desserts, no?

In Ale's case, it must be true.

Pepper Lunch has relaunched its generous vanilla soft serve ice creams with 2 new flavours, Yuzu and Strawberry, on top of its usual Caramel and Choco Nuts. At only $1.90 per cup, it is definitely the best way to finish off a Pepper Lunch meal!

So the next time you are looking for a family-friendly and affordable dining experience with the family, why not pay Pepper Lunch a visit? The kids will love it. After all, it is not often that they are allowed to play with their food! LOL.

Heading down to Pepper Lunch and wish to pay even lesser for the food?

SIMPLE!

Pepper Lunch would like to offer an exclusive discount of 15% off any ala carte dishes to my readers!

Just quote “CHEEKIEMONKIES” when placing your order at any of the 7 Pepper Lunch restaurants in Singapore.
*Promotion valid till 30th September 2017.

Ayd Turns 11!

Today is Ayd's 11th birthday.

And with every monkie's birthday, I get incredibly nostalgic and even a little edgy. Because it genuinely and truly it feels like only a few months since they came into my life. Where on earth did all the time go???

So I make it a point to celebrate the annual birthdays of the monkies with a post for each of them because let's face it - there would not be a blog without them.  Well... although without them, I would also have less white hair.  And a lot more money.

But that is besides the point. The point is my second child is creeping towards teen-dom!

This past year, he has managed to retain all of his amazing qualities and grew a few more. Not only is he kind, goofy, lovable and generous with his love, he shows fierce determination when he fixates on a goal. But this past year, I rub my eyes and see a completely different kid. Someone who is more confident. Someone who has really grown into his own.

And we all know who deserves the credit for shaping him into the amazing young man he has become thus far. It's me, for cracking all those hilarious jokes throughout his growing up years.

Okay I’m kidding. It is Mummy. She deserves the credit.

He helps more around the house now, and continue to be a wonderful brother to his siblings. Especially to Ale... both of them can talk and banter throughout one entire car's trip, punctuating the atmosphere with their infectious laughter.

In short, he is truly a pleasure to be around. And I couldn't be more proud. I am forever grateful and blessed to be his Dad.

Happy Birthday Ayd!

We love you almost as much as you love noodles.

Sponsored Post

Drawing without a pencil? Editing your own DNA? Creating a key chain using metal stamping? Or how about making your own robots or drones?

Science and technology need not be all geeky and intimidating. In fact, it can be so very fun for the entire family... which is what the upcoming one-north Festival on 18 and 19 August 2017 is all about!

Taking place at the Biopolis @ one-north from 11am to 6pm on both days (18 & 19 August), the festival is jointly organised by  Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and JTC, and supported by Science Centre Singapore and Mediacorp. The festival is anything but intimidating, going by the sheer number of workshops, tours, open houses and interactive activities that will be taking place.

A celebration of research, innovation, creativity, and enterprise, visitors can expect to hear from and interact with scientists, innovators, media creators and entrepreneurs. Families can discover what it is that inspires them and how a passion for science, technology, creativity and enterprise is pioneering an innovation future for all.

Here are FIVE highlights NOT TO BE MISSED. And yes, they are ALL FREE!

one-north Festival Exhibition

Experience over 50 interactive displays featuring the latest innovations for Future Health, Future Living and Future Work discovered and made in Singapore and beyond. Innovators from A*STAR, the universities, industry and more will bring you the latest breakthroughs which shape and transform our lives.

Here, families can experience a soft material 3D bio-printer which can be used for organ printing and watch light displays that use LEDs to transfer data at high speeds. But more interestingly for kids, they get to interact with and control a collaborative robot to see how it responds to verbal commands and finger gestures and using Augmented Reality (AR)!. I think my monkies will love these!

Hands-on Workshops

For those wishing for a more in-depth experience, workshops allow for extended interactions that will provide hands-on engagement on a specific scientific or artistic topic. The good news is there are plenty of workshops at this year's festival. The bad news? All except ONE workshop are fully booked:

DRAWING WITHOUT PENCIL
Dates & Times: 18 Aug (2.30pm & 3.30pm) | 19 Aug (1.30pm & 2.30pm)

There are many ways with which we can do excellent drawings. However, using simple tools like 2B pencil or other conventional materials for convenience may result in stereotypical images. To develop curiosity and a creative spirit which is required in both art and science, participants are invited to go out of their comfort zones, experience making drawings using different tools and materials, and discover hidden drawing possibilities and qualities through various processes. Participants are encouraged to free their mind and have fun with these "drawings"!

BRAIN AND BEHAVIOUR WORKSHOP
Dates & Times: 18 Aug (2pm)

This fun and interactive workshop utilises hands-on activities to give participants insights into how emotions and behaviours affect the braind and how scientists learn about brain functioning and behaviour in the lab.

*Do note that limited slots available. So if you are interested, do register now at onenorthfestival.sg now!

If you are planning to find out how to ace the PSLE Science paper, I can guarantee you will not find your answer at the festival. But if you are looking to see how science and technology can transform our ways in ways we never imagined... and let the kids get involve through experiential learning, then the many activities at one-north Festival 2017 will more than serve their purpose.

Because one thing is evident - science need not be intimidating. In fact, it can be extremely fun and simple enough for all ages to understand!

Singapore Night Festival 2017: Top Picks for Families

$

Singapore Night Festival returns this weekend, and this year marks a milestone in the Festival's history because it is TEN years old!

Held over two weeks from 18 to 26 August August 2017 (7.30pm - 12am) right in the heart of the heritage district of the Bras Basah.Bugis precinct, this year will see a slight tweak to the format. This weekend, visitors can go on a trail around the precinct and view the various light installations while the big performance shows will be happening on 24, 25 & 26 August.

As the Festival celebrates 10 magical years, expect plenty of dazzling night lights and exhilarating performances, with previous crowd favourites brought back in a refreshing retrospective complete with loads of other activities for the family. So yes, for the next 2 weekends, there is a perfect excuse for kids to stay up late!

Unfortunately, I was unable to head down for the media preview as Ash will be having his PSLE Oral Exams this week (oh, the stress!) so I had to stay home to drill him show him my support. But thanks to my good friend, Belinda, she managed to capture the most eye-catching light installations at Singapore Night Festival 2017 so here are the top picks that families with kids should never miss.

First things first, Singapore Night Festival is essentially divided into 5 zones:

Zone 1: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE + SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT
UNIVERSITY (SMU) SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY

Zone 2: ARMENIAN STREET

Zone 3: CATHAY GREEN + SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

Zone 4: SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY

Zone 5: SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM (SAM) + WATERLOO STREET + NATIONAL
DESIGN CENTRE + CHIJMES + BRAS BASAH COMPLEX

Zone 1: NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SINGAPORE + SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT

Convolutions
by EZ3kiel (France)
National Museum of Singapore façade
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Designed as a visual poem, Convolutions links architecture, projection, lights, laser and music in a poetic and technological ballet completely transforming the facade of National Museum of Singapore into a contemporary show.

Check out a short snippet of the light projection show below:

The Tree That Blinked
by Karel Bata (United Kingdom)
Banyan Tree, outside the National Museum of Singapore
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

The Tree That Blinked is a series of portraits projected into a tree that toys with notions of identity, representation, and transformation. As the work moves and shifts with the wind, expressions seem to change, and the faces appear to undergo changes of age. The illusion can be compelling. Some folks think the leaves have been individually painted. Others that the tree must have been trimmed to the shape of a head!

Nostos: Records of the Self
by Aesop (Singapore)
National Museum of Singapore, Gallery 10
18 – 26 August 2017 | 10am – 12am

To mark Singapore Night Festival’s tenth anniversary, Aesop offers a scent experience for the occasion. Visitors can use their nose to navigate the space, imprinting the aroma to memory for future recollection. The title takes inspiration from the Greek word nostos, meaning homecoming. When paired with álgos, meaning ache, the words form ‘nostalgia’ – a feeling for which scent is an evocative trigger.

Tessellations of Time
by LiteWerkz x 3M (Singapore)
National Museum of Singapore, Main Ground
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Tessellations of Time is inspired by the precious bridges between people and time, in celebration of the 10 successful years of the Singapore Night Festival. Invoking the fluctuations of coded lights and digitally fabricated pods, the work strives to create a conversation as people enter and interact with their own interpretations of the past, present and future.

The Flower of Life and the Infinite Self
by Starlight Alchemy (Singapore)
Stamford Green
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

The Flower of Life and the Infinite Self consists of two symbiotic pieces: a geodesic bamboo dome with a tessellated fabric roof resembling the flower of life, and interior walls mounted with geometrically arranged convex mirrors that form dynamic reflections of visitors as they walk around the dome. Drawing inspiration from Buckminster Fuller and M.C. Escher, this installation will present a different persona during the day and night, providing visitors with a colourful meditative atmosphere under geometry and reflections.

Zone 2: ARMENIAN STREET

The bulk of the activities will take place on the weekend of 24-26 August, and will feature happening festivities like a street carnival, Peranakan Party, music performances and even Open Houses at both Peranakan Museum & Singapore Philatelic Museum!

Secrecy
by The Rat Pack (Singapore)
Armenian Church
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Secrecy brings cool light to the hallowed grounds, a nod to the patron saint of the Armenian Church: St Gregory the Illuminator. The garden is bathed in a spectrum of calm neon tones with an ambient soundscape in the background. Be ready to be transported to a quiet space of futuristic magic and serenity within the church grounds.

ZONE 3 – CATHAY GREEN + SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

No light installations in this zone, but there are performances lined up in the weekend of 24 - 26 August. So check back next week!

ZONE 4 – SINGAPORE MANAGEMENT UNIVERSITY (SMU)

*Note: Festival Village is only operational from 24 to 26 August 2017 (6pm - 12am).

Dream City Window
by Untitled Project (Singapore)
SMU School of Information Systems
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Experience art and collaboration in an interactive projection. Dream City Window is inspired by the heart and soul of Singapore’s culture, with user-generated interactive visuals derived from abstractions of our evolving environment. Walk alongside the work, bring it to life, and watch your digital silhouette on screen interwoven with abstractions of Singapore’s culture.

ZONE 5 – SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM (SAM) + WATERLOO STREET + NATIONAL
DESIGN CENTRE + CHIJMES + BRAS BASAH COMPLEX

Personally, I think this is the most fun zone of the lot!

Les Hommes Debout (The Standing Men)
by AADN (France)
Singapore Art Museum
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Behind the interactive art installation of 16 human-sized figurines, The Standing Men call out
to those strolling by to initiate a dialogue with them. Flashes go off in an echo, colours
change… the statues come to life in an unpredictable way, transforming the entire installation
into a ballet of light. The installation presented at the Singapore Night Festival features voices
and emotions of inhabitants in Bras Basah.Bugis, who were recorded in August 2017.

Phosphene
by Praxis+ (Singapore)
National Design Centre, Design Gallery I
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

This is the most instagrammable light installation of the lot! A winding cavern of twinkling lights and unexpected turns, Phosphene invites visitors on a journey of inspiration and surprises, sparked by the beautiful moments of the Singapore Night Festival’s decade-long journey. The work celebrates the memories and experiences of the Festival and those who have been part of it through the years.

Flock
by KMA (United Kingdom)
National Design Centre
18 – 26 August 2017 | 7.30pm – 12am

Step directly into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s 1876 ballet, Swan Lake, with Flock (2017). An immersive space, it combines light, sound and projections with live motion tracking technology. Visitors are placed within the corps de ballet, where they can explore the narrative from a unique perspective.

Light Up The Beat!

READY TO HEAD DOWN TO SINGAPORE NIGHT FESTIVAL 2017?

HANG ON... Here are a few tips for parents who are thinking of bringing the kiddos down:

- If you have limited time, stay at Zone 1 or Zone 5 where the bulk of kid-friendly activities are. There are some activities happening within National Museum of Singapore too, so pop in for some air-conditioned comfort should it get too hot outside.

- The Festival Village (Zone 4) is directly opposite National Museum, which makes it an ideal location to pick up some food and drinks. Musical performances happen regularly at the Festival Village stage too. But do note it will only be opened next weekend.

- The light installations and wall projection shows are happening throughout the week, including weekdays. If you wish to avoid the crowds, it makes sense to head down on weekday nights. Do check the schedule beforehand though - most of them start at 7.30pm and end at midnight.

- For past editions, we parked at the SMU car park which charges $3 per entry after 6pm. The location is pretty central to the main bulk of the activities happening at the Night Festival.

Next weekend will see loads of performances at the various zones so do head back and see which are the ones that you and the kids will not want to miss!

24, 25, 26 August 2017 | 8pm – 8.30pm, 10.30pm – 11pm

This is THE headline act of Singapore Night Festival 2017.

GLOBE is a child’s perspective of the real world, where the central character creates a domain that transcends religion, esotericism and cultural traditions.

Using circus techniques, pyrotechnics, and video projection to create the visualisation of liberty and the joy of flying, GLOBE is an alienating, fairylike spectacle full of symbolism. GLOBE is presented in and around a large sphere. Props are exposed and accompanied with sound from all sides, reminiscent of a pop concert. The audience is, thus, literally part of the fantasy world created by Close-Act.

TIPS TO SURVIVING SINGAPORE NIGHT FESTIVAL 2017

Okay, so you are ready to head down with the kids this weekend. But before you do so, here are some handy tips that will make your experience a better one.

1. KNOW WHERE TO GO
It is always good to prep yourself by getting familiar with the area before going down. Download the festival map below or head to Singapore Night Festival's website to plan your itinerary for the night.

If you have limited time, stay at Zone 1 or Zone 5 where the bulk of kid-friendly activities are. There are some activities happening within National Museum of Singapore too, so pop in for some air-conditioned comfort should it get too hot outside.

The Festival Village (Zone 4) is directly opposite National Museum, which makes it an ideal location to pick up some food and drinks. Musical performances happen regularly at the Festival Village stage, with showsbeing staged at The Pit area too.

2. HEAD TO ZONE 2: ARMENIAN STREET
For a full blast of the Night Festival festivities, head here where the bulk of the activities will be taking place. The 3 nights will feature happening activities like a street carnival, Peranakan Party, music performances and even Open Houses at both Peranakan Museum & Singapore Philatelic Museum.

2. DRESS COMFORTABLY
It is going to be crowded, hot and humid so be sure to dress in comfortable clothing and wear a pair of comfy shoes to prepare for the walking exercise!

3. CARRY LIGHT
For some major shows like GLOBE, there will be security checks before entering the viewing area. So if you do not want to get stuck in the long queues, head down WITHOUT a bag and you will be able to breeze through the express lane.

4. HYDRATE YOURSELVES
For sure, it will be humid so remember to let the kids drink enough water throughout the night. Beer will suffice for the adults, I reckon.

HAVE FUN!

The Magic behind Cars 3: Touring Pixar Animation Studios + Giveaway

$
0
0

Back in May this year, I did something I had never done ever since Ash was born 12 years ago - travelling solo. Because I firmly believe that memories are better forged when travelling together as a family. Well, that was until Disney Singapore came knocking and offered me the chance of a lifetime.

Yes, I was flown to San Francisco, USA to attend a media junket for the new Pixar animated movie, Cars 3! To top everything off, I was the only representative from Singapore and got the chance to step inside the famed Pixar Studios for a guided tour. For sure it was a packed 2 days - excluding a 24-hour flight EACH WAY - but it was well worth the experience.

Okay... so in case you did not know, I am a HUGE Pixar fan. Toy Story in 1996 made me a fan, and I have not missed a single Pixar animated movie since. Which explains my caption below when our bus first wheeled into the 22-acre Emeryville compound.

A post shared by Kelvin Ang (@cheekiemonkies) on

Figuratively, not literally of course.

As I walked through the lined trees entrance, I can't help but feel a sense of creativity, fun and excitement. The first thing that came into view was the famed Luxo Jr. lamp and Luxo ball.

I was then ushered into the main Pixar Animation Studios building, which is named The Steve Jobs Building.

This is the core of the campus. If you didn’t know, Steve Jobs was the primary investor and CEO of Pixar many many years ago.

And so, this was it. With trembling hands, I pushed the doors open and stepped into Pixar Animation Studios for the first time. the short video below will give you a good idea of its main interior. And yes, I muted the sound because I squealed. LOL.

The atrium lobby is filled with life-size versions of some of Pixar’s most popular characters. So as you could probably guess, I wasted no time in grabbing photos with all of them.

How many can you recognise?

The Pixar campus is truly a place of wonder. And here is an interesting fact that I learnt: the campus is laid out like a human brain. And because each side of the brain is responsible for various functions of the whole, the left side of the building represents the technical side while the right side is home to the creative offices.

And both sides are joined by a main area that was designed for people to intentionally mingle and collaborate. This includes ALL of the restrooms, the Pixar cafe and kitchen, and the mailroom.

An Awards Cabinet filled with the many awards and accolades that Pixar had garnered over the years was also on full display in the main atrium - a reminder of the greatness that everyone helps create in the studios.

It was my first time getting so close to an Oscar statuette! Too bad I could not touch it. A case of so near and yet so far.

Oh, and there was the Pixar Store too. A place where I had unintentionally spent a substantial amount of money at.

How not to, especially when there are tons of Pixar merchandise that are sold exclusively in the store???

I then got a tour of the restricted areas, where photography was understandably not allowed. One of the areas included a huge gallery which consisted the Cars 3 storyboard. And with it came a bunch of spoilers, which is why no photos were allowed.

But trust me when I say a magical world of imagination exists.

But what I can show you is the numerous Easter Eggs that are present in the Studios because walking through Pixar Animation Studios is like watching a Pixar cartoon: There are Easter Eggs everywhere!

The silhouettes of Woody and Bo Beep are obvious enough - they're found at the entrances of washrooms. Buzz can be found embedded in the flooring around the studios while even the design of the wall incorporates a Pixar influence. In the top right hand corner photo, can you tell that the pattern is made up of repeating images of Luxo Jr, the iconic lamp mascot of Pixar???

And speaking of ingenuity, Pixar also likes to refresh the main space with art from its current promotional push. Cars 3 is obviously the big movie that will be hitting theatres so the entire place was adorned with Cars 3 artwork.

But it wasn't all play and no work for me at Pixar Animation Studios, you know. I had the chance to sit through half a day's worth of presentations by the Cars 3 animators and supervisors, and got a glimpse of the hard work that went into the creation of the movie. After that, I had FIVE interview sessions with the various creative team members, including Cars 3's director and producer. And I even got them to answer a few of the monkies' questions!

No doubt it was tiring, but it was fascinating to hear how the entire movie progressed from the storyboard to the big screen. And I would not trade the experience for anything else.
But more on all of that to come in a subsequent post. For now, what say you to a CARS 3 GIVEAWAY?

Thanks to Walt Disney Singapore, I have EIGHT Cars 3 vehicles to give away! Each lucky child will receive 2 cars each.

Tampines Eco Green is unlike any other nature park we had visited in Singapore. For starters, it is a sprawling 36.5-hectare ecological park resembling a savannah with marshlands, secondary forests and freshwater ponds.

Not only that, the park was designed with minimal intrusion, leaving most of the land untouched and in its original state. In fact, the park is NOT lit at night - so go before 7pm! - so as to minimize disturbance to its wildlife inhabitants.

But if you are looking for playground structures to keep the kiddos occupied, there are NONE here. What is present in the park is plenty of flora and fauna to keep the little ones fascinated. And the main difference here compared to other nature parks is the footpath is carpeted with Manila Grass rather than concrete or gravel, making it a unique walking experience.

Besides making for a great sensory experience outing, most of the park's original landscape has been retained, with even dead trees transformed into park benches and shelter stops. No wonder the monkies remarked that there was something different about Tampines Eco Green.

So off we went to explore!

The park offers three trails weaving through the forest: Diversity Trail, Forest Trail and Marsh Trail. In total, one loop of the park covers 3km, with a walking time of between 1.5 to 2 hours. The terrain is flat throughout, making it extremely easy for kids.

Our journey began at the shelter near the main entrance of the park. Stretching 1.2km, the Diversity Trail offers an easy walk with views of numerous flora and fauna.

Here, the dense woods flanked both sides of the trail with tall trees towering as we trekked along the green path.

We stopped by the freshwater pond and I have to say the view was amazing. I never knew we had such a picturesque spot right here in Singapore!

At first sight, the pond did seem to be devoid of life, but as we took a closer look, we were all taken aback by the sheer number of life forms living in and around the pond. Butterflies, dragonflies, tiny fishes, tortoises, pond skaters... the monkies spotted them all.

Oh, and do look out for the many bird hides made of twigs and branches too. A bird hide allows you to camouflage so that you can observe wildlife, especially birds, at close proximity without alarming the creatures with your presence. Considering the large variety of birds in this park – 75 different recorded species (!) – I think this will be extremely useful if you are into bird watching.

We did spot a fair of amount of birds too, with some brightly-coloured ones that I have never even seen before. Luckily, there are ample signs scattered throughout the trail which offered nuggets of information of the different type of species one could see in the park.

The boys needed no signs to identify the Flame of the Forest tree though. They were taught in school that the tree relies on explosive action as a means of seed dispersal and there is simply nothing like seeing Science and Nature up close. In fact, the brothers conducted an impromptu Science lesson for their sister too!

We then headed to Marsh Trail which is the shortest trail at 0.8km.

Here, broad, shallow canals called vegetated swales can be found here. These natural drains help to channel excess surface runoff away from the ground. The sides of the swale are gently sloped and filled with plants and small stones. The gentle slope and plants slow down the speed of the flowing water. This helps reduce soil erosion. They also serve as a natural form of filter before the rainwater reaches the water catchment ponds.

Rounding up our trail adventure is the 1km Forest Trail where we felt a drop in surrounding temperatures as the trail became shadier.

Trees border the trail with lush canopies stretching ahead, making it the perfect end to our park exploration.

We had no issues with mosquitoes but it doesn't hurt to slap on some insect repellent too.

Should nature calls, rest assured there is a toilet near the entrance of the park (off Diversity Trail). But even if you do not have any urgent need to do so, I strongly advise you to pay it a visit.

Why? That is because the toilet is an eco-toilet, the first of its kind in Singapore’s public parks! It is a waterless, chemical-free system that converts human waste using bacteria and wood shavings into compost. How cool is that???

But don't worry about any foul smells as the eco-toilet is odour-free, thanks to its good ventilation system. Biodegradable cleaning agents are used to keep the toilet clean and hygienic too. The monkies were definitely intrigued!

All of us thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Tampines Eco Green. Initially, I was expecting the usual nature experience found in other parks like the Botanical Gardens. But the park is more than that, with its tall trees, bird hides, and ponds.... all against a rustic greenery backdrop. It is true when they say that beauty grows when nature is left alone without man's interference.

We saw monitor lizards, birds, insects, touched plants, examined flowers and fruits, followed butterflies on their search for nectar, picked up bird feathers from the grass, enjoyed the shade as we trotted along and of course, enjoyed each other's company. One of the most educational outings we had in recent memory, if you ask me!

Personally, I feel Tampines Eco Green is severely underrated. It is perfect place to head to with the kids as it allows them a chance to appreciate the animal and plant biodiversity in their natural setting. Compared to other parks, it is so much less crowded with its terrain being extremely easy for kids to trek.

And should the kids still have energy to expend after that, there is a playground located just directed opposite Tampines Eco Green (across Tampines Ave 9) at Sun Plaza Park.

STORY IS KING.

That is the mantra at Pixar Animation Studios, where they tell stories in ways nobody else can. From Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Inside Out, to the impending release of Coco this November, Pixar has the knack of coming out with heartfelt stories that resonate with both adults and kids.

But what really goes into a Pixar film? That was what I got to find out when I visited Pixar Animation Studios back in May, where I sat down with some pretty important people responsible for Cars 3.

No, not Bing Bong.

We are all familiar with Lightning McQueen. But in Cars 3, he is not a rookie anymore. Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lightning McQueen finds himself pushed out of the sport he loves. "He's struggling with the kind of issues athletes face later in their careers," said producer Kevin Reher. "Do you go out on top or fight till the end?"

According to director Brian Fee, while Lightning is still the same confident, determined and fun-loving race car, his confidence is being tested by new rookies on the track. "When we first met Lightning, he was a young rookie - a superhero," said Fee. "He had his whole life ahead of him. And while he has done well since we last saw him - winning five Piston Cups, he is not a young hotshot racer anymore."

Director Brian Fee (left) & Producer Kevin Reher (right), Cars 3

For Cars 3, the filmmakers consulted National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) veterans. "We did a lot of research," said Fee. "We looked at athletes in other sports but really focused on NASCAR drivers. They start at such an early age and their lives are centered around driving. We even talked to a sports psychologist who explained that many of these drivers don't know anything else."

Neither can Lightning McQueen. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win. Cruz is a talented trainer and is all about technology who knows how to create winners on simulated racetracks. But Lightning is old-school, and realises he might have to travel with Cruz on a different road to success.

Lightning decides to return to his roots - recalling the wisdom imparted on him by his beloved mentor, the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet. Ultimately, he turns to his coach's coach - Smokey, who was there during Doc's heyday - for guidance and inspiration, and eventually realises the power of mentorship. The filmmakers looked to their own lives to tell a story too. "If you are really trying to share an idea with an audience as a filmmaker, you have to feel it," said Fee. "So being a parent became my main resource to find and understand the emotion in the film."

"Like a lot of us, I struggled to find enough time to explore my passion projects - we all have responsibilities at work and at home that don't leave enough spare time," continued Fee. "then one day, I spent a couple of hours painting a simple picture to teach my daughters about art. Something changed after that. I found the experience so much more rewarding than I ever imagined. That's what we are trying to communicate in this movie with the relationship between Lightning and Doc."

The nod to Doc and his impact on Lightning's career is part of what brings audiences back to the feeling of the original 'Cars'. "Audiences connected with the first 'Cars' film in a very special way," said Jay Ward, creative director for the 'Cars' franchise. "They saw the heart in Radiator Springs; they felt the emotion in the relationship between the characters."

CARS 3 REVIEW

I caught a 40-minute preview of Cars 3 when I was at Pixar Animation Studios and I loved what I saw. And I think my excitement spilled over to the monkies too, because they were all hyped up when we finally attended the Singapore Premiere of Cars 3.

And the TL;DR review? All of us loved it! In fact, I found Cars 3 to be so so so much better than its previous 2 instalments.

At its core, Cars 3 is about finding fulfilment in what one does, day in and day out. But more than that, the characters learn key life lessons with plenty of positive messages that parents can turn into learning moments with the kids: the importance of mentorship; the idea that that no matter how old you are, you always have more to learn; and nothing should stop you from reaching for your dreams regardless of gender or appearance.

I particularly loved Cruz's - who is Ale's fave character by the way - story. Training others isn’t the career she dreamed of as she too had wanted to be a racer. But along the way, she gave up the opportunity to fulfil her big dream because “The other racers looked nothing like me. It made me feel like it was a world in which I didn’t belong.” Cruz’s story emphasizes the way that women, particularly young women, internalise external messages about not only what they can and can’t do, but who they can or can’t be.

So yes, Cars 3 sure has plenty of positivity and motivation for not just little boys but for little girls as well!

But more than that, the greatest lesson I learnt from Cars 3 was something related to parenting. Cruz was told by her parents from a young age that she was not suited for racing and being a trainer was probably best suited for her. I have to admit, I sometimes do helicopter my monkies... perhaps too much! I worry about them and am afraid that one day they will choose a career or hobby that will not be 'ideal'. Hence, I feel the need to protect them and persuade their decision to change. But as Cruz showed in the movie, your achievements are only hampered by the size of your dreams.

If you are looking for a fun and moving movie with life lessons to discuss with your kids post-movie, I cannot recommend Cars 3 enough.

Oh and whatever you do, DO NOT be late for the movie because there is a Pixar short film before Cars 3. Titled LOU, it is about a character composed of numerous lost and found items and deals with childhood bullying. I don't want to give anything away but let's just say the short will take you through every roller coaster emotion you have in less than ten minutes, as only Pixar can.

Ash Levels Up his English Composition Skills with The Learning Lab

Advertorial

THIS IS IT.

Less than 4 weeks to the start of the Primary School Leaving Examinations (or more fearfully known as PSLE) Papers.

That's right, exam fever is in the air and for Ash, the September School Holidays take on a slightly more different meaning than previous school holidays. It's revision time and whether I like it or not, the pressure is on for both parent and child.

But if you had read my previous post on Ash's PSLE journey, you will know the wifey and I have decided to change our mindset when it comes to approaching the big exam. Instead of just imploring Ash to try his best all the time, we have focused on something more tangible — putting in a reasonable amount of effort in his school work. So all this while, the wifey and I have been taking turns to sit down with Ash for 20 to 30 minutes every weeknight for revision.

And it is working pretty well so far.

Except for one problem.

How does one teach English Composition writing???

I am sure there is a method somewhere out there but for the wifey and I, we are both clueless when it comes to coaching him on essay writing. And it is an area of concern because for Ash, his main weakness in English has always been in Composition... which typically translates to a puking blood session for me whenever I try to coach him. Sigh.

Fortunately, for my health's (and sanity's) sake, The Learning Lab's P6 English Composition Excellence workshop came to the rescue!

The 10-week workshop covers Paper 1 of the English Paper — continuous writing and situational writing.

The former will impart techniques for different elements of writing, such as plot planning, scene setting, characterisation, development of gripping climaxes and compelling conclusions for the narrative; and brainstorming and organisation for the expository. Students will also learn about advanced sentence structures and punctuation to enrich their writing. As for situational writing, students will be exposed to different genres and focus on tone and register.

In one of the classes that I sat in briefly, the teacher used the 5 different emotion characters from the movie 'Inside Out'to let the students understand the importance of including emotions into one's essay. Very novel indeed!

I could tell that Ash was enjoying the classes, which is a huge surprise considering the fact he let out a loud groan when I first told him he was going to attend the workshop. I suppose the interesting nature of the classes played a part, and he remarked that he had picked up plenty of useful tips and phrases to use for his English Composition.

And I think the impressive library collection at The Learning Lab helps too. Students are free to borrow books on a weekly basis!

Mid-way through the workshop, Ash sat for his Prelim English Paper and his English Composition marks saw an improvement as compared to his earlier composition tests. I read through his essay and saw that he had made a genuine effort to incorporate some of the writing techniques and phrases he learnt at the workshop. Fingers crossed, but I think it can only get better!

And so, we have now come to the final lap... the final uphill trudge. Truth be told, the wifey and I often feel we are the ones dragging Ash up the hill. But we are also conscious not to overly subject him to extreme pressure. So if you have a child who is sitting for the PSLE this year, take heart that you are not alone.

Here are some tips to get your child into the right frame of mind:

1. More understanding and Less memorising

Our brains have a limited capacity to cram information in a short time. Rather than trying to spot questions, memorise and regurgitate, take the time to understand the concept of the study subject. In this way, the brain begins to form an internal mind map and revision becomes more effective.

2. Setting a revision rhythm

Take some time every day to do revision work in batches. For example, get your child to recall new topics he or she learnt the next day, then again a week after the first lesson. This ensures the information learnt is stored in his or her long-term memory.

3. Set realistic milestones

If your child has not been scoring A*, it may be a little far-fetched to expect him to do so for PSLE. For Ash, he has been consistently getting a 'B' for his English so for his Prelims and PSLE, I have set him the target of achieving a low 'A'. He came pretty close to achieving that for his English Prelim, missing the 'A' grade by an agonising 0.25 mark. Well, the good news is he now knows it is attainable.

Well, at least the end is in sight so all the best to Ash and every P6 student! Fight the good fight and be a good finisher!

P.S. I am sooooooo looking forward to the end... until it happens all over again next year with Ayd. but let's take things one step at a time ,shall we? :)

No more scorching sun... Diggersite @ Yishun Reopens at a Cooler Spot!

Media Invite

Earlier this year, Diggersite shifted from its East Coast Park premise to ORTO in Yishun. And for the past 2 months, the site has been closed. Well, it has since re-opened earlier this month, NOT at its same spot but just right beside its previous location.

I'll spare you the technicalities but just know that Diggersite is now not part of ORTO but part of Ground-up Initiative instead. It is directly opposite the open-air carpark at ORTO, so you cannot possibly miss the bright yellow container and forklift!

For those who haven't been to Diggersite, it offers both adults and kids a realistic experience in operating smaller scale construction machinery like excavators. Yes, they are no toys but REAL machinery!

Compared to the previous location, the construction vehicles cannot be seen from its main entrance. Just walk on in and you will see a huge container - future plans for it include converting it into a cafe and/or party room for birthday parties.

As you walk further down the path, a payment counter comes into view and this is the place where kids can also put on the complimentary safety helmets and vests before venturing to the vehicles.

Once that is done, the real excitement begins!

One HUGE advantage of this new location is the ample amount of shade for all the stations! A common grouse among both parents and kids of the old location was the lack of shelter and it can get extremely hot in the afternoon.

We were there during mid-afternoon and I can happy to report that the many trees did a fantastic job in keeping the entire area so much cooler. Oh, and those are rambutan trees by the way. Maybe got free fruits when it is rambutan season? LOL.

As for the stations, all but one of the previous stations remain the same. In total, there are 6 stations.

1. SCOOP STATION

The name sounds straightforward enough; kids are tasked to scoop sand using the excavators into a bucket.

2. WRECKING BALL STATION

This station involves knocking over plastic bottles using a ball attached to the arm of the excavator.

3. BALL PIT STATION

This station features 2 diggers with 2 different tasks. The above digger lets kids transfer the balls onto a slide while the below one allows kids to grab colourful balls using a giant claw and place them into the tires.

4. LOG STATION

If you have older kids aged 7 and above, they will enjoy the 2 excavators here... simply because they require more skill.

Rather than scooping up sand, they are tasked to operate the excavators to complete certain goals. Like the Log Loading station where they have to pick up logs using the machine and place them into the wheelbarrow.

Or the Log Bowling station where they will get to release a log down a ramp and attempt to knock over three 'bowling pins'.

5. TOWER CRANE STATION

Now this is something extremely novel for the kids! Kids (or parents) will be able to attract metal boxes using an electromagnet in a mini tower crane.

All they have to do is to transfer the metal boxes from a wooden pallet and place them in the individual rubber tyres. It's not as easy as it looks!

6. COAL MINE CART RIDE

Visitors will be able to hop onto the mine cart and go on a ride around the compound. The cart ride takes approximately 10 minutes.

There used to be a Forklift station too, where kids will be able to drive around in a forklift. But at the time of writing, the forklift is under maintenance and the staff have no idea when it will be available.

But at least there is still the Sand Pit for kids who love sand play!

I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the shade. The previous location was so minimally sheltered that hats and sunblock are a must. But as you can see from the photos, the new area is so much cooler - and it helps that there are plenty of large fans too, with more than enough chairs for parents to sit and wait.

Definitely a much more picturesque - and hence, Instagram-worthy - location too!

If you are planning to head down, here are a few things to take note of:

- Although the area is well-sheltered, there may be mosquitoes. Ale got 2 bites while we were there. Diggersite is not allowed to do fogging at the site because Ground-up Initiative grows crops organically just beside it. So do bring along insect repellent.

- Usage of safety helmet and vest is complimentary.

- The recommended age is from 2 years and above. Children under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

- No upper age limit as even adults are welcome.

- Opening hours are from 11am to 9pm on weekdays and 9am to 9pm on weekends.

- Due to the machinery involved, avoid wearing flip-flops or sandals as they do not protect the feet.

- If you prefer an air-conditioned environment, Diggersite also had two other locations are JCube (#03-17) and Suntec City (#02-734; Next to Mcdonald's).

AND in case you have not taken part, I am currently giving away SIX Diggersite membership cards! Each card is good for 10 rides and can be used at its Yishun, JCube & Suntec outlets. Giveaway ends on 19 Sep 2017 so participate HERE.
